In the last three months, I've carried and worn my ThermoBall Hoodie for about 300 miles of backpacking, hiking, snowshoeing and search and rescue missions. At just a hair under 14 ounces and highly compressible, it awaits undetected in my pack and it's unbelievable warmth shrouds me when it turns chilly. For the weight, it is the warmest and most versatile jacket that I own.

The perfect place for this jacket was during late-fall backpacking in the Adirondack High Peaks. In the course of a day it went from sunny warmth, to drenching rain and then to snow. As the only puffy jacket I had with me, its hydrophobic synthetic insulation excelled where a down jacket would have soaked up water and failed. On other trips, I've purposely walked in freezing rain while wearing this jacket ??? though it was wet (duh) it still retained its thermal properties.

Over the years, I've tried other synthetic-filled jackets but the ThermoBall is by far the warmest and I admit that I was skeptical when I saw how thin it was. Though in winter camps and belay stations, I'll still reach for my heavier down jacket, I needed something for layering. It is nearly impossible to stretch my rain shell over a thick down jacket and not feel like a giant marshmallow wandering through the woods. This ThermoBall jacket works perfectly layering though and I've put it to the test with single-digit temperatures. I can't wait till January when I get to use it for a few truly cold multiday winter backpacking and mountaineering trips.

I received this jacket as part of the #TNFLocals #AMBSDR program and I've enjoyed doing my best to drag it through the mud, encrust it in ice and push it to the limits as I push mine.

Bought this in-store along with the McMurdo parka to prepare for the Canadian winter because according to the North Face employee, a parka should never be worn unless it's below zero or -5 degrees C.

It was my fault that I even asked to try out the Thermoball Hoodie because the reviews here were praising it so much. Extremely dissatisfied with the product.

1. Feels cheap
2. Thin (the thermoballs are 'supposed' to be have a very high warmth-to-weight ratio. Nonsense.)
3. Threads start fraying from the fastener and zip ropes.
4. Most importantly, not warm enough. Can't wear it by itself unless its 15 degrees or up. Need to layer up as usual (I specifically went to get a parka to avoid this, got 'convinced' to buy this too)

I guess I was dumb enough to fall for that marketing trick. There are other brands out there that have better builds and are warmer than this for the same price. Won't recommend this.

I recently had a patagonia nano puff jacket with hoodie and it really didn't help at all with the wind and environment that i was in. They made it for casual wear. i found out about this jacket a couple of weeks ago and i love it so much.. keeps me warm and is pretty tough. i wear it to work everyday and i doesn't smell bad. so overall this jacket is a great buy, for a person who loves to work and play in the outdoors

I like the jacket but for this price it should be perfect. The size adviser told me I needed an extra small. This jacket isn't made in xs so I went with the small. It fits well in the shoulders, but a little loose in the chest and waist. I like the ultra light feel of the jacket. It doesn't feel like I'm wearing a jacket. One feature I would ad as a designer, a cinch cord for the hood. If it is windy, the hood is useless, however. It is a great jacket.

Honestly, I was skeptical of this jacket when I first saw it, it was very thin and lightweight and I didn't think it would hold up to the abuse of the outdoors. I was very wrong, this jacket is very warm. I wear a men's M.

        Pros:
-very warm, I wore it down to 4 F (-20 with wind chill) at 88% humility without getting cold
        -lightweight, you hardly feel it
        -smooth surface does not catch
-quality materials, stitching is good, although not excellent
        -self stuff into pocket

        Cons:
        -no wrist adjustments
        -no hood cinch
-15D may have durability issues later on, would be better if it had 20D nylon
-Because Thermoball is a new tech, the cost is just a bit high.

Overall, I was impressed. It is very warm for its weight and is a joy to wear.

        Not a well made jacket

        By

        from Undisclosed

I purchased this jacket in December and the down is starting to come out the back of it making the jacket look old. It's very sad the jacket did not make it past 90 days of use. I spoke with the NortFace warranty department and they told me it would take them 8 weeks to fix the issue with my jacket.

        North Face Thermoball Hoodie

        By

        Really, Really nice design.
        Pros-
-Folds up really small (in it's own pocket)
-Very Warm (Fine down to 0 degrees)
        -Sturdy Zippers
        -Big Pockets
        -Nice Hood

        Cons-
-Material seems a but flimsy (thin), I'm afraid a key or a sharp corner on a table might rip it.
-Stitching is good but not excellent.

BE VERY CAREFUL OPENING THE BOX!!! There is absolutely nothing between the coat and the top of the box.
Price seems a bit high. I guess it is new technology though.

WOULD BE 5 STARS IF CUT BIGGER THAN LAST YEAR'S SLIMDOWN

        By

        from Gunnison, CO

The very first model of this was cut correctly for field use. It had enough room that it was not always SKIN-TIGHT. Then they slimmed down the cut so we quit using them. Hopefully they realized their mistake and made this bigger all around. If you are going to make jackets smaller, please make 3xl and 4xl sizes which would normally be a xxl. This is the best synthetic jacket out there, but you better not be muscular if it's cut like last year's.

        Men's Thermoball Hoodie

        By

        from NYC

Had my eye on this for a while and purchased it well ahead of winter weather arriving. Biggest decision was color- I got the silver.I know it will work as well for walking around in the city as a hike in the woods come the next Polar Vortex. I'm very keen on the idea of it staying warm even if it's soaked through, unlike real down. It's light, packable for travel and look's as good as it fit's. Bring on the cold weather!

The thermoball gets the job done! As a North Face Locals ambassador, I was sent this product and asked to put it to the test. My initial assessment of the jacket was: compact, light, and very comfortable. Over the next few weeks I put it through the ringer in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. As an avid rock climber and outdoor enthusiast, it's important to minimize weight without compromising quality. This jacket saves space and kept me toasty even when we were out climbing in 20 degree temps! I would recommend this jacket to anyone. #TNFlocals #AMBSDR

I have owned this jacket for abut a month now. I can honestly say I was skeptical of the extremely light weight fabric.... but to my amazement you can wear this is 30 degree NYC weather with a T-shirt underneath. I have also worn it in colder weather with a sweater or thermal long sleeve under it and I have been super warm. One of the best jackets I have ever owned....

              I LOVE this jacket.
I wasn't sold on the quilted look at first, but I have come around due to the jacket's functionality. It's super light weight and offers zero restrictions on your movement so it's great for exercising or just driving to work. I live in Texas, so i haven't been able to field test it in a blizzard, but it has kept me warm in windy, high 30 and 40 weather.

Looks like a heavy jacket, but super light and great for wet weather conditions. I went with the green camo for a more urban look, but all of the color combos are pretty fly! Personally, I felt the coat was on the big side, so order one size down.

I went with the color TNF Black in size XL. Like others was skeptical of how thin this jacket is. I wear it everyday. It is very warm in 25-30 dergree weather in Ohio with only a t-shirt underneath. Feels warm and very comfortable. VERY lightweight. Has a classy quilted pattern. This jacket definately draws a lot of attention and compliments. Not as shiny as it was in other online pictures i saw before buying. Doesn't have the "bubble jacket" look at all. I can fold the hood in half while its up and it acts as a barrier from cold wind without being all the way on. Nice big pockets with zippers. I almost fit my 10 inch tablet in one! Almost impossible for things to fall out while sitting etc. Jacket also has adjustable waistband that can be pulled from inside the pockets or the outer bottom portion of the jacket.

The coat conviently folds into its own pocket (with the jacket on, the stow away pocket is the left pocket with the stow tag). The pocket has a reversible zipper to close nicely. Just pull the pocket inside out and start tucking. An amazing feature for this jacket!

The only downer I had with this jacket was that the main zipper did not have the red string on it as pictured. Instead it was black. Certainly not a deal breaker by any stretch.

Worth every penny buying directly from North Face, as there are a lot of fake variants out there. I received it as a Xmas gift, by far the best jacket I've ever owned. Will more than likely by another color.

Stellar warmth in a light package

Purchased the thermoball hoodie as a midlayer for backcountry skiing and fall backpacking. This jacket packs down very small and is incredibly warm for its weight. I went with this over other puffies due its synthetic down, allowing it to retain its warmth, even when wet which is crucial for us Pacific Northwest folk. Haven't tested it out extensively in wet snow yet, but it held up just fine in our typical drizzle. It looks great as well, and can be worn casually. However, this jacket is very warm and I'm typically sweating in it with just a t-shirt on in any temperature over 40F. Lastly, as others have mentioned, the thread on this is fairly light, but I haven't had it long enough to review its durability.

I finally got to wear my #thermoball that #tnflocals sent me a while back the past two weeks in Joshua Tree National Park. Never have I worn a jacket that has kept me so warm, but also not restricted my ability to climb hard boulder problems at all. On top of that, it looks great on me. It also zips up into its own pocket for minimal storage space usage. Most other jackets take up half the space in my pack, while the Thermoball hardly makes a dent in my storage space. All in all, I am beyond stoked on this amazing piece of gear and can't wait for future adventures with my Thermoball. I am also grateful to be an #ambsdr for The North Face so that I can have the amazing opportunity to try out amazing gear like this before it hits the shelves.

AMAZING warmth for such a thin shell. Feels like it has an internal heating source! If you want an incredibly thin jacket that will keep you warm (so far this winter, it has kept me warm in 20F with a wind chill to 5F while walking the dogs!) then just buy it. I waffled for a month (cost - fortunately, it was an unusually warm December). Definitely worth the $$$$, if you got it. LOVE the hood, too.

I always thought the North Face was a brand for poser outdoors men. But this jacket proved me wrong with its incredible heat retention and durability. I used this jacket everyday for survey work in Alberta and it was warm enough with just a base layer. The prairie winds didn't penetrate through this jacket even though this jacket is fairly thin. Thermoball is an amazing technology!! Highly recommended this jacket.

Super warm, it's almost amazing how much heat this jacket makes/retains. Ultra light, packable displacement for hiking.
Fabric is quite for hunting situation and love the fact that the under color is hunter Orange.
I used the size tool on the web site and it??s spot-on.

Very happy and by far my favorite hoodie to date.

This jacket is outstanding - versatile, warm, & compact. I received one as a TNF Locals ambassador but liked it so much, I purchased thermoballs for my wife & son. My thermoball jacket has kept me comfortable during early am Rocky Mountain hikes, foggy redwood runs, and long, transatlantic flights. Plus, it looks great. I would highly recommend the jacket (especially the hoody) to anyone for looking midweight insulation. It can be used effecitvely in many conditions - including as an outer layer in chilly, damp weather or as a midlayer for cold weather. #tnflocals #ambsdr

Simply the BEST jacket I have owned.

It is still a bit early to fully review this, however, So far, I am nothing but happy with this jacket. Previously I owned a few jackets which were mainly snow / skiing jackets, and I must admit I was highly skeptical about this one considering how light and thin it was. However, I just wore it ( without any layering ) in low 20s and it was perfectly warm. Note: I was hiking wearing this and I think this jacket needs that. It wont be as warm if you are not active. It makes it the best jacket for hiking / other physical activity in chilly / windy weather because of its light weight.

Wind doest cut through at all
You can wear it in snow as well
A LOT of rain might just get throught, however light rain is again fine.
All in all i give this 5 stars...

P.S. Main reason to buy this over the regular thermoball was ofcourse the hoodie :)
