K2 Backup Skis 2011: The K2 BackUp Skis are the ideal spring ski mountaineering tool, that’s equally happy as a resort telemark ski. Two sheets of metal with an ultra lightweight wood core provide exceptional edge-hold, and a damp, supple feel not found in skis this light. Its 82mm waist is narrow enough to excel whether descending frozen corn or skinning in hard, bony conditions, but wide enough to handle variable snow with ease and predictability.
The K2 BackUp Skis have a progressive sidecut, which is a combination of two different radii or sidecuts that enhance the versatility of wider waisted skis. Standard sidecut theory is based on using a single radius. This works great on narrower skis, but becomes overpowering on wider skis, especially in variable conditions. The use of a progressive sidecut on wider waist skis guarantees improved turn initiation and hard snow performance
The traditional camber gives the ski edge-hold, control and rebound. The K2 BackUp Skis make contact with the snow at the traditional contact points regardless if the ski is unweighted, weighted or engaged in a turn
Flat/notched tail.
Torsion Box Cap construction means they are built by a sophisticated molding process that envelopes the core and internal materials with the top layer of the ski. Snowphobic top sheets keep you light with a new snow repellent topsheet. The running surface along the bottom of a ski is hydrophobic by design so K2’s developed a thinner version of the same material to use on the back model specific topsheets.
Use: Variable snow: 60%, Soft snow: 40%
The core is a combination of Aspen, Paulownia, and Bamboo. Aspen is known for its inherent strength and durability, while Paulownia and Bamboo are both eco friendly and lightweight.
