Access the backcountry with this fundamental splitboard & ski touring course

Discover the keys to a whole new world of backcountry access. Get ready to revel in the freedom of touring uphill and riding untracked lines. This course is designed for intermediate resort skiers and snowboarders who are new to touring and want to be introduced to the basics of backcountry travel.

Over the course of two days, you’ll get hands-on experience with uphill travel techniques, transitions, and terrain management. Our expert instructors will help take the guesswork out of getting started so you can build confidence. You will learn how your backcountry gear works, how to use climbing skins, how to navigate terrain with a group, and how to transition smoothly between touring and riding.

Course Prerequisites:

· Intermediate resort alpine skiing and/or riding skills; you can confidently and easily ski/ride a blue run inbounds.

· Good physical fitness; you can hike uphill in deep snow for one or two hours with short breaks.

· No avalanche experience necessary. Participants will bring (or rent from ULLR Backcountry) their gear (beacon, shovel, probe) and will become familiar with its use during the course.

Itinerary
Itinerary
Please note the itinerary is subject to change as needed.
  • 1
    Day number 1
    Day 1:
Orientation, clothing and gear check. Discuss packing for a day of backcountry travel and what we expect conditions to be like in the coming days. Review the daily avalanche and weather forecast and discuss how this affects our travel plan. Drive to Deschutes National Forest/Willamette National Forest backcountry touring destination set up equipment for uphill travel and demonstrate a beacon function check.

Ascend and cover the nuances of moving uphill on skis or splitboards, such as how to pick an efficient line for uphill travel, breaking trail, using heel risers in steeper terrain, how to change directions with kick turns, and other essential techniques. During the tour, we will talk about efficient transitions from uphill to downhill travel, create a route for our descent, and learn group management strategies. After the tour, the group will meet and debrief the group leadership decision-making and plan for future tours.
  • 2
    Day number 2
    Day 2:
Meet at trailhead for a morning meeting and trailhead equipment check. Plan for the day’s tour by using a combination of paper maps and digital mapping resources in conjunction with avalanche and weather forecasts. Practicing our skills on the varied terrain of a longer tour, participants will work together to make both macro and micro-scale terrain choices and learn strategies for moving through backcountry terrain competently. All group decisions regarding terrain and travel are made with the oversight of the instructor to help facilitate the decision-making process. Instructors will model techniques for risk aware group management while skiing/riding in the backcountry. At tours end, we will drive back to town for a bite to eat and debrief the events and decisions made during the day. We will wrap up our course with a lively discussion in which we apply learned course material to future backcountry tours.
