I bought the rolling thunder specifically for road trips. My girlfriend and I needed a luggage that would hold both of our gear, and normal non outdoor essentials. I have used it for mountain biking (car camping) trips, snowboarding, and a road trip to Riudoso.

It has been carried upstairs with the handles and rolled around on dirt, grass, and puddles of water with no problem. It is reinforced in all of the right places along with not having to much unnecessary material. My girlfriend and I have been able to pack 3 days worth of clothes each along with both of our gear. It arrived within 3 business days!

North Face makes beautiful bags with appealing color schemes and designs. The pockets zip easily and were placed with thought. The two external pockets on the new Rolling Thunder 22 are great for storing books and magazines that you can easily find before putting your bag in the overhead bin. The bags roll smoothly and quietly with their large rubber wheels. The RT 22 has numerous external handles and now includes a strap for attaching a secondary bag. The suitcase fits perfectly in standard sized overhead bins and fits sideways in a regional jet. The upgraded base support over the last iteration (Rolling Thunder size Small) should keep the bottom from crushing down over time and yet still provides just enough storage space for a few days of travel.

My only frustration with this bag is the handle... and it is a major frustration. The first few uses of the handle are always exciting. It extends and stows smoothly with no noticeable wobble and looks like the sturdiest handle on any bag ever made.

I used and warrantied a RT (size small) bag twice with broken handles before upgrading to the new RT 22 with hopes that the "handle issue" had been fixed. With both original handles, the button mechanism snapped and one side of the handle would pull away from the other. This past week, I took my brand new RT 22 on it's first trip. I lightly loaded the bag and babied the handle, thinking to myself "I'm going to make this bag last as long as possible!" The handle worked fine on my first leg of the trip, but wouldn't stow past the half way point by the time I boarded my flight home. In order to restow the handle past the half way point I now have to slam it several times like I'm vigorously pumping a bike tire.

Bottom line:
Buy this bag if you want a bag that will get complements from random travelers.
Don't buy this bag if you want a bag with a functioning handle.

Rolling Thunder - 22inch Review

By

from Los Angeles

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - 30":

I was a hesitant at first when purchasing the Rolling Thunder rolling luggage bag. I read the reviews carefully on last years model. Biggest concern was durability. Especially since others that purchased last years bag were unhappy with the bottom corners wearing out in short time. When I got my bag i was extremely satisfied! I saw that most of the issues were addressed for the new model. Love the size. Perfect for weekend trips and works as a carry on. Not to mention the great color way of the Black/Red Rolling Thunder. Definitely completes the overall look I'm going for when traveling for business. And the Lifetime warranty ensures me that North Face stands behind their products.

Great bag! I feel confident that the airlines will need some serious muscle to mess this bag up. Just flew with Delta and fit perfectly in the overhead compartment.

Kinda pricey for what you get. Could have added a laptop computer sleeve on the back side for easier storage. Overall stylish and light weight works great for overhead compartments.

Dream Bag

By

from New York

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - 30":

I have always preferred traveling with rolling duffles over suitcases and have gone through many brands over the years. I rarely write reviews - however, I think I have finally ended my obsessive quest to find the perfect travel luggage. These bags are high quality in every way. I bought the 22" and the 30" together and although they are both a bit heavier than I expected them to be, everything about them is so well designed making them easy to pack and travel with. The red handle with the side buttons are smart! The 22" holds about almost a weeks worth of summer clothing if packed with packing cubes. The 30" was more than enough for a two week trip to Asia. I was apprehensive about the Brunette brown design but the bags are really quite attractive in person and stand out in the luggage area. Very impressed with North Face!

High quality, design makes it small

    By

    from Undisclosed

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - 30":

I replaced an old Samsonite 22" rolling suitcase with the Rolling Thunder 22". The exterior dimensions TNF provides matches my Samonsite exactly. However, the Rolling Thunder has tapered sides, meaning the overall volume is much less than a suitcase that is perfectly rectangular. As a result, the Rolling Thunder is smaller than the suitcase I'm replacing.
Other than that, the bag seems to be made with high quality... time will tell if it holds up to my ~15 year old Samonite.

    Sturdy and reasonably light

    By

    from Venice, CA

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - 30":

Have only used it once, but so far so good. I travel a lot, and have killer many roller bags along the way, so i know what I like and what features don't get used or don't survive. I never check a bag.

This one is sturdy, stands and rolls well when packed, and has just enough organization without a lot of added weight. The handle feels like it will go the distance, and it won't get hard to open or close if the case is a little overstuffed like some brands (I'm talking to you, TravelPro). The zippers are massive, and there isn't anything sticking out which a baggage handler could rip off for sport. The gray color is also a nice background to write on with a sharpie - much better ID/ theft deterrent than a luggage tag.

It's coming to Costa Rica soon where it will go on cars, buses, water taxis and small planes. I'm sure its not watertight, but I fully expect it will keep contents dry through rainshowers and muddy puddles. I also don't see any problem with it getting thrown, dragged, or strapped to the top of a bus. Hopefully it comes back with some character...

          By

          from New York City

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Bag - 30":

Recently taken delivery on the Rolling Thunder 22" Bag and it has made 3 trips, well constructed and very light, but seems to be very strong with durable material, the lack of a harder shell material like its predecessor doesn't seem to be bad, the interior is accessed without opening the bag in half so that is a plus access-wise. Good wheel set and handle also seem pretty tough. Time will tell as we still have several trips to go in the next few weeks.

I did a lot of research for a travel bag, looking at some major players (patagonia, mountain hardware, etc..) and ended up picking this bag. I have done over 27 trips in just over 7 months. This bag has done it all, from flying an airplane both carry on and through checked in luggage, being strapped on the back of an ATV going up a mountain in the snow. The bag is water resistant and water rolls off the nylon, but the bag is not waterproof.
