Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Pants - Women's

The Lowdown

Similarly to my experience with the Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Jacket, I decided a while back to only wear bibs. Getting snow down my pants one too many times made me decide to never let it happen again, but then Patagonia introduced me to this amazing pair of lightly insulated pants, and I have to say I’m open to regular snow pants again.

The Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Pants aren't technically high waisted, but they fit higher on the waist and don’t slip down which is extremely important to literally everyone. They hug the waist comfortably but still have enough room to tuck in a base layer which is how I like to arrange everything for comfort. Before I made the switch to bibs, my pants would always snap open when I was bending down to adjust my boots or pick something up, and I made sure that wasn't the case with these. Everything stays put, but they are still flexible enough to get shwifty on the slopes.

Technical Details

It’s new for me to get insulated pants — since I naturally heat up a lot once I get moving — but the breathability rating on these pants coupled with the mesh-lined vents make these super versatile and not too hot. It’s actually such a nice change to not have the front of my thighs freezing cold on an overcast, windy day.

I don’t use pants pockets nearly as much as jacket pockets, but the ease of use with these ones is great. There’s a dropped pocket on the front side of one leg, and I really like to store my card and I.D. because it's relatively flat and not right at the hinge point near my waist when I bend down. Also, having belt loops is such a convenient option for people who really struggle with pants staying up. I didn't need to use them, but having the option is great. The webbing loop is also super convenient, and you can attach it to any Patagonia jacket with a powder skirt, so if you happen to have a Patagonia jacket you love already, it will pair nicely.

Ride Impressions

I’ve gotta call out the glorious mesh-lined vents on these pants. They are on the outer side of each leg which makes so much sense to me! All pants/bibs I’ve had in the past have inner thigh vents which can cause the zippers to get a little messed up when you’re walking around and the zipper hardware rubs together. I also really like the clean look of them, and the zipper details matching the color of the coat is such a nice touch that I appreciated.

I think the Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Pants are best for skiers just based on the boot clearance at the bottom. They were plenty wide for my ski boots, but could be a tighter fit around snowboard boots. I only used these inbounds at the resort, but with the vents they would definitely work for people touring on colder days. Although the insulation could be a tad too warm for sunny days on the skin track when you’re working up a sweat. I personally love to get as much use out of my gear as possible, and with the comfort and durability these have, they would also be great for shoveling snow or doing any work outdoors when you need that extra bit of protection from the elements!

The one qualm I have with the bib-style pants that I normally rock is going to the restroom…you have to take off all your gear and it’s such a pain, so having these fit higher on the hips while being able to attach to the powder skirt on the jacket using the webbing loop to keep snow out makes it the best of both worlds!

Finally, I think these are at a great price point for all the features they are equipped with as well as overall durability, but it’s also just nice to know that if anything breaks after a while Patagonia can repair it for the lifetime of the pants to ensure they last last as long as you love them, which in my opinion will be quite a while.

Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Cons

  • Seriously can't think of any!

Who's It For?

The Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Pants are ideal for skiers who prefer low-bulk insulation and a true to size fit. With 100% recycled Thermogreen® insulation, these are great for someone who gets cold on the slopes but needs venting for sunny, bluebird days! If you like to get good bang for your buck and get as many wears as possible per winter, these pants can take on just about any outdoor activity where trudging through powder covered driveways is no easy task.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is these pants are a breath of fresh air for someone who has been wearing bibs or dealing with pants that give you more trouble than they're worth. The Patagonia Insulated Powder Town Pants are super soft to the touch, but quite durable when it comes to holding up against winter elements. Equipped with a 2-layer H2No® Performance Standard face fabric and Thermogreen® insulation, the high quality and durable Powder Town Pants can make a dedicated bib wearer (like myself) ditch the overalls for something better. We also can't forget that they are made using postconsumer recycled materials, so while you're getting something that’ll last, nature is also able to take a breather. They’re comfortable, reliable, tough, and sleek enough for making big mountain moves all season long.
