Ullr Backcountry Guides

In 2022, Brad Martin recognized a growing need for informed and educated backcountry travelers in Central Oregon. Drawn to the popular cosmopolitan ski town of Bend, the number of backcountry winter recreationists was growing at an alarming pace despite limited avalanche education options. For every ten winter backcountry travelers, the region offered one avalanche safety course spot. Already teaching Recreation Level 1 and Avalanche Rescue courses at Oregon State University – Cascades, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), and Central Oregon Community College, Brad started ULLR Backcountry with his wife Kristen later that year, offering avalanche education courses to members of the backcountry community. Thanks to Kristen’s Norwegian American roots, the family-run business provides a traditional Norwegian breakfast buffet for courses that include indoor classroom sessions. In 2024, ULLR Backcountry expanded course offerings to include Recreation Level 1 and Avalanche Rescue Refresher courses, Introduction to Backcountry Touring, and Introduction to Winter Camping.
