I'm not the skier I reference in the title. This ski deserves 3 stars or even close to 4. The ski has a lot of pros, but the cons is why I would not purchase the ski for myself. The ski seems to be the love child of the Atlas and Bent Chetler, not as stiff and burly as the Atlas, but not as playful as the Bent Chetler. The ski has a tons of pop and stability at speed. When you flex this ski, it thrust you into your next turn which really inspires confidence for skiing all over the mountain. The titanium layer makes the ski light and responsive from edge to edge. With a 115+ underfoot, it has enough side cut to make skiing the groomers fun and effortless. The ski has plenty of float in the powder and with the pintail shape and less rocker in the tail, Atomic has created a stable, fat, all mountain powder ski. My overall impression is good, but it definitely lacked in a few areas for me. I thought the ski felt squirrelly when skiing through the crud at speed. With how stiff the ski is, I was surprised when I felt that the ski was a bit soft and damp when going through heavy PNW crud. How a ski handles the crud is a big determining factor for me. At slower speeds I felt like I had to work really hard to make the ski do what I want, once you speed things up…the ski seemed easier to handle, maybe a bit too unforgiving for me. Additionally, I prefer a ski that is a bit softer and has a more surfy feeling…like the Bent Chetler/Caylors/HellBents/JJ's etc. Bottom line. The Automatic is for the person that charges down anything and everything at breakneck speed. The ski has the ability to inspire confidence on anywhere on the mountain. This is a no-nonsense down to business ski.

I skied the Automatics at Alpental Today. They were great in the chopped up snow, seemed easy to turn in the bumps and were stable at the bottom of the hill when the speed got higher. I am really happy with the skis.

Flatter tail really held the end of the turns well. Very solid ski. Big tips were a little too much in tight trees but edge held great on and wind blown crusty snow.

This was my favorite Atomic demo. I'm 5'10 and rode the 193 so it was definitely big for me but once I got on some steeper slopes with some speed it was awesome to blast through pillows and go really fast.

Directional ripper... If you don't ski switch and prefer soft stuff this could be your only ski. Similar to the Rossi Super 7 with a bit more power in the tail.

A super lovely ski that does it all. turny when you want it but stable when you need it. This ski wants to be driven from a balanced position; it doesn't respond nearly as well if you get in the backseat. Not as much float as I expected in the foot of dense powder we tested it in, but predictable none the less. Tremendous handling in tight, steep trees.

A big, strong ski, that uses the big tip rocker to crush and carve narrow chutes. The tail is unforgiving and a little skittish due to the narrower tail than the Chetler. A center mount on the 193 would be ideal.

This ski is about what you'd expect for the likes of Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Dana Flahr. Charging, yet not so much that it loses too much of a playful feel. The basic idea was to create a cross between the Bent chetler and the Atlas, and they seem to have pulled it off exceptionally well. Being smaller than the Chets (117mm under foot), somewhat tapered and less rockered in the tail, it certainly likes to point and go. Yet even as a more hardcore AK ski, it still holds an edge and carves beautifully on the groomers, allowing for a more playful ski than you would get from the Atlas. I would think this would be a great choice for a NW one ski quiver, as there doesn't seem to be much it can't handle. I didn't get a chance to test it in any sort of fresh pow, but I can only imagine it would be a seriously great ride. I look forward to seeing a lot more of this ski in the future!

The Automatic is another big slugger from Atomic. It is a more directional version of the BentChetler, with a tail that is still turnier than the Atlas. In a 192, the Automatic likes to go fast, really fast. It make a big turn doesn't shutter when it hits chop. It felt very stiff underfoot and to the tail, but a little bit of tail rocker allowed it to still release, something I've always felt the Atlas was missing. I still prefer the BentChetler as it is more playful and poppy and less planky than the Automatic, but I would go with this ski if you like a full-out fast and stable ride.

I have been skiing Bent Chetlers for two whole seasons, which I absolutely love. After first hearing about the Automatic and its concept I wanted to get on a pair, it wasn't until a deep spring day I was able to grab a pair. I skied the 186, I'm 5'8 145lbs or so and ski the Benchetlers in the 183. Initially it was a bit different than I expected. I was very used to the the wider, twin-like tail on the Benchets. The Automatic's tail came around quicker and with more power. It wasn't as playful at medium speeds as my skis but they shined when you really open it up wide where little shifts in weight are needed to scrub speed. The stiffer profile and sclaed down rocker in the tail keeps it stable through chopped or at speed more so than the Bent Chetler. If you are looking for a playful, slightly narrower Bent Chetler this ski may surprise you. If you want a ski to charge lines, change directions quickly and ski away from most anything confidently this is your ski. Whether you want to mount some touring bindings like the Trakcer 16 bindings to bag some BC lines or charge your resort on some FFG 16s this ski will reward smooth aggressive skiing in all conditions.
