Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

This boot is excellent. I have an 8.5 foot length with a width size D. Salomon nailed the sizing of this boot. The liner has a simple open close locking mechanism that works like a charm and an integrated strap inside the shell that tightens the heel back into the boot and comes up across the shin to add a level of control that you just don't see from other boots. The shell itself has a pre-laced lower section that tightens the top of the foot with a single lace and a handle to really crank it down. The lower part of the boot has one locking mechanism to isolate the tightness of the lower section, and another to isolate and customize the tightness of the upper section which is awesome, because it means you can have a variable flex from the boot. Salomon has accurately given the Malamute a flex rating of 9. Another feature that Salomon has added is the Thermo-moldable liner with inserts to really get the boot to fit as right as possible. I am a Snowboard instructor and have put this boot through some rigorous runs, and can say that this is one of the most responsive boots I've ever worn. Awesome for groomed terrain where you really want to twist the board for carving, or just surfing powder in the trees, this boot will get you where you need to go.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

This is my first pair of stiff boots and they are great. Although it took a few runs to get used to them, once I was comfortable they were so responsive and supportive. Superior quality and good lacing system. I would not think these boots would be ideal for park, but then again my set up consists of a real stiff board with real stiff bindings. -- (Go down half a size..they will pack out)

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

Totally love these Malamutes. FYI, no significant changes from the 2013 to 2014 models (different colors and a little strap pocket outside boot to hold the lace adjuster).

I'm coming from a 2008 Salomon F22 Size 10. Those boots were totally awesome but now totally packed out so I needed some new boots. These seem to have similar features I liked about my old Salomon: the dual zone lacing system. Yet these are definitely A LOT stiffer, which I love and fit for my style (free-riding and carving on my Burton Custom X or Custom Flying V).

2 Big surprises are: 1) They have a huge footprint. Size 10 Malmutes versus my Size 10 F22s, it's is noticeably longer and wider (I took photos: almost an inch+!). The width barely fit into my Medium Burton bindings (about .5mm of space). 2) They are sized a lot bigger than they used to be. I used be Size 10, so I ordered a 10 thinking, it's the same brand so it should work... Nope! It was HUGE with about an inch of room from the end of my toe to the front of the boot! So I did a return and ordered a Size 9 (not even 9.5!) and when I put that on, it fit perfectly (a bit snug like it should for a new boot). Even putting my Size 9 Malamute side by side or sole to sole, they are still wider and longer than my old F22 Size 10s-- so they definitely made boots bigger. I thought the trend these days was to "downsize" the footprint of boots, but nope, not in this one... You have been warned. (This was the first time buying boots online-- I have always tried and bought them in person at the store-- but like I said, I had the same brand, so assumed it was sized consistently). At least EVO was really cool about doing the return/exchange.

Improvements here include fully removable liner, with optional ankle adjusters, Warm fuzzy material on the inner top to retain heat better, improved lace locking system (inner liner has a rotating lock and the outer lace locks better than before), dual zone adjustment capability-- very important for me, sometimes I like my bottom loose but the top tight, e.g. later in the day), grippy sole pattern that digs into ice/snow better.

Response is incredible for a "soft boot"-- if you're looking for a stiff boot, this is it, and for a reasonable price point too! There's a bit of lateral move, which is nice to load up for ollies or jumps, but front and back it is stiff and will respond right away which is what you want.

Weight-wise it is not incredibly light or incredibly heavy. My Size 9s weigh 1167 grams. The Size 10s weighed 1213 grams. They are slightly lighter than my old F22s.

Quality/longevity I am not worried about at all. My previous Salomon lasted me 5 years and on the outside they still look good. (Inside of course they are packed out-- the ankle holding mold has basically worn down and packed out to be almost flat now lol).

Oh, one thing I do miss about my F22s is the plastic patch at the rear of the inner liner that makes slipping your heels in and out of the boot smoother. The Malamutes don't have such a thing, so there's more friction and takes more effort. But once my feet are in and I'm tied in, they are super comfortable and just perfect.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

Warm, comfortable, all mountain boot. I like the flex and the durability of this boot. They lace up with one continuous lace and feel nice and tight, the heel strap that holds the liner in is nice for a secure heel cup feel. Although it makes it tough to re insert the liner after removing to dry them..
It took 5-10 days to break in, they pack out quiet a bit, so be sure to the right size. I wear a size 9 shoe and an 8 1/2 in this boot. It seemed like I could have gotten away with an 8 after they broke in. This is my second pair, and put over 100 days on the first pair.. The little plastic handles on the laces used to hook on the outside of the boot, they changed this to providing a little pocket on the inside of the tongue. I much preferred the hook on the outside of boot system, stuffing a piece of plastic into your boot after you get it all laced up just seems poorly thought out. ( though I haven't really noticed while riding)

          Pros
          Warm
          Comfy
          Stiff
          Durable
          Solid and simple lacing system

          Cons
          Liners difficult to reinsert
Larger foot print than other boots the same size
          Pack out a lot
Lace handles feels bulky when stuffed in the tongue area of boot.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

I have the Burton Ions - these are comfortable but, for my feet, do not provide great heel hold. Picked up the Malamutes and they have really helped my riding - better heel hold, less foot fatigue and better board control. The stiffness of the Malamutes also feels great to me - no park, all freeride. I recommend checking them out - I will be buying a second pair of Malamutes when these wear out.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

This has to be the most firm boot out there. No flex at all. Lacing system can make it fit like something more akin to a medical device than a snowboard boot. I was pleasantly surprised by how quality the construction is. Fits my Burton Cartel EST bindings nicely although I had to adjust the backs to the most vertical position. Souls are a bit firm compared to what I was used to (Burton Ion). Still they are perfectly comfortable and I think they were the right choice for the sort of all mountain, hard carving riding I like to do.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

I've only had one trip to the mountains with this boot but I am thoroughly happy with my purchase. Once you understand the procedure for lacing these boots it is very simple and quick. The diagonal liner strap really does helps to keep your heel locked in place. One comment from the helpful evo employee was that the most common complaint is that your foot goes numb, he said it's much easier to over tighten the laces on the inside than most boots, as long as you keep this in mind you're good to go!

On a performance side, this is the first stiff boot I've used. I was pleasantly surprised with how much more responsive my turns were. If you're on the fence of getting a stiff boot, I would highly recommend these as they are easily as comfortable as my previous 32 lashed boots, but with better performance.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

Breaking these in now, feels like a good choice, it was between these and other high end stiff boots and I still think I made the right decision for the money and overall. I am not a park fan, but like to board on the side slopes or hike out with full backcountry gear. I bought a half size smaller deliberately. Great stiff boot that can be adjusted easily between hiking preferences and slaying it in thick pow

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

This is the stiffest backcountry boot on the market, as far as I could tell. I tried on Burton driver x, Ride Insano Focus Boa, and these Salomon Malamutes were by far the best feel and fit for my feet. I seem to have a narrower foot, but i know that salomon also has boots to accommodate wide feet too. The quick pull lacing system felt like it cinched the boot better than the Burton system and the heel lock (Velcro strap from heel to top of boot liner) makes your heel feel really secure, which is a problem lots of narrower feet have in big boots. I usually wear a size 13 in shoes, but my boots are a size 12, which is perfect. If your looking for a stiff responsive boot for a normal to narrow foot, the malamute is great. I have friends who have worn malamutes for more than 8 seasons. Thats Salomon durability.

Comments about Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boots 2013:

I used my dad's 2012 Malamutes as my K2's packed in and I loved them so they bought me the 2013 Malamutes. These boots are great for speed, kickers, powder, and freeride.

My inner lace that latches to the top of the boot holding down your ankle broke within two weeks which was a bummer but Salomon has a great warranty system! (It was just a design flaw in that boot, my dad's which are now mine are great!)
