Itinerary
  • 1
    Day number 1
Arrive to Kilimanjaro International Airport where our partners at OneSeed will be awaiting your arrival. We’ll drive an hour to the town of Moshi to check into our lodge and catch up on jet lag. In the evening you’ll join the rest of the group for a welcome dinner at the lodge.
  • 2
    Day number 2
The adventure begins! Drive an hour to the Marangu Gate to get your trekking permits for Kilimanjaro National Park. Depart for today’s 5 mile hike with only a daypack and begin your ascent through the mossy rainforest. Stop for a picnic to enjoy your box lunch before continuing the ascent. Spend the first night on the trail at Mandara Hut, a solar generated, A-frame hut at 8,900 ft. Enjoy a delicious dinner before getting some well-deserved rest.
  • 3
    Day number 3
Transition from the rainforest into the grasslands and catch your first glimpses of the Kibo Crater. Trek 7 miles today, past the unique plant life that can live for 100 years and reach up to 16 feet tall. Pass an ancient burial ground and learn about local Chagga culture. Retire to Horombo Hut at 12,150 ft for the evening after a warm meal and great sunset views.
  • 4
    Day number 4
Spend a day at Horombo Hut to acclimate to the altitude. Take a short 1,000 foot trek up to Zebra Rock, a geologic phenomenon located near the hut. Don't forget to look up at the star-covered sky with a clear view of the Milky Way. With almost no light pollution and its proximity to the equator, the Kilimanjaro area is an astronomer's paradise.
  • 5
    Day number 5
The hike continues through another microclimate - the alpine desert. This moon-like landscape gives you great views of the summit as you near 15,000 feet of elevation. Eat lunch on the trail and reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon for some dinner and rest before heading out that same evening for your final ascent.
  • 6
    Day number 6
Prepare for a spectacular (and long) day with about 13 miles of hiking on our summit attempt! Rise just before midnight to begin the long ascent to the summit where steep switchbacks lead you to the top. Be prepared for a very cold summit with plenty of layers and enough battery to snap that summit shot. Reach Gilman's Point (18,652 ft) at sunrise and take in the golden light before making the final push to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro's summit at 19,341 ft! From the summit, head back the way you came and return to Kibo Hut for a quick snack before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.
  • 7
    Day number 7
In the morning, soak in one last view from Horombo Hut and enjoy songs with the staff members of your group. Now is a good time to tip the porters, cooks, and guides. Continue your descent past Mandara Hut and continue all the way back to the park gates. Return to Moshi for a hot shower and a celebration dinner with your team.
  • 8
    Day number 8
Enjoy one last Tanzanian coffee and say goodbye to Moshi town. OneSeed will provide airport transportation for all international departures.

Area Information
Mount Kilimanjaro

Located in the northeast of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point on the African continent. Standing at 19,341 ft the world’s highest freestanding peak, meaning it is not surrounded by other tall mountains, is a popular trekking and climbing destination. Kilimanjaro is known as the “easiest” of the Seven Summits as reaching its high altitude summit does not require mountaineering gear or technical climbing skills. Although mountaineering experience is not necessary to summit, reaching the highest point in Africa is no small feat! Most Kilimanjaro treks take between 5 and 10 days as climbers have to slowly acclimate to get used to the high elevation.

Notes: It's important to note that trekking at high altitudes can become a concern above 10,000 ft. Some travelers choose to use prescriptions such as Diamox to treat altitude sickness. We recommend talking to your doctor about the use of any prescription medicine. Please also note that summiting is not guaranteed. While the majority of OneSeed travelers summit, not everyone can due to physical fitness, illness, or weather.

Trip Planning

Trip Planning

Due to its elevation, Kilimanjaro contains 5 sub-climates from base to peak -- bushland, rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic. Both precipitation and temperature vary greatly between each zone. Expect to hike from flat, dry plains through rainforest and semi-alpine environments before reaching the rocky, snow capped summit.

This expedition includes porters for bag transport. You are only responsible for carrying a daypack. We recommend packing your items in a large backpack or a durable duffle bag. The 22 lb weight limit for porter transport should include your sleeping bag.

Because Kilimanjaro is located near the equator, the temperature remains fairly constant throughout the year. Highs at the base of the mountains are in the upper 70s and lows in the lower 60s. As you increase in altitude on the mountain, temperatures drop significantly and the evenings can drop well below freezing and into single digits higher up on the mountain. Because you can expect so many different temperatures and conditions on this trip, the key is layering!

The rainy season peaks in April. Late March and early May can be quite wet as well. Bringing warm clothes and good rain gear will keep you prepared for any weather you may encounter.

FAQ
  • Is my departure guaranteed to run?
OneSeed Expeditions guarantees all trip departures. Please make sure you are registered with OneSeed before you book airfare.
  • What if I'd prefer to book a private trip?
Any OneSeed trip can be offered as a private trip. Please let us know if you're interested, and we'll be able to confirm pricing.
  • What are the accommodations like?
Before and after the trek you will be staying in hotel double occupancy (please see more info below) hotel lodging in Moshi. On the trek you will be sleeping in mountain huts which are basic mountain lodges with shared dorm-style bunk beds and bathroom facilities. Huts are simple but comfortable spots to rest your head after a long day of trekking.
  • Who will be my roommate? Are single rooms available?
If you are a solo traveler, OneSeed will try to pair you up with another solo traveler of the same gender, but if this is not possible, you'll need to pay a $250 single supplement to OneSeed Expeditions for your own room in Moshi. If you would like to purchase a single room for $250 for your two nights in Moshi please let OneSeed know.
  • What fitness and skill level is required for this trip?
Level 5 out of 5: These expeditions require excellent physical fitness. Treks include longer days, greater elevation gain, and more challenging terrain at higher altitude. Participants should expect high levels of physical exertion at times. Travelers joining these expeditions should be in good physical shape and should expect to hike all day. The hike does not require any mountaineering or technical climbing experience.
  • How should I train for my trek?
Taking training hikes that mimic the mileage and amount of time you will be trekking in Tanzania is highly recommended. Daily mileage can range from 5-13 miles and 5-16 trekking hours per day. This expedition requires excellent physical fitness. Treks include longer days, greater elevation gain, and more challenging terrain at higher altitude. Participants should expect high levels of physical exertion at times. We always recommend that travelers break in their hiking boots before the expedition.
  • What is the elevation? Is altitude a concern?
The highest elevation you will reach on your trek is 19,341ft. Trekking at high altitudes can become a concern above 10,000 ft. Some travelers choose to use prescriptions such as Diamox to treat altitude sickness. We recommend talking to your doctor about the use of any prescription medicine. We always advise hiking at your own pace, drinking plenty of water, and the importance of self-care on the trail.
  • I see that 10% of my trip cost is invested locally, what does that mean?
At OneSeed they believe that adventure and entrepreneurial hustle go hand in hand. Whether you’re trekking Kilimanjaro or taking the next step towards financial independence, it’s an endeavor that takes dedication and risk. That’s why when you travel with OneSeed, 10% of your trip cost is invested in local entrepreneurs - empowering our fellow risk-takers to launch or expand their business. OneSeed partners with local microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the countries where they operate. They invest 10 percent of our total revenue in these partners, who in turn lend this seed capital to small-scale entrepreneurs as collateral-free, shared liability microcredit. Entrepreneurs repay the loan over the course of the loan term as they launch or expand their business.
  • What safety precautions are in place during the trek?
Skilled mountain guides are the gateway to any successful adventure. In Tanzania, Back Country Pulse trained, tested, and certified OneSeed’s Kilimanjaro mountain guides with Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications. WFR certification is the standard for outdoor guides leading groups in remote environments with evolving weather, limited resources, and delayed evacuation times. OneSeed guides learned to perform an organized and detailed patient assessment for patients with medical and trauma problems. They learned how to write and talk about their findings, treatment, and plan in a collected, organized manner.
  • Should I purchase travel insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing additional trip cancellation insurance after booking your flights (we recommend World Nomads). Trip insurance may cover the following: trip cancellation due to an injury before your expedition, trip cancellation due to illness, reimbursement if your flight is canceled or delayed due to weather, lost baggage or theft, 24-hour customer support.

We are doing our best to offer increased flexibility during this time, and will refer to OneSeed Expeditions’ change and cancellation policy. Expeditions that include flights and other non-refundable elements are subject to the fees imposed by the partner airline in addition to any other nonrefundable costs not to exceed $300. Trip credit is valid for 12 months from the date of change and may be applied to any future posted expedition dates for the originally purchased expedition. You do not have to travel within those 12 months, only pick a date, subject to availability. As for cancellations, if you cancel 45 days or more prior to your scheduled departure, you will be reimbursed the full amount less $1,000.00 per traveler. If you cancel 30 - 44 days prior to your scheduled departure, you will be reimbursed the full amount less the non-refundable deposit of $1,000 per traveler or 50% of the total value of your expedition, whichever is greater. Within 30 days of your scheduled expedition, your adventure is nonrefundable.
  • When and how do I meet up with the group?

  • What will the food be like? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
First, please avoid street food when you first arrive in Tanzania! You do not want to begin your trek with unnecessary stomach issues. Food on the trail is rich in carbohydrates and protein since you'll be burning calories like a champ. Breakfast may include crepes/pancakes, toast, eggs, sausage/bacon, fruit, tea, hot cocoa, and coffee. Lunch may include fried chicken, puff pastry with either spinach or meat/carrots/peas, candy/biscuit, a banana, and hard-boiled eggs. Dinner may include soup, pasta or rice, chicken, beef or fish, avocado/green pepper salad, and fruit. OneSeed is able to accommodate most allergies and dietary preferences, please let them know if you need dietary accommodations upon booking.
  • What is the maximum number of guests per trip?
OneSeed Expeditions operates trips from 1 person to a max of around 10 people.
  • Is there a minimum age required for this trip?
The minimum age is 16 years old with a parent or guardian, you must be 18 years or older to participate on your own.
  • How much extra money should I budget?
All food and drink will be carried by your guide and there is nowhere to purchase food on the mountain so budgeting for this trek is fairly easy. That being said though, be sure to bring cash around $20-30 a day, for guide gratuities.
Testimonials
I thought the experience as a whole was life-changing. The guides were so comfortable and knowledgeable that they made me feel safe. I also like the way that OneSeed contributes to the community and shares in the experience of being local to the destination. The staff before and during the expedition was more than courteous and helpful in every way.

The summit guides really did an incredible job keeping us safe on the final summit push and the way back. Although the conditions on the summit were severe, making it to the top was incredible. We also had an amazing group that made the trip so much fun. This was my second trip with OneSeed.
