Itinerary
Itinerary
  • 1
    Day number 1
    Day 1: Anchorage

Welcome to the largest city of Alaska, most often thought of as the state's capital. Start off your vacation flying into stunning scenery overlooking the Chugach, Alaskan, Kenai, and Talkeetna mountain ranges. Although Mt. Denali is only visible 20% of the year, there's a chance you could even catch a glimpse. Anchorage is Alaska's most populated area yet it's shared with the likes of bears, moose, and wolves. After your flight into this urban wilderness, make your way to our accommodations for the 6 pm pre-departure meeting followed by a group meal. Take this evening to get to know your fellow travelers and guides.

    Included: Anchorage accommodation, Welcome Meeting
Optional activity before tour: Full-day world famous Brooks River Alaskan brown bear viewing, Katmai National Park.
  • 2
    Day number 2
    Days 2 - 4: Seward

Located on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula and Resurrection
Bay, Seward is known as the "Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park." Seward is about half day drive from Anchorage. In the afternoon you will have some free time to explore
the scenic waterfront of Seward. The following morning we will experience the national
park by boat, cruising among the glaciers and wildlife. After hopefully spotting as much wildlife as possible we will be seeing a calving glacier!

A visit to Seward would not be complete without hiking alongside the picturesque Exit Glacier with a probability of seeing a few of the local black bear feeding on some berries. The 8.2-mile round trip up to the Harding Icefield is a spectacular yet strenuous day hike. Starting on the valley floor, the trail winds through cottonwood and alder forests, passes though heather filled meadows and ultimately climbs well above tree line to a breath-taking view of the Harding Icefield. The top of the trail is a window to past ice ages - a horizon of ice and snow that stretches as far as the eye can see! If you don’t feel prepared to do the full 8.2-mile roundtrip, there are shorter options with equally breathtaking views available.

Included activities: Kenai National Park entrance, Kenai Fjords National Park wildlife cruise, calving glaciers, and hiking Exit Glacier
    Optional activities: kayaking, fishing
  • 3
    Day number 3
    Day 5: Homer

Located on the western side of the Kenai Peninsula and Kachemak Bay, Homer is the launching point for our two-night Adventure Camp. But, don't overlook this artist inspired town with its many galleries along the spit. You will have some time to explore the picturesque town and its fishermen culture. For example, the Salty Dawg Saloon's lighthouse is a great place to sit belly-up to the bar along with posting your dollar bill on the ceiling or wall so that your friend, who will be by later, will have a drink on you.

On the way to Homer there will be enough time for some scenic photo stops and short walks. Depending on the time of the year we might stop to watch the Salmon Running up Russian River or visit one of the Russian orthodox churches overlooking the volcanoes on the other side of the bay.

Included activities: Exploring the picturesque town of Homer and its fishermen culture
Optional activities: "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World", bear viewing Katmai or Lake Clark (following morning)
  • 4
    Day number 4
    Days 6 - 7: Adventure Camp

Take a boat ride from Homer to Kasitsna Bay, landing on this lovely and relatively untouched beach of the peninsula. You will be sleeping in cabins with beds and all the amenities you'll need. There even is a sauna awaiting you and your fellow travellers! From there venture out and comb the beaches for eagles and other aquatic wildlife or walk to find some hidden coves and viewpoints. The next day you'll have a half day of sea kayaking around Kasitsna Bay, frequently visited by sea otters and harbor seals and watched overhead by bald eagles. One of the evenings we will be serving a salmon dinner!

Included activities: water taxi from and to Homer (½ hour ride), 2-night stay at the Adventure Camp in cabins, half-day sea kayaking Kasitsna Bay
  • 5
    Day number 5
    Day 8: Hope

In the morning we will take the water taxi back to Homer to make our way along the coastline to Hope. Hope is a quaint little town overlooking Cook Inlet/Turnagain Arm and is just a short drive from Anchorage. In the summer during weekends there might be some live concerts going on in the local fishermen
    bar. (Bushcamp)

Included activity: open air museum, outdoor music
    Optional activity: historic museum
  • 6
    Day number 6
    Day 9: Anchorage

Today it’s only a short drive around the Turnagain Arm back to Anchorage. Potentially you can see beluga whales or dall sheep. We will stop at Potter Marsh to spot some of the migratory birds and wildlife that call it home. The afternoon you will have time to explore Anchorage downtown. Anchorage is a lively city that houses almost 50% of the state’s 730,000 people. (Commonly it is mistaken for the capital of Alaska, but that would be Juneau.) Throughout the summer there are multiple festivals, local markets and plenty of nightly live music. Keep in mind that this city is situated right in the heart of the wilderness, where over 1,000 moose, 250 black bears, and 100 grizzly bears also call it home.

    Included activities: Potter Marsh
Optional activity: Anchorage Museum, Heritage Center, bike Coastal Trail

Infinite Adventures can't, with 100% certainty tell you what will give you the optimal comfort in your overland adventure. But, we can give you a good idea as to what you should bring and then you can add on whatever you might feel is essential to your personal needs.

Weather conditions and climate can vary wildly during summer in Alaska. Temperatures can be vary from an average of 59 degrees F to 77 degrees F during days, and nights can get pretty chilly (into the 40s and 50s). Be prepared for rain or shine! Weather can change pretty quickly as well, so the best way to dress is in layers.

FAQ
FAQ
  • Is the trip guaranteed to run?
This trip has a minimum number of 6 guests to run, please do not book travel or flights until Infinite Adventures has confirmed your departure.
  • When and how should I meet up with the group?
You will meet the group on Day 1 at 6pm at Base Camp Hostel in Anchorage. You will find a welcome note at the reception that day to provide you with any further information. Please bring your insurance details (if not sent beforehand) as well as passport details (if you’re not a US citizen) with you. We can’t wait to meet you!
  • What will the accommodations be like?
On this trip, you’ll stay in established campsites (4 nights), glamping in cabins (2 nights), bush camp (1 night), and hostel (1 night - note hostel is dorm-style, separated by gender). Most of the campsites we stay at are established campgrounds with flush toilets and hot showers. However we try to get out into the wilderness and this means 1 night is at bush camp with an outhouse only and no showers. But don’t worry, you will be rewarded with spectacular views on glaciers and mountains and the next campsite we go to the shower will feel even better. If you are in doubt, please contact us: we also do carry water with us, so that you can have a basic wash, if you’d like to.
  • What is the overland vehicle like?
Infinite Adventures’ overland vehicle is unique here in North America. Their converted US school bus provides ample space for everyone to stretch out along with providing at least 8 passengers tables for card playing, journal writing etc. The multitudes of windows are big and open easily to allow you to take pictures at any time from the best angles. This vehicle becomes a large part of the experience and even is considered by most as their "home", including: Viewing platform on top of vehicle for taking 360 degree pictures of wildlife or landscape, Wood rack to carry firewood for campfires, Interior tables for at least 8 people to write journals or play cards during the ride, Coolers for drinks and food, Individual overhead lockers for personal belongings, Overhead lights and speakers (to switch on and off individually), Individual seats (no benches) which are fitted with seatbelts, Plenty of windows which are not tinted and open for maximum view and possibility to take photos at any time, On-board safe for passenger money/passports, Exceptionally high safety rating (statistics show that school buses built after 1977 are 8 times safer than passenger vehicles), Ability to withstand the worst gravel roads
  • What will the food be like?
A typical camp breakfast could be toast with spreads, cereal, tea and coffee, and occasional hot breakfast such as eggs or pancakes. Lunch is almost always a sandwich heaped high with healthy salad and assorted fillings, sometimes with fruit to follow. Dinner might be a BBQ, risotto, pasta dish and there is always the chance to try some local food. We cater to vegetarians, vegans, gluten and lactose free guests. If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking and also remind us at your welcome meeting.
  • What skill / experience level is required for this trip?
There is no previous experience required to join this trip, however you should love the outdoors and camping. You should be able to walk for a few miles every day (with more strenuous hikes being optional).
  • What will group participation on this trip look like?
On an overland journey you are more than just a passenger, you’re part of the crew, pitching in to set up camp, shop for food, cook and generally help out. We operate a rota system, dividing the group into smaller units, so that these duties are shared equally amongst the group. These jobs will include things like collecting water and firewood, loading the back locker, etc. While camping on overland journeys, all meals cooked on campsites will be included and this means you will help once in a while preparing dinner.
  • What other kinds of other travelers should I expect on my trip?
Adventures with a focus on the outdoors and camping tend to draw like-minded people, though you could be joined by people of various ages, backgrounds, and countries.
  • Will I be able to charge my electronic devices on the bus?
Our overland vehicle will be equipped with 12 volt sockets and USB charging points to charge your iPod, MP3 player, camera, laptop and mobile phone. Please be aware that only a limited number of equipment can be charged at a time and you cannot operate high voltage gear like hair dryers. Batteries may also be recharged from hotel room wall sockets and the majority of the campsites we stay at have electrical outlets so please bring along your normal charging adapters as well. You will need to ensure that you have the correct country adaptor for your specific charger.
  • Will we have wifi and cell phone reception?
Alaska is called “The Last Frontier” for a reason! Some of the campsites and lodges we stay do offer wifi, but some of them run on satellite connection, which is not as reliable and fast as broadband. However we will make you aware of internet cafes and any wifi possibilities that will occur during our trip.
  • What gear should I bring? Do you offer rentals?
Please see the packing list above. You can rent a sleeping bag and/or sleeping pad directly from Infinite Adventures though we do recommend bringing your own.
  • What is the maximum number of guests on this trip?
Infinite Adventures will cap this trip at 16 guests.
  • Is there a minimum age required for this trip?
    18. Guests 12 and older can join if accompanied by a legal guardian.
  • Do I need to purchase trip insurance?
While neither is required, we strongly recommend purchasing both trip insurance and medical evacuation insurance. We partner with World Nomads for trip insurance.
  • What if I need to cancel?
Should you need to cancel for any reason, evo will default to Infinite Adventures’ following cancellation policy: For cancellations made prior to 60 days before departure, a $300 deposit per person is retained and the remainder of your trip cost will be refunded. For cancellations made 45-59 days before departure, 50% of your trip cost will be refunded. For cancellations made within 45 days of departure, your trip is 100% nonrefundable. We strongly recommend that you purchase trip insurance to protect your investment, we recommend World Nomads. Infinite Adventures reserves the right to cancel your trip for any reason 45 or more days prior to departure (full refunds will be made in this instance).
Testimonials
Infinite Adventures was wonderful and we will never forget our vacation or the people we met along the way. The trip itself was very low-key, which both my husband and I really enjoyed. If you are looking to get off of the beaten path, away from people, and feel like you are out camping with friends then this is the tour for you.

Trip Guests
The trip was one of the best I have done! Incredible wildlife, scenery, action adventures and a fantastic team leading us. Nothing was too hard, and if we wanted to make changes to our itinerary, Dave and Nat were very flexible. If you are looking for a trip which gets you up close and personal and into the real Alaska, then this one is for you! Be prepared for great memories and lots of laughs. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
