The 7 Best Beginner Wakeboards for 2021

New to the sport and a bit overwhelmed with all the options out there? Just looking for something less expensive to dip your toes into the world of wake? Maybe you’re a bit more boardsport savvy and want a ride that will get you from your first time standing up to your first few inverts as quickly as possible. Whatever category you fall into, we’re really glad you’re here! Wakeboarding is an unbelievably fun and exciting sport and we’re ecstatic to share some of our favorite beginner-friendly decks to help you find a board that meets your needs behind the boat.

The good news in the world of wakeboards is that the term "beginner wakeboard" doesn’t necessarily mean that the board is only for beginners, or that it’s just a cheap knockoff of their more performance-oriented counterparts. Many of the beginner-friendly options from brands these days have countless hours of specific R&D and tech built into their shapes to maximize progression for new riders. Boards in this category also get tons of trickle-down-tech from higher-end models, which helps you establish a solid foundation for learning the fundamentals, but also allows you to use that same board to grow into the intermediate-advanced stages of riding without the need to upgrade. There has never been a better time to get into the sport of wakeboarding, and we don’t think there has ever been a better lineup of beginner-friendly gear either. With that said, here are our picks for the best beginner wakeboards of 2021!

Hyperlite State 2.0

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

One of our favorite boards for true beginners is the Hyperlite State 2.0. Hyperlite has spent an unthinkable amount of hours working to craft a board that takes the toughest parts of learning how to wakeboard and completely removes them from the equation. One of the hardest things for new riders is mastering control while on their toe-side edge. The State 2.0 uses a unique asymmetrical design that uses a shorter toe-side edge with thin molded fins. This gives the board a bit of extra bite and hold on that side, but doesn’t take away from the stability you get from the longer heel-side rail. This greatly reduces the learning curve and increases the fun factor!

Durable molded-in fins and 1.3” center fins keep the board pointed where you want it to go and inspires plenty of confidence. The abrupt continuous rocker keeps the drag low and speed high to keep you focused on progression and less on how sore your arms are from being pulled around the lake – which is always a good thing!

Liquid Force Trip

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

The Liquid Force Trip has been a staple in their line for more years than we can even count. For real though – it’s pretty trippy how long it’s been (pun intended!). It goes back to the old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” The Trip is a true workhorse in the Liquid Force lineup and they’ve made some subtle changes that make it even better. This board uses their D-I-S-C hull with edge channels that help soften the blow of heavier landings and offers faster board speed on the water. Longer molded fins keep the board under control and provide additional stability when progression is your highest priority. Another feature we really like is the widened tip and tail. Wakes are getting bigger and bigger these days, and the wider design helps keep the pop smooth and consistent.

The removable center fin gives you the option to change the overall ride of the Trip. Keep them in for a more locked-in feel, or remove them for a looser surf-style ride. Regardless of where you’re at with your riding, the Trip offers something for everyone. With how successful this board has been, and for how long, it’s tough to argue!

Ronix Vault

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

Ronix went deep into the vault of wakeboard tech to develop a beginner-friendly board that promises to help you build a solid foundation in the sport. The Ronix Vault uses a cleverly designed asymmetrical shape that cuts down the learning curve and increases rider confidence. The board’s asymmetrical rails use a thinner sharper toeside rail with a longer fuller heelside rail to help newer riders master carving and gain more control on their toeside edge. The Vault uses two molded-in fins to help with tracking and stability, while a low friction base keeps the drag (and fatigue!) to a minimum.

Just starting out, but have those big wake to wake jumps on your mind? Fear not, because the Vault comes equipped with a super poppy 3-stage rocker that provides a ton of kick off the wake – but only when you’re ready for all that. We think Ronix did a fantastic job designing the Vault, and it’ll serve its owner well whether it’s their first time riding, or their first time throwing a backroll into the flats.

The Connelly Lotus is one of our favorite shapes for female riders just starting out or ready to take their riding to the next level. Ronix Krush SF Wakeboard - Women's

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

Wakeboarding can be a strange feeling thing when you’re first starting out. It is one of the only boardsports where your shoulders and hips aren’t always aligned. This is especially true when you’re carving away from the boat on your toeside edge. Your body has a tendency to get crossed up which can feel quite awkward. Ronix took this into account when developing the Ronix Krush. Taking asymmetrical features from the Ronix Vault, this shape uses a thinner sharper edge on the toeside of the board for maximum confidence-building grip while the fuller vertical heelside rail offers additional stability when digging in on your heels. The Krush includes a molded-in twin-fin design with the ability to keep the removable 1.7” hook center fin for extra traction.

A 3-stage rocker allows the rider to progress at their own pace without worrying about the board lacking pop when they’re ready for it down the road. Last but not least, the board has a killer graphic – which is always worth a few extra points in our book.

Hyperlite Venice Wakeboard - Women's

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

The Hyperlite Venice is a one-board-wonder for any skill level. Built around the premise that a solid foundation increases fun, progression, and confidence, the Venice is designed with unique features that offer more and more performance as the rider grows into the sport. At the forefront of these features is the variable edge design. This edge shape offers a mellow and forgiving ride between the feet but sharpens towards the tip and tail to help dig into an edge and generate heaps of speed into the wake. The board uses a wider overall profile and continuous rocker to deliver a smooth carving ride, huge pop, and ultra-soft landings. We are also big fans of the “less is more” base design. The center of the base is smooth which increases water flow and reduces drag.

Hyperlite also uses a women’s specific Satin Flex which is slightly softer than other boards in the line but still offers plenty of responsiveness and solid, consistent pop. We highly recommend this good beginner wakeboard for any ladies out there that want to buy a single board that’ll take them from their first ride to their first podium – it really can do it all!

Liquid Force Classic

The best beginner wakeboards 2021

Naming and subsequently self-proclaiming a board the ‘Classic’ is a pretty bold move. However, we think Liquid Force’s decision is justified. This board really does deliver it all. Don’t let the fact that it’s Shawn Watson’s pro model scare you away! Shawn has been riding for a very long time and knows exactly what design features will make everyone happy on the water. The Classic uses a lifted variable edge and quad vented channels at the tips to give you unmatched response and control in the category but never feels too aggressive or overwhelming. The mellow 3-stage rocker offers massive pop, but landings are soft and smooth thanks to the water displacing base features. A removable center fin gives the rider even more control over the ride characteristics and feel.

We think this is truly a board that can benefit a beginner or seasoned pro alike. It has all the performance anyone could need while still offering plenty of forgiveness for us mere mortals. A strong front-runner for newer wakeboarders coming into the sport from other boardsport backgrounds. Pro model performance for a fraction of the cost – who could complain?
