Proto is short for prototype and the 2014 Never Summer Proto HDX Snowboard is continually evolving. The Proto HDX is just the wide version of the Proto HD. This year Never Summer developed a new Extended Transition Rocker Camber Profile which has a longer transition area that extends from the ends of the camber to a new Low Profile Tip and Tail. Glide and float characteristics are increased, and pressure over the ends of the contact points are decreased allowing effortless transitioning. The blunt tip and tail reduces swing weight for spinning while increasing the effective edge for stability, so no matter where you are on the mountain you can enjoy unmatched snap, power, pop plus amazing flotation in powder, edge hold, and high-speed stability!
Rocker Type
Extended Transition Rocker & Camber Profile (EXRC) - Longer transition area extending from the end of the camber and into the low profile tip / tail enhancing the inherent characteristics of our Original Rocker / Camber Profile. This is captured by the extended transition areas decreasing pressure over the ends of the effective edge, allowing the board to flow instead of pushing against the snow. This creates more fluid edge transfer, increases glide and powder floatation in flat areas of the board. EXRC improves edge hold when the camber is engaged yet is more forgiving and less likely to catch that edge when in neutral position.
Flex
Twin Shape - A symmetrical shape for equally precise performance riding regular or switch.
Flex Rating (1 Soft - 10 Stiff) - 5, medium flex good for pipe and park / freestyle riding
Shape
Twin Shape - A symmetrical shape for equally precise performance riding regular or switch.
Low Profile Tip / Tail (LPT) - A low profile in the nose and tail of the snowboard maximizes material contact with the snow for more powerful ollie / nollie pop and adds stability to your landings. LPT also reduces the plowing effect in the nose for better glide to the next feature and superior float when it's deep.
Vario Power Grip Sidecut - Multi-radius sidecut adds increased edgehold precisely where it's needed most, from 2 inches outside of each binding and inward toward the center of the board, providing added control and response in any conditions (Sidecut Radius numbers are an average).
Core
NS Superlight Wood Core - Taking their custom flight core even further, they've designed the SUPERLIGHT WOOD CORE specifically for the new Carbonium series which blends extremely light wood with durable hardwood for unmatched strength to weight ratio.
Laminates
Carbonium Laminate Technology - More carbon equals more power and performance. The new Carbonium Laminate Technology combines an advanced top and base carbon matrix to maximize torsional response and strength where it's needed most. The result is a lightweight yet powerful design that keep the Carbonium Series boards going stong for years.
Carbonium Dampening System (CDS) - The CDS greatly reduces vibration and provides unmatched high speed stability and control. Thin elastomeric rubber stringers reduce vibration from the metal edge and surrounding laminates. Stringers below the inserts and under the carbon dampen any additional vibration near the bindings, giving the Carbonium Series boards a smooth riding feel underfoot without sacrificing snap and power throughout the board.
Bi-Lite Fiberglass - BI-LITE fiberglass combines many of the strength characteristics of STS ADVANCED fiberglass with an ultra light glass fiber matrix. This delivers incredible freestyle and freeride performance without sacrificing durability.
STS Pretensioned Fiberglass - The world's best snowboard fiberglass, period. STS ADVANCED FIBERGLASS is pre-hardened, pre-tensioned, layered laminate that has added elastomer stringers between the 0 degree and 90 degree glass fibers the length of the effective edge. This produces a stronger bond between the individual glass laminates giving this snowboard unmatched strength, edge hold and performance.
Sidewalls
Sintered P-Tex Sidewall - Unlike conventional ABS sidewalls, that have a tendency to crack in colder temperatures, SINTERED P-TEX SIDEWALLS maintain their integrity at any temperature.
P-Tex tip and tail protection
Base
Durasurf XT Sintered 5501 Base - Crown Plastics has developed an exclusive, super fast, durable sintered base specifically for the Carbonium Series. Just the right amount of graphite has been added making it the fastest base NS has ever used.
Edges
Fully Wrapped Metal Edge - Provides unmatched carving ability and edge grip
Topsheet
Carbonium Topsheet - A very durable, scratch and chip resistant material with a high tech carbon fiber like visual. This textured material also provides more grip than a gloss topsheet working as a built in stomp pad.
Additional Features
Elastomeric Underfoot Stabilizers - Elastomeric Rubber Stabilizers directly below the mounting area provide optimum vibration absorption and increase high speed stability while reducing foot fatigue.
Harmonic Tip / Tail Dampeners - Harmonic dampeners in the tip and tail take out a large percentage of residual vibration by quieting the nose and tail. This enhances stability at speed, in variable snow conditions and on hard landings without deadening the liveliness and pop of the cambered areas.
Binding Compatibility
Never Summer snowboards offer 2x4 insert patterns.

Specs

  • Terrain: All-Mountain, Freestyle
    All-Mountain
All-mountain snowboards are designed for exploring the whole mountain. They are your go-to for a snowboard that will do anything. They feel at home on groomers, powder, park runs and almost anything in between. The vast majority of snowboarders choose all-mountain boards for their great versatility. If you’re just getting started or unsure of exactly what you need, an all-mountain snowboard is a great choice.
    Freestyle
Freestyle or park snowboards tend to be a bit shorter in length and love terrain parks, rails, jibs, trash cans, tree trunks, riding switch (non-dominant foot forward), wall rides and more. Freestyle boards often feature a true twin shape, and are typically selected by those looking to ride the terrain park. A more versatile variant of a freestyle board is the all-mountain freestyle, which combines the versatility of an all mountain snowboard with the playfulness of a freestyle snowboard.
  • Ability Level: Intermediate-Advanced
    Intermediate-Advanced
The majority of skiers/snowboarders fall into this level, whether you like to carve on groomers or venture into the powder. These skis/snowboards may be somewhat wider than beginner-intermediate skis, usually with a stronger wood core and sandwich sidewall construction. Depending on the type of ski, intermediate-advanced level skis may have full camber, rocker, or some combination of the two.
  • Rocker Type: Camber/Rocker/Camber
    Camber/Rocker/Camber
Camber/Rocker/Camber is a profile that’s specific to snowboards and which works because the rider’s weight flattens the two cambered areas. This design produces a strong, pressured carving zone between the rider’s feet and retains pop and carving precision at the tip and tail.
  • Shape: True Twin
  • Flex Rating: Medium
    Medium
The amount a snowboard flexes varies significantly between boards. Snowboard flex ratings are not necessarily standardized across manufacturers, so the flex may vary from brand to brand. Many manufacturers will give a number rating ranging from 1-10, 1 being softest and 10 being stiffest. Here at evo we have standardized the manufacturers' number ratings to a feel rating ranging from soft to very stiff. Generally you will find flex ratings of 1-2 as soft, 3-5 as medium, 6-8 as stiff, and 9-10 as very stiff. Flex ratings and feel may ultimately vary from snowboard to snowboard.
