Product Info

Long the standard by which 100 millimeter all mountain class skis were judged, the Völkl Mantra Skis gained 2 mm in width and a bit more rocker last year, making them more versatile in softer conditions but still the bomb when the snow got hard. The ski was a huge success last season and it's back for 2016 with only topsheet changes. Chant the name over and over again until fall, and you'll be ready.

Product Details

Rocker Type

Full RockerVölkl Full Rocker is a smooth, gradual bend from tip to tail, with matching sidecut and a symmetrical flex pattern. All the benefits of extra maneuverability in soft snow while delivering smooth, sexy arcs on groomed terrain. The matching flex and sidecut on the full rocker gives you full, uninterrupted edge contact. The more the ski is on edge the more effective that edge becomes, and the resulting smoothness and predictability is uncanny.

Shape

Tapered Tip & Tail

Core

Multi Layer WoodcoreVölkl freeskiing models feature a multi-layer wood core that features two different densities of wood. In the binding attachment area, a dense, ash core is used, while in the rest of the ski, the core is poplar. The more dense wood creates more secure screw retention, preventing binding pull-out, and the soft, supple poplar section allows for resilience and snap. The flex pattern is tailored to each ski model, depending on the desired performance.

Laminates

Power ConstructionConstruction utilizes traditional vertical sidewalls and a torsion box internal layup. Used in racing skis as well as all the freeskiing models, this versatile, proven construction provides tremendous grip, stability, and a smooth ride.

Titanal Laminate LayerThere's nothing like a layer of metal to make a ski damp and stable at speed . . .

Sidewalls

Vertical Sidewalls

Binding Compatibility

We recommend a brake width equal to or at most 15 mm wider than the ski waist width.

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

I've loved my 2010 Mantra 170's for years. Incredibly fun in powder, yet carve almost like the old Volkl 6 stars - on rails. So I was concerned I'd lose some of that edge when getting the 2016 Mantra 170's. I was pleasantly surprised. In heavy powder on Vail's back bowls, I was no longer slightly concerned the tips would dive into mogles because of the skis stiffness. The new skis have better float, tips seem to stay up better without leaning back. So my balance point in heavy powder is now over the center of the skis. (Bindings are mounted over center point of ski also). They're also quicker to turn. to the point where my buddies told me they've never seen me ski so well. They also commented I looked equally as good in powder, crud and hardpacked. That was my experience. Going from different conditions within a few hours was all good. I can only bring one pair of skis from Florida, so I agree with the reviews that if you can only bring one pair of skis, these are the ones. I was very concerned about the new model, especially the new ski might slide around on hardpack. I knew it would give me more float - but hardpack concerns were unfounded. Volkl still has that magic edge thing going. Oh ya, because of the slight curve to the edges now, you can just turn your ankle digging the edge in on hardpack and the ski digs right in and comes around. Good if you want to get speed up on groomers if you like to break into that style for awhile. Oh ya, I'm 63 years old in great shape so I love to go aggressively all day on these things. Have fun! -

This ski is a smooth carving ski all over the hill, groomers and pow pow alike. Surprisingly stable at higher speeds. Let my amigo check them out on week two and he now has a pair.

    Mantra - timeless classic

    By

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

I use this as my everyday resort ski. If you like to charge down groomers and crud with some pow thrown in, this is your ski. Its tank-like construction is quite impressive. If you're looking for a light ski, look elsewhere, these things weigh a ton but that is why they shred through any resort snow. Also, for some very deep powder, you'd want some more milli underfoot. With these skis you'll have to shift your weight a bit to stay floating, but they do float!

I ride extremely aggressively and these shrug off the abuse. If you're building a quiver, these are a solid foundation.

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

I had to wait for a good snow day to evaluate my new Volkl Mantras and Marker Griffin bindings. My first day was on tracked up groomers following rain showers, not a good test bed for any skis. My second day was on much for favorable conditions, well groomed runs and substantial powder. The skis responded very well to the changing terrain and did everything I asked them to do. Good edges, fun cruisers and nice float - the exact reason I bought these skis. The Griffin binding worked very well and released when needed - an epic head plant in deep powder.

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

This is a fun ski to drive fast! It has great balance and grip on the groomed slopes and can handle big fast GS turns very well. The question is do you have the huevos to go that fast. It grips well in icy conditions. More difficult to turn in large bumps than a true mogul or narrower width ski because of width and length (184cm but I'm 6'6"). It floats amazing in powder and pushes through crud fairly well. However, you cannot relax with this ski. You must have good technique. If you lean backward at all it doesn't want to turn and it will accelerate but this allows you to haul booty!
Overall a great all mountain ski but you have to 'Drive' it or it will drive you.

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

I bought this as an all mountain ski. I wanted a resort ski I could ski through the powder on those days and then ski the crud in the afternoon after the crowds leave. It performs as advertised as an all mountain ski. a little bit too heavy for what i'm used to but it is still a fun ski to ride.

Comments about Volkl Mantra Skis 2016:

Man these are pretty good looking sticks. I had an old set of Mantras circa 2009 and I expect these babies to be much more fun. Still a stiff dual metal laminate design. It is July here in Colorado, so for now I get to look at these whenever I want. I hear they are sweet skis though, I got them to complement my squad 7 powder boards. Schlarp the giga gnars!
