I purchased two of the medium Rolling Thunder bags mainly for bike and ski trip. They roll great and can cinch down tight with a full load.

These bags are great for riding in a trunk, back of an SUV, or in the bed of a pickup during in climate weather. Keeps out most of rain and show if riding down the road in the bed.

One note of caution is use during air travel. The upper corners wore out earlier than I would have expected. The corners need bumpers or reinforcement similar to what you'd find on a regular suitcase. One end of the bag is rigid, and these corners take the most abuse. One of my bags has both corners torn open after just two trips on a plane after logging months of trips in trucks and SUVs.

Would be 5 stars if not for this, but overall a good bag.

Bought this bag out of recommendation from a friend in late aug, and its my first north face bag. Too bad that I read about the airtravel review a little too late. The rolling thunder was scratch, torn and crack from one way travel to Singapore and i was shock as my other 21" regular that is also checked in was doing perfectly fine without any sign of scratch, it makes me wonder was it due to misshandling by airliner or was it not design for air travel at all. It is definitely the latter when comparing to my other travel luggage.

Hope that it will survive the return trip to US next month, and hope that North Face would do something to improve the quality of its material.

I have taken a dozen photos from different parts of the bag that shows damages (from handle, to bottom corner etc) and have only posted 1 image due to the limit of posting on the website (although it stated 2).

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - Medium:

I do a lot of air miles and my Rolling Thunder (medium) has been my luggage for the passed four years or so. Now is a good time to reflect over that. It's been an effort keeping my Rolling Thunder on the road, and has been since the very first trip. All of the screws and bolts look very macho, but they come undone. The corners ripped out quickly and I've done multiple repairs to fix those. On the base inside the bag is a stiff board: that broke last time I travelled. The material looks tough, but scuffs and wears quickly. The wear and tear this bag has had is just what you expect from air travel - no more and no less. I love the bag's features and its size, but really, for the price paid, its not up to the task. Pity.

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - Medium:

I have 2 of these bags, and I purchased them 12 months or so apart. I used both of them for a recent 3 week trip to southern Africa that involved both business (suits, dress shirts, shoes etc) and adventure (60 kg of rock climbing gear). They are relatively bulletproof, are easily locked with a single padlock (really, really important for international travel), they are easy to spot in baggage claim, and they are easy to navigate with due to their large wheels and really sturdy collapsable handles and frame. My only complaint is, as has been noted by another reviewer, airline baggage handling systems eat the bags' exterior coating, and the only corners that are designed to take baggage handling abuse are the 2 corners that have wheel assemblies that include a rigid plastic shell that covers the corner. As much as I truly love these bags (and I am really, really picky about my gear), The North Face would do well to modify the bag design to be far more air travel-proof.

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - Medium:

The TNF ROLLING THUNDER - MEDIUM is perfect for travel. I bought this bag to replace an old JanSport backpack/suitcase that finally gave out after several years/miles/adventures. I got tired of carrying my luggage and have always seen people with luggage with wheels but never found anything that seemed durable till I found this beauty. It seems to be built of quality materials and stands up to the TNF toughness so far. I was debating between the Large and the Medium and the Medium has plenty enough room for a week or two of travels as long as you??re not changing twice a day. Looking forward for several years/miles/adventures with this piece of luggage!

I whent on a 28 days trip to Spain. This bag saw pretty bad situations... Fell down from a taxi, splashed on by a Bus, Rained on it, Paked it with other luggages on trains. And my content was pefectly protected. This bag can handle any hard situations you can imagine. And the praticle thing about this bag is the size. It is square so it is easy to storage . It's easy to spot on the carrousel. It rolls like a marvel. The wheels are hard to brake. This bag is some serious bag. The inside mesh bag is handy. To bad they didn't made an outside zipper to have acces to the content of the mesh bag from outside and inside the bad. Other then that, this is the bag to have for mid to long trips.

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - Medium:

I am a weekly business traveler and consider myself a tough critic of luggage and handbags. I ditched my roll-on and larger 22" ballistic nylon bags from a major luggage manufacturer in favor of this bag.

The soft sided walls of this bag allow for greater capacity than a formed ballistic nylon bag. I've been able to pack two weeks worth of business casual attire into this bag.

Further evaluation of this bag as an owner reveals much more thoughtfulness in the design than was evident when scrutinizing in the showroom. The length of the handle extension is perfectly sized to stack my North Face backpack on top.

The wheel design is extremely rugged. While I wish that the wheels pivoted like some of the newer bags, I suspect the fixed wheels are more favorable for durability. I can see how pivoting wheels would be considered more fragile than the more protected low-profile wheels on this bag.
