This jacket is interesting because on first look it seemed to only fit a niche market. Its not as light as a typical wind jacket but not heavy enough to insulate like a full on softshell. So whats the point, right? I have had a few different wind shells of varying materials and something has always detracted from their performance. Either they shred like tissue or trap moisture like a trash bag. Enter the Alpine Start Hoody which is essentially an ultralight softshell. At only a few more ounces then your favorite 4.5 ounce wind layer it blocks sun, wind, and light precip while breathing like a champ. I decided to put it to the durability test while thrashing up Vision Quest on the King of Pain in Indian Creek. Not only did it take a lickin but it kept on tickin with nary a blemish and at the end of all that wide goodness I was still dry as a bone. The cut and breathability allow it to be an exceptional running jacket while there is still room for a light fleece layer underneath. I havnt tested it myself but ill bet this jacket is nearly bug proof, which could prove useful on those heinous mosquito days in the Wind Rivers. The features are well thought out. Single cinch hood that keeps a brim for keeping sun out even when fully cinched. The elastic cuffs are sized such that I can pull the sleeves up without constricting my forearms (Im no Popeye) but they wont ride down over my hand. The sleeves could maybe be an inch longer but I prefer the length for rock climbing where I dont want to be dealing with material while jamming/pulling. Dont expect to pair an under the cuff glove with this jacket and maintain full protection while ice climbing. Over the cuff or Punisher style gloves would probably work fine but I havnt tried anything out. Im not typically much of a gear sprayer and I realize this sounds more like an advertisement then a review, but I have been so impressed with this jacket I felt compelled. BD splits the extremes found in typical softshells and ultralight wind jackets straight down the middle to create a highly versatile and well though out layer that has become a go to piece in my kit for most conditions.

I'd like to give this jacket more than three stars. The Schoeller fabric seems like it will hold up well and with nanosphere it might as well have a waterproof membrane. The cut is slim being that its a fast and light shell. The fabric has a nice stretch to it. The hood fits well and has adequate adjustments. My one big gripe is the sleeves are about an 1" short. This isn't my first piece of apparel from Black Diamond either. I am 6'1", 160 lb, 40" chest, 33" sleeve, and 30" waist. I have a Medium in their Coefficient Hoody and in the Dawn Patrol LT hoody. When I wear the Coefficient under the Alpine Start after moving my arms back and forth a bit during normal walking the Coefficient's sleeves are sticking out from the Alpine unprotected as its shorter sleeves start to ride up my arms. In contrast the sleeves of my Medium Dawn Patrol LT also in Schoeller fabric are considerably longer by at least an inch or maybe even two. Those sleeves when not tightened with the velcro closures get close to my knuckles whereas the sleeves from the Alpine Start ride above my wrist. Everything else about the fit is great. I wouldn't go up a size to have longer sleeves but a baggy fit. As it is the Coefficient layers well underneath and I could see the Alpine Start as being a great backup to throw over the Coefficient if the weather adds wet to the cold.

Versatile, Lightweight and surprisingly tough

By

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I purchased this jacket to for AT skiing and ice climbing in drier conditions. It has exceeded expectations. The Alpine Start Hoody is lightweight and breathable, but cuts the wind nicely. Perfect when paired with a fleece mid layer for high output skiing and climbing in below freezing temps. For colder weather I pair it it with a light insulated jacket and it works great. I was surprised how well the jacket protects against the elements, light snow or water from wet climbs beads and falls off. Hopefully the NanoSphere treatment lasts. Has survived alder/devils club bushwhacks, typical to south central Alaska, unscathed. I'm 6'2 about 185, satisfied with a Large.

Alpine start... and end

By

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

Put it on in the morning, take it off back at the car. I have brought this along on many days in the mountains and kept it on much longer that I would other jackets. It breathes very well. Or should I say, it actually breathes, unlike many "high output" jackets out there. Packs up well into its pocket, not too big, not too small. I own a handful of other wind jackets and this is my go-to. The fabric is more durable than the others I have had, and I think the trade off for the weight is worth it if you are climbing with it or want it to last longer than other jackets.

Love it

By

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

Was a bit skeptical ordering this and was mentally prepared to return it. I read reviews on the fit and wasn't sure it would work. I was pleasantly surprised to really, really like it. I'm 6', 190#, and the L has a nice trim fit. I could wear a light layer under it. The XL was too big/baggy. The neck area on the Stance Belay Hoody is really tight on me, and I read some reviews saying the same thing about the Alpine Start. I have found this to not be the case. The hood also fits really well and snugs down nicely. Part of my skepticism came from expecting this to be a glorified version of the Patagonia Houdini. Quite the contrary. This jacket is way more comfortable due to the stretch, and breathes WAY better. The Houdini always felt a little plastic baggish to me. I wore this yesterday in 30-40mph winds and was impressed with the wind resistance.

Keeps getting better!

By

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I have owned 3 of these starting with the first generation. The first gen. had a slimmer fit, the second gen. adjust the fit to where I can wear a light puffy underneath and the current gen. improved the hoody adjustment. I haven't worn out the first 2 that I bought, just liked the current iteration the best. The material is a great balance of breathability, lightweight and durable. My first gen. Alpine Start has one hole in it from a mtb crash in rocky terrain. The hole was maybe 3mm in dia. I was really surprised I didn't shred it. I wear one almost everyday or carry it with me as a just in case layer. I'm using the current version in conjunction with the Deployment Hybrid jacket and this has been an incredible combo for cold high output sessions. Bottom line: Get one or two!

Light and Tough

By

from Cincinnati

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I was very hesitant about this jacket when I first received it. It's super thin and I couldn't imagine it being very tough because of its thinness. I just got back from a 4 day ski trip in Park City, Utah and I wore this jacket as my outer layer three out of the four days in weather ranging from cold to warm to rainy to snowy and it didn't disappoint once. Two days out of the four, I only wore this jacket and two thin wool layers and I couldn't have been more comfortable. I also took some pretty big falls down some runs that were fairly icy and I thought that the jacket would have for sure ripped or snagged, but after checking the jacket, it still looked brand new. This is no where near an insulating layer, but pair with some good layers and this jacket excels, not to mention it weighs practically nothing.

Surpassed Expectations

By

from Iqaluit, NU, Canada

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I bought this for cool season running and warm season ski touring. At first feel I was worried. I thought it wouldn’t be tough enough. Well since Fall 2015, it has become my primary fair weather winter shell. Gore Tex ices up inside and other materials let the winds blow right in, it’s a constant balance between breathability and wind resistance. BD has figured out that balance with this Jacket. It is so light, wears well with layers underneath, packs so tiny, and even to my surprise brushes clean. In the coldest conditions it has not built up sweat ice yet and has gotten me through some quick and heavy arctic squalls in good humour. I’m considering buying a second one. Just in case. I would love though, if there were 2 more pockets. Otherwise this jacket is very well designed, well built and surpassed my expectations.

THE climbing shell

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

This is hands down an amazing jacket. Perfect size for stuffing in its chest pocket and clipping to the harness. I have used it on cold mornings with some wind approaching the crag over my hot forge puffy and couldn't really ask for a better 10-20 degree approach combo with some light wind on a steep approach to the climb. I have climbed many chimneys/off widths with this thing and always get to the belay and inspect the jacket expecting to find some holes and have yet to see any wear/damage. The only thing this jacket tore on was a metal burr on the edge of a truck bed that no material would survive. Get this jacket, you won't be disappointed.

Awesome

By

from New Hampshire

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I usually hate climbing in shells. They are either too crinkly and stiff (Gore-Tex), or they are too bulky (most soft shells), or both. The alpine start hoody is neither. It's light weight, stretchy, and most importantly, it doesn't get in my way when I'm climbing. The Schoeller fabric gives just a touch of wind protection on those blustery days. I wear it on almost all of my climbing days when the temperature is below 50 degrees.

The shell you'll want on your route

By

from Quebec, Canada

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

This jacket is fantastic. A super light layer that gives you great wind protection and weather resistance for long approches, skinning up your line or to bring with you on multi pitches. I wear it all the time. The fitting is a little more snug that a regular shell, which can be a surprise if you want to put insulation underneath it. You need to pay attention for rock abrasion, since the fabric is so light and thin. Other then that little heads up, this product is a must have if you want to play out in the field. I've used it for touring, climbing, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, well any active outdoor activity!

Love this jacket

By

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I wasn't 100% sure what i would wear this jacket for. I have only had it for a month. What I can say is its awesome. I have been wearing it almost like a shirt some days. its so comfy and with the winds lately and variable weather it has been great. I just took it on a trip to Montreal and wore it running and another time wore it over my down parka in a rain storm walking to dinner. Its so light you might want to wear it every day.

Can see this becoming my favorite layer

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I just wanted to write some quick impressions (having only used it once), but mainly wanted to comment on the size. I'm 6'2" with average arms and a longer torso. I ordered a Large and it fits great. I appreciate the longer torso cut, as it fits my long torso well. I can easily see this becoming my favorite late spring, summer, and early fall layer. It doesn't insulate much as it breathes SO well. If it's slightly cool outside with a slight breeze, this is the perfect layer. Basically the perfect alpine summer layer. A car-to-car layer, if you will. The hood is fine and articulates well for looking around while climbing.

Great Wind Jacket

By

from Lander, WY

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

A lightweight, all-around jacket that is breathable enough to keep on all day. It provides good protection, even through high winds, and enough warmth to keep you moving on an early alpine start. I have worn this jacket on a number of climbs and hikes this summer and it has held up well against the abrasion. It is definitely quite durable despite its weight. The cinches on the hood allow you to get a great fit over a climbing helmet and the hood will stay put!

Fantastic minimalist wind jacket

By

from Minneapolis, MN, USA

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

This hoody performs fantastically. I've used mine in a variety of conditions across a range of altitudes and temperatures and it has done great across the board. It blocks the wind well, sheds light precipitation remarkably effectively and packs up into a tiny ball when not in use. I store it in the top pouch of my pack and whip it out when the wind howls or a rain squall blows through. I've also used it in heavy brush and woods and it has come out snag free.

Breathable, great shell.

By

from Seattle, WA

Comments about Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoodie:

I picked this up for an alpine biking trip in the Chilcotins, BC. It provided excellent protection from the wind but was breathable enough to pedal in it all day long. Surprisingly it held its own and didn't get snagged on rock and branches while riding. Also packs down to almost nothing. It's not quite waterproof enough for rainy outings in the PNW, but if it's misting or light rain it's great. Looking forward to testing it in winter conditions.
