The Santa Cruz Stigmata is what happens when a mountain bike brand builds a gravel bike and refuses to dumb it down. Featuring progressive geometry borrowed from Santa Cruz's trail lineup, clearance for big tires, and a CC carbon frame that keeps the weight honest, it's is equally at home on tarmac, gravel, and dirt. Fast enough to race, capable enough to wander — the Stigmata doesn't ask you to choose.

Stigmata's long reach and slack head tube angle adapt progressive MTB geo for off-road capabilities. Suspension corrected geo accomodates the longer axle-crown of 40mm gravel suspension forks, and the frame is dropper post compatible.
The Glovebox frame storage gives you extra room to stash the essentials, even with a full complement of frame bags.
Stigmata has space for tires upto 50mm, allowing you to hit the roads and trails less travelled.

The Stigmata 4 is for riders who want a gravel bike that feels just as at home charging singletrack as it does covering long miles of dirt roads.
It's built around 700c wheels with clearance for tires up to 50mm, and the whole frame borrows heavily from Santa Cruz's mountain bike playbook rather than a traditional road-derived approach. That shows up in a slack head tube angle, a long reach paired with a short stem, and a suspension-corrected fork that can run rigid or with 40mm of travel. If your rides mix smooth gravel, punchy fire roads, and the occasional trail that gets a little rowdy, the Stigmata 4 is built to handle all of it without feeling out of its depth. It's less of a road bike with knobby tires and more of a mountain bike that happens to have drop bars.
The Stigmata 4 is a much more confident, stable ride than the Stigmata 3, especially once things get rough or fast.
Santa Cruz slackened the head tube angle to 69.5 degrees, stretched the reach by around 30mm, and paired that with a shorter 70mm stem for calmer, more predictable steering. The bottom bracket also dropped slightly, which helps the bike feel more planted through corners and on descents. The Stigmata 3 was a more road-like, cyclocross-rooted machine with tighter geometry and a tire ceiling around 45mm. The Stigmata 4 opens that up to 50mm and adds a suspension-corrected fork, so the bike can handle terrain the previous generation would have shied away from.
Santa Cruz also added Glovebox in-frame storage, a Universal Derailleur Hanger for easier compatibility and repairs, and dropper post routing, none of which the Stigmata 3 offered. The result is a bike built for bigger days and rougher routes without giving up its speed on smoother gravel.
The biggest difference comes down to bar style and how each bike wants to be ridden, even though both are built for riders who love fast, technical terrain.
The Stigmata 4 is a drop-bar gravel bike with 700c wheels and up to 50mm of tire clearance, built for covering long distances on mixed surfaces with the option to point it down singletrack when the mood strikes. The Highball is a flat-bar XC hardtail with full 29" wheels and a lighter, race-oriented build, designed purely for dirt and singletrack rather than road and gravel connectors.
If most of your riding starts and ends on pavement or gravel roads with trail sections mixed in, the Stigmata 4 is the more versatile pick. If you're chasing pure trail speed and don't need drop bars or road capability, the Highball is the sharper tool for the job.
The Stigmata 4's frame and fork are built to work with or without suspension, which means one bike can flex between a fast gravel racer and a more capable trail companion.
Every Stigmata 4 frame is designed around the same geometry whether you're running the standard rigid carbon fork or upgrading to a 40mm-travel RockShox Rudy XPLR suspension fork. That's a meaningful shift from most gravel bikes, which are built around a rigid fork and only awkwardly accept suspension as an afterthought. With the Rudy fork fitted, the front end smooths out chatter and small hits significantly, making rough double-track and loose descents feel far more controlled.
For riders who mostly stick to smoother gravel, the rigid fork keeps things light and efficient. For anyone who regularly finds themselves on rutted trails or rowdy descents, the suspension option turns the Stigmata 4 into a noticeably more capable and confidence-inspiring bike without changing its fundamental handling character.
Every Stigmata 4 build shares the same CC carbon frame and geometry. The key differences as you move up the lineup are drivetrain type, wheel quality, and whether you get a suspension fork and dropper post.
The Apex build is the entry point, with a SRAM Apex XPLR mechanical drivetrain and aluminum wheels, a great choice if you want the platform without spending on wireless shifting. The Rival AXS build steps up to SRAM's wireless Rival XPLR drivetrain, which is where a lot of riders find the sweet spot between value and modern shifting performance.
The Force AXS Reserve build adds Santa Cruz's Reserve carbon wheels for a lighter, stiffer ride, and this is the build where the RockShox Rudy XPLR suspension fork and a dropper post come standard, turning the bike into a genuine trail-capable machine. The Red Force AXS Reserve build sits at the top, pairing a SRAM Red and Force hybrid drivetrain with the same Reserve wheels and suspension setup for the lightest, most refined version of the bike.
