The 7 Best Skateboards for Beginners of 2022

By: Steve Settles: Skate Buyer | May 26, 2022

While it may be intimidating to pick up a new passion, we think picking out a first skateboard as a rookie skater should be painless. That’s why we’ve assembled a comprehensive list of the best skateboards for beginners: our favorite downscaled completes from Element, Enjoi, Globe, and more that are manufactured with children in mind to be a comfortable fit while not sacrificing actual functionality. Our list features completes designed for beginning skaters ranging from early childhood to adolescence.

New This Year:

New this year are updates to a handful of skateboard completes, with switched-out components and additional new technologies in construction for more versatility, strength, and performance throughout. If you are a parent viewing this list for your child, be sure to keep sizing in mind, specifically the length of each board as it compares to the height of its potential rider. Additionally, be thoughtful of any prior skating experience and skill level when perusing through our list.

Element Section 7.75

Carve out a section in your chosen element -- be it street, vert, or a little of both -- with the classic and fully equipped Element Section 7.75 Skateboard Complete. Utilizing Element’s Featherlite deck construction, which features eight thinner wood plies to add strength and eliminate weight, the Section 7.75” Complete is an excellent beginner board from an iconic brand. With its Twin Popsicle shape that features a “tail” at both ends, this board can be skated seamlessly facing either direction. The board is built out with Element’s standard graphic wheels, trucks, and bearings, all of which are considered among the skateboard industry’s pinnacle quality. At 7.75” wide, 31” long, and 14” in wheelbase from truck to truck, this setup is a tad larger than a “mini” but still well-suited to younger riders who are still growing. It is an excellent “first board” for novice skaters who want industry-leading performance under their feet at the skatepark or in the streets.

Habitat Pod Navy 7.75

Another exemplary grade beginner board from a skate industry juggernaut, the Pod Navy Complete from Habitat is a medium-sized setup with full-sized potential. The deck consists of seven plies of high-quality Canadian Maple, and attached below are Habitat’s standard logo trucks, 53mm 99a wheels, and ABEC-7 bearings. This complete skates the same as one belonging to a member of Habitat’s professional team, but its slightly stunted specs at 7.75” by 31.625” make it suitable for younger riders to hone their skills as they grow.

Enjoi Panda Soft Top 6.75 - Little Kids'

Your youngin' is looking to get comfortable on a skateboard? There's no better way than with the Enjoi Panda Soft Top 6.75 Skateboard Complete. Its soft EVA top layer provides extra cushion beneath their feet and helps them gain confidence right from the get-go! Perfect for riders 5 years old or younger!

One of the only true “mini” boards on our list, the Panda Soft Top 6.75” complete is built for the youngest and smallest of skateboard enthusiasts. Steve Settles

I knew Santa Claus was real when a shiny new complete skateboard was waiting for me under the tree in the winter of ’92. Skateboarding has been in my life ever since. Somehow I have been lucky enough to work in the skateboard community since legally possible. Started behind the counter selling skateboards, moved up to store manager of a retail location, recruited to work in Event Marketing running the largest amateur skateboard contest in the US, then landed the job at evo with opening and managing Seattle’s only indoor skatepark – All Together Skatepark.

After the first 5 years of running All Together Skatepark, I slowly started taking on buying responsibilities for evo skate products and have most recently moved to buying full time. Skateboarding has taught me to look at the world differently and openly by breaking down all barriers of age, race, gender, and culture. Skateboarding is for all humans. For that perspective, I am forever grateful!
