The Bronson 5 is the latest incarnation of a trail riding legend. When it first landed over a decade ago, Bronson heralded a new dawn as Santa Cruz's first full 27.5" mountain bike. Fast forward to today and it's still making waves at the forefront of the MX revolution. With the Bronson 5, Santa Cruz has refined its approach to mixed wheel design, creating a bike that's more balanced, intuitive, and downright fun than any Bronson to date.

Millimeters matter: the lower VPP link is forward and low to optimize anti-squat, which relates to how much pedaling inputs stiffen the suspension. Too little and you have a bike that bobs under power. Too much and the bike will be harsh and not as able to absorb bumps. The Bronson 5 has reduced anti-squat for a more plush, open ride feel.
Taking learnings from more recent MX bikes, Santa Cruz has balanced the handling and pushed VPP to the max for a bold yet intuitive ride. Chainstays are longer and matched to frame size so every rider gets the same balanced geometry, no matter their height.
A minimal weight gain of approximately 250 - 280 grams (0.6 lbs) for the C frame over the CC due to the different grade of carbon used. Whether you're riding a carbon CC or C frame, you get exactly the same legendary strength and stiffness because Santa Cruz uses exactly the same manufacturing facility and techniques.

If you ride hard, aggressive trails but don't want to sacrifice on the climb, the Bronson 5 is a great option. It's right at home on Whistler Valley trails but handles dirt jumps and fast, flowy singletrack just as well. If you have the Bronson 4 and want more confidence and fewer limitations, the upgrade is worth it. And if you're on a heavy enduro bike and tired of slogging up climbs, the Bronson 5 gives you the same descending confidence in a much lighter package.

The Santa Cruz Bronson 5 is a much more gravity-focused compared to the Bronson 4. The V5 is longer and slacker and features in-frame GloveBox storage. It swaps the V4's snappy, playful nature for greater stability, plushness, and high-speed downhill control.
The biggest change is the revised VPP suspension layout with lower anti-squat values, creating a more supple pedaling platform that tracks better through rough terrain. Combined with longer chainstays, a slacker head tube angle, and a steeper seat tube angle, the Bronson 5 feels noticeably more balanced, particularly where the Bronson 4 could feel unsettled on fast, square-edge hits. The geometry adds up to a bike that's almost 20mm longer in wheelbase, putting the rider in a more centered position both climbing and descending.
The Hightower is the Bronson's full 29" sibling, offering better efficiency on longer, pedal-heavy rides and more predictable steering on technical climbs. The Bronson 5's mixed wheel setup trades some of that climbing composure for a more playful, agile feel on descents. Riders who prioritize tight, technical climbing may prefer the Hightower, while those focused on aggressive descending will lean toward the Bronson.
The Bronson 5 comes in five builds: C R, C S, C GX AXS, CC X0 AXS, and CC X0 AXS RSV. All builds share mixed wheels, 160mm/150mm travel, Reserve alloy rims, and Maxxis Assegai/DHR II tires. The meaningful upgrades between tiers come down to suspension, brakes, and drivetrain.
The jump from the R to the S is one of the biggest value steps, swapping the RockShox Lyrik Base and Fox Rhythm shock for a Fox 36 Performance fork and Float X Performance shock, along with better hubs. The S to GX AXS adds wireless SRAM AXS shifting, Elite-level suspension dampers with more adjustment, and SRAM Maven Bronze brakes, which are a significant upgrade over the DB8 Stealth brakes on the lower builds. For riders who care about braking performance on steep terrain, that Maven upgrade alone is worth considering.
The X0 AXS is where the CC frame enters, saving weight with higher-grade carbon, and pairs it with Fox Factory suspension, Industry Nine hubs, and upgraded Reserve 30 SL alloy rims. The top-tier X0 AXS RSV swaps to Reserve 30 HD carbon rims for the lightest, stiffest wheelset in the lineup.
For most riders, the GX AXS build hits the sweet spot with capable suspension, strong brakes, and wireless shifting on the more affordable C frame.
Both frames are full carbon, but the CC uses a higher-grade layup for a lighter, stiffer frame. The CC also drops internal cable routing for the rear derailleur, meaning it's designed exclusively for wireless electronic drivetrains like SRAM AXS. The C frame retains cable routing. Both frames carry Santa Cruz's lifetime warranty on the frame and pivot bearings.
