Area Information
Andermatt, Switzerland

Andermatt is a historic Swiss mountain town whose roots go back to the days as a major trading hub between Italy and parts of Europe. With over 5,000 feet of vertical from the top and more backcountry touring than one could do in a lifetime, this is a mecca for skiing & snowboarding. Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, it sits in a perfect location for storms and is typically colder than other resorts. The snow quality and quantity is bound to be some of the best you’ve ever experienced. This traditional Swiss village is the perfect jumping off point for exploring nearby resorts and backcountry zones, as a cable car offers access to Gemsstock Ski Area right from the center of town.

Trip Planning

Trip Planning

Being prepared with the proper gear and equipment will make sure you are ready to have the time of your life on your Switzerland ski or snowboard trip. We suggest you bring your own skis or splitboard and backcountry gear if you have it. A ski with roughly a 100mm to 110mm waist is the best option, or a snowboard made for freeriding and powder. If you want to bring a wider pair of skis please feel free or we can rent these if needed. We highly recommend bringing or renting a backcountry touring set up as this will allow the group to really explore a wide variety of areas, though it is not required. Having this as a daily set up allows us to find the best snow on the resort, quick laps in the sidecountry or going a little deeper into the backcountry. There are also options for ski touring days if the groups wants. If you have a new pair of touring bindings or a split board and are comfortable riding a wide variety of terrain on them, please feel free to bring them. Always bring extra layers, good gloves, two pairs of goggles if you have them, or extra lenses, winter clothes for after skiing and a down jacket. We will be in the mountains so bring clothes that will keep you warm in a wide variety of conditions.

  • How much do things cost in Italy? Can I use my credit card?
Credit cards are widely accepted, but Amex is not always accepted. You will need some cash – but just for casual expenses. Most things can be paid for by credit card. The currency is the Euro. Withdrawing cash from your checking account using your US cash/debit card is usually much cheaper than converting dollar bills at an exchange desk and you will get the BEST Exchange rate. Many credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee around 3-5%. This may be the time to get yourself fun new rewards travel credit card that comes with “No Foreign Transaction Fees.” Italy is affordable as long as the Euro is in our favor. Even if the Euro isn’t in our favor the costs are on the lower end than what we are used to in the US. It’s easy to have an expensive meal, but it’s also easy to eat for less. There isn’t a food mart in the town of Alagna so if you’re looking for snacks to bring with you for the day we recommend picking them up at the airport before we head into the Alps.
  • Do I need to tip our guides?
Gratuities for your guides are not included in your trip price. Le grand recommends tipping 7-10% of your trip price for the guide team. US Currency is preferred, however, local currency is also greatly appreciated. Unless you want to tip separately, guides will divide tips amongst themselves. Please tip your guides at your discretion, based on the overall trip experience provided by our team
  • What is the food like? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Every morning you will be treated with healthy Swiss breakfasts before we start our day. Le Grand will host 2 group dinners (Welcome & Farewell) at local restaurants. Swiss meals are known for their quality & local ingredients as each region we visit has its own unique flavor. The group will have lunches at various mountain huts, restaurants and cafe’s while you take in the 360′ Swiss Mountain views. We leave these open so each guest can explore and try new foods. Please let Le Grand know of any food allergies and they will do their best to accommodate.
Testimonials
The skiing was even better and the mountain of Andermatt offers some of the best lift served skiing I have ever done. Engelberg is similar with one run that is almost 7,000 vertical! The local guides are great as they know the areas well, lived in the valley for generations and knew the local spots to visit

Jeff and Crystal a fantastic and dynamic duo to lead an off piste adventure. For starters, they are both lovely, down to earth, friendly and genuine people. I enjoyed my time with them over beers, wine and dinner as much as I did our time riding deep powder off piste at Andermatt and Engelberg… and that’s rather impressive to say as a few days were truly epic…
