The 7 Best Ski & Snowboard Mittens of 2020-2021

Some people just can’t get past using gloves while skiing or snowboarding, most talk to you about needing the added “dexterity.” But, realistically, for a glove to be warm it’s not going to be significantly more dexterous than mittens - both are coming off to dig out your Chapstick or ‘gram about getting first chair on a pow day. But, if you can get into the idea that your hand gestures will be more Squidward and less SpongeBob, there’s some serious comfort and warmth benefits to rocking the mitts.

Like bibs, ski & snowboard mittens tend to have a fervent following amongst those in the know, mostly because of the superior warmth they provide. The logic is pretty simple and has been proven scientifically - gloves have more surface area exposed to the cold, and more surface area means more heat loss. Additionally, gloves have more seams, which is another place where heat tends to escape. The only real downside to wearing mittens vs. gloves is you might not be able to visually convey your anger with single-digit gestures as well, or be able to communicate without speaking you want exactly three tacos, but you’re a clever person. You’ll figure those things out.

If you’re ready to dig your digits into the plush, warm world of mittens, the good news is there are options abound. Also, if you’re not quite ready to go full mitten, some three-finger, lobster claw-esque options are out there. These mitten/glove hybrids still provide additional warmth, but keep your pointer finger free for you to more accurately point at the line you’re about the shred. You really can’t go wrong with any mitt on this list. These are the best ski and snowboard mittens of 2021.

Black Diamond Spark Mittens

Best 2020-2021 ski & snowboard mittens

Black Diamond says their Spark Mittens—with 60g of Primaloft® Gold Insulation—work best in the 10 to 30 degree F temperature range, making them a great option for winter days on the warmer end of the spectrum. If you happen to be riding in a wet storm, or spending a lot of time with your hands in the snow, Black Diamond’s proprietary 100% waterproof insert will be the hero that saves the day. A plush interior with individual finger slots lends a bit more of a glove-type feel, which might be nice for new converts to the mitten world. The Black Diamond Spark comes in a Women’s and Men’s version, a “lobster claw” version in Women’s and Men’s, an Angel Collinson Pro Model, and a Johnny Collinson Pro Model. Phew!

Burton Gondy GORE-TEX Leather Mittens

Best 2020-2021 skis & snowboard Mittens

Like miniature gondola cars, Burton’s Gondy GORE-TEX Leather Mittens will keep your hands super warm while winter rages outside (and you rage downhill). They might have a classic leather look about them, but they are packed with all sorts of cutting-edge tech. Most notable is the GORE-TEX + GORE WARM system, which marries the lining, membrane, and outer material for better insulation performance. If you think your big ol’ mitten thumb is agile enough to operate your phone in fresh powder, the Gondy’s have special touchscreen-compatible leather in the thumb that will allow you to TikTok with abandon. Lastly, Burton Thermacore™ Insulation provides ample winter warmth without the bulk to ensure you don’t look like Adonis Creed in the park. The Burton Gondy comes in both a Women’s and Men’s version.

Oyuki Tamashii GORE-TEX Mitts

Best 2020-2021 ski & snowboard mittens

Hokkaido is Japan’s northern island, just a stone’s throw from the shores of Siberia, and it snows more here than you would ever believe. Since Oyuki is from Hokkaido, it follows they know a thing or two about keeping warm in raging winter storms with frigid temperatures. Their Tamashii glove was built specifically to be ultra-warm while keeping a low profile. With 133g of PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation at the back of the hand, and 80g in the palm, they’ve got the former more than covered. Japanese design aesthetic lends itself well to the latter and the addition of zips instead of a velcro at the cuff ensure you won’t have any trouble fitting these guys under your jacket. A top-of-the-line GORE-TEX waterproof/breathable insert rounds out this premium offering.

Hestra Fall Line 3-Finger Mittens

The best ski & snowboard mittens

Born in the small mountain village of Hestra, Sweden, Hestra has been making gloves for skiers since 1937. Their Army Leather Heli Ski Gloves have an almost cult following amongst heli guides for being dependable and durable with no BS. The Fall Line 3-Finger mitt is their modern marriage of glove and mitten, and comes complete with a luxurious leather construction and timeless good looks. The free trigger finger does add a bit of dexterity to your game, and overall these are super warm. There’s no waterproof insert in these guys, but read some of the reviews on our site: a little effort with some waterproofing wax goes a long way and makes for a relaxing pre-powder day ritual. If you need any more convincing that these are rad, consider that Seth Morrisson had a version of these as his pro model for many, many years. He was last seen in all black, with all black Hestra 3-Fingers, touring into the Colorado wilderness.

Dakine Baron GORE-TEX Trigger Mittens

The best ski & snowboard mittens 2021

Tried, tested, and perfected in the wet snow and wind-hammered conditions on Mt. Hood, Dakine’s Baron GORE-TEX Trigger Mittens were built to withstand some brutal winter elements. Again, this 3-finger design lends some welcome dexterity to mitten warmth, and a low-profile cuff is highly-compatible with jacket sleeve cuffs. Unique to this lineup, Dakine went with a wool-blend liner—along with the industry-standard PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation—on the Baron. If you’re not familiar with wool in mitts, it’s pretty rad. It dries really quick and is incredibly warm, even if you happen to manage to get these wet, which is going to be difficult with the GORE-TEX insert. Another unique feature is the use of Gore Grip technology, which basically welds the liner and outer together so it feels more like a single layer than two.
