The 10 Best Ski Jackets of 2022-2023

By: Kevin Katsafanas: Men's Techwear Buyer | November 14, 2022

When you’re just going to wear one jacket all season long for one of your favorite activities, you’d better make sure it’s a good one. Plus, when that activity is as demanding on your outerwear as skiing, choosing the right ski jacket is even more important. With that in mind, we’ve taken extra care to put together this list of the season's best. But the best ski jacket for one person isn't always the same as the best ski jacket for another, so we've made sure to have a recommendation ready for every style of rider. No matter what you like to wear while skiing, from a backcountry ready 3-layer ski shell, to a stylish resort-ready jacket with a bit of insulation, we’ve got you covered.

New This Year:

A big trend for this year amongst many of our favorite brands is an emphasis on versatility. While the lightweight shell jacket has always been the go-to choice amongst backcountry skiers who need to be able to pack it away while they climb, that same type of jacket has also been proven to work wonders in the resort. When you can adjust your layers under your shell to fit the day, you can make sure you’re always prepared, and so we’ve been stoked to see a ton of new jacket shells that are designed to shine both in and out of bounds

Trew Gear Popover

Trew Gear Popover

Born from a collaboration between iconic Northwest brands, the Trew Gear Popover Jacket merges the technical prowess of the Portland-based outerwear manufacturer with the stylistic flair of a certain Seattle-based retailer. TREW and evo manifest in the Trew Gear Popover Jacket. This simple, clean and retro-styled classic offers bomber 20K weather protection and excellent 15K breathability with rugged, abrasion-resistant fabric designed to go the distance — even in the PNW. This jacket rocks. And we’re not just saying that because we had a hand in the design. The Trew Popover was designed to make awesome gear more accessible and to celebrate the heritage of snowsports in the PNW, and we think it does just that. With great looks, time-tested Trew quality, and a price point way below what you’d expect for a shell of this caliber, it’s an easy rec to any rider.

Helly Hansen SOGN 2.0

Helly Hansen SOGN 2.0

Simple, elegant, bomber. You don't need a jacket that has renaissance murals printed across it. You don't need robotic gizmos sewn into the seams. You need a lightweight 3-layer shell that dumps excess heat and keeps out the snow and wind. You need a hood that works and a fit that allows you to forget about the jacket and focus on what really matters: the riding. You need the Helly Hansen SOGN Shell 2.0 Jacket, just a darn good shell that's durable, waterproof, breathable, and built to stand up to the full range of conditions you encounter from the chairlifts to the skin track. The 3-layer shell is the peak of versatility in a ski jacket. It’s layerable for cold weather, packable for backcountry skiing, and super weatherproof when stuff gets nasty. Helly Hansen is known for making high-quality gear that puts efficiency and performance at the forefront, so it’s no surprise that their signature 3-layer shell is a winner.

Kevin Katsafanas

Growing up in the northwest I took to snowboarding when I was 13 and spent most weekends up at Snoqualmie riding the park. As I grew as a rider I traded out rails and jumps for more freeride terrain found on the other side of I-90 over at Alpental. With evo in my backyard, I spent countless weekends hounding the shop staff about gear. Finally, when I was 19 years old I found my way into a full-time position selling snowboards at the Seattle store. In the decade since I've worn a number of hats in the outdoor industry in addition to talking gear, including spending time as the Seattle store's marketing and events coordinator. 9 years later and I am still here at evo in my role as the Buyer for men's techwear, and ski/snowboard bags.
