Ski

Völkl Volkl V-Werks Katana Skis 2020

The Völkl V-Werks Katana Skis are in a class by themselves when it comes to big mountain powder skis that are still light enough to tour on. Their combination of full rocker and relatively large radius sidecut creates a ski with stability at speed that's still a joy to pivot quickly in tight chutes and trees. Don't be put off by the wafer thin sidewalls at the tip and tail; the V-Werks Katana is plenty stout underfoot and you really only notice the ultra thin profile when they're on your shoulder. When mounted up with a freeride tech binding like the Marker Kingpin these make the perfect setup for a week (or a season) sessioning pow lines from Japan to Garmisch.

Rocker Type

Full RockerVölkl Full Rocker is a smooth, gradual bend from tip to tail, with matching sidecut and a symmetrical flex pattern. All the benefits of extra maneuverability in soft snow while delivering smooth, sexy arcs of groomed terrain. The matching flex and sidecut on the full rocker gives you full, uninterrupted edge contact. The more the ski is on edge the more effective that edge becomes, and the resulting smoothness and predictability is uncanny.

Shape

3D.Ridge CarbonCentral woodcore ridge with super-slim wings to significantly reduce weight and swing weight and keep the stability where necessary. Combined with Full Carbon Jacket for stability.

Moderate TaperModerate setup of tapered tips for an all mountain oriented combination of precision on piste and easy handling off piste.

Core

Multi Layer WoodcoreThe combination of beech and poplar results in an extremely durable wood core composed of hard wood in the binding area and lighter wood surrounding it.

Laminates

ICE.OFF TopsheetThe unique surface structure and material composition reduces icing as the snow simply slides off the topsheet. This leads to a drastic reduction of weight in use, on average up to 20% to 30%. In addition, mainly white graphics support the anti-icing effect. Lighter skis prevent fatigue, especially on long and steep uphill sections.

Full Carbon JacketMaterial layup for direct transmission and high reliability/stability at the lightest possible weight.

Sidewalls

Center SidewallDirect and strong power transmission with partial sidewalls in the center of the ski, combined with the super-slim 3D.Ridge construction.

Base

P-Tex 4500 BaseA sintered, ultra-high molecular polyethylene base with an extremely high density. Besides a great wear resistance and perfect wax absorption, this base material is extremely fast and exclusively used on Volkl's top of the line and race models. The material has been upgraded with special additives to make it thermal and electro-conductive and proves its qualities with premium glide and maximum speed in races.

Additional Features

SkinPinA skin fastening system that is magnificent in its simplicity: perfect fixation and easy to use; full functionality without unnecessary bells and whistles. The skin is attached by inserting its pin through a shaped hole in the shovel of the ski. The skin is then rotated 90° to lock it in place. Once rotated the skin fixation is 100% reliably secured. The system can be monitored by the skier from above at any time to provide visual peace of mind. The hole in the tip of the ski is also helpful for building a rescue toboggan in an emergency.

Binding Compatibility

We recommend a brake width equal to or at most 15 mm wider than the ski waist width.

Marker Kingpin 10 Alpine Touring Ski Bindings 2020

When it comes to tech bindings you can use for daily skiing, the Marker Kingpin 10 Alpine Touring Ski Bindings still rule the roost. Light enough for adventurous touring but tough enough to slap on your daily drivers, the Kingpin 10 simply gets the job done with a weight of only 758 grams per foot. In addition, the power transmission with the spring-loaded Kingpin heel unit is a an improvement you'll feel over the traditional twin-pin tech heel connection. A favorite of hard charging backcountry types and working snow professionals. *Please Note: These bindings have updated toe pieces from Marker and are not affected by the August, 2018 recall.*

Toe

Kingpin ToeThe PinTech design on the KingPin toe piece promotes an ergonomic rolling up the foot and the most direct possible connection to the ski. Six steel springs capture the energy optimally, up to a DIN setting of 13. Individually adjustable positioning blocks make it quick and easy to step in no matter what the conditions.

Updated ToeThese bindings have updated toe pieces from Marker and are not affected by the August, 2018 recall.

Heel

Kingpin HeelThe revolutionary heel construction for the PinTech bindings features wide sole contact points to deliver the kind of direct, lossless power transfer more frequently seen in alpine bindings.

Tour Mode

Kingpin Climbing Aid | 0° / 7° / 13°Good climbing aids have one thing in common: Whatever the situation, they can be operated by feel, even when the skier can't see them clearly. Simplicity is a virtue here, and reduced exertion is even better. The KINGPIN wins hearts and minds through two integrated climbing aids (7° and 13°) that are easily deployed or stowed using the basket of the pole. They can also be operated conveniently using the tip of the pole, allowing them to work with any basket style. Because the climbing aids are positioned in the upper center of the heel piece, they are always easy to reach.

Walk / Ski ModesThe refined locking/unlocking procedure for the heel piece is part of the binding's charm. It takes just one step to switch from walk to ski mode: Simply flip a lever, push down on the heel and you're good to go. The mechanism works even in critical situations and challenging descents.
