Construction

Extended Double Grip Powered by Titanium, created using a unique Motion iPT interface allowing Volkl engineers to further develop their signature Double Grip construction. The added height extends from tip to tail, placing more material where it’s needed-in support of the edges. Extended Double Grip has the most consistent pressure distribution of any construction Volkl has ever created, offering more control, and better performance.

Bindings

iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings improves performance in three key ways: 1) The Wide Ride interface is 30% wider than the original iPT. It was developed specifically for skis 80mm and wider. 2) The toe and heel pieces for the Wide Ride system are the same design as those of the Marker Duke and Jester freeride bindings. The components contribute to better performance with a more secure wrap on the boot lug, and increased directional elasticity in the heel. 3) Lighter weight, shorter connection to the ski. Both the toe and heel components are extremely light, allowing the skier to have a very wide ski that is as easy to handle and maneuverable as a narrower system. This is also aided by the short overall length of the system.

Core and Flex Pattern

Extended Sensorwood core created in a complex CNC milling process. The highly sophisticated milling program enables Volkl to produce wood cores with extreme precision. They are “extended” upward and lengthwise, milled to form the chambers of the Extended Double Grip construction. The core consists of a blend of poplar and beech wood, and is found in Volkl’s highest performing models.

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

I am 6ft tall (got the 177s), weigh 195lbs and am a ski instructor.
These skis are definitely for experts. They require perfect balance, powerful legs, and good technique. If you have these attributes you will be rewarded. Perhaps the best ski I have ever skied on in 35 yrs on the snow. These are perfect for crud, powder and fast GS turns. Set an edge, apply some power and the skis rocket you through a turn. Amazing performance! You can feel the G Forces in the turns. They do take some getting used to due to the precise body position needed and the torsional stiffness. Once you get the hang of them...hold on for a terrific ride!
I would not recommend such a stiff ski for moguls or tight tree skiing. I think they are perfect for conditions around here (Vail, Copper Mountain etc), which give us lots of variable conditions.

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

I am a 42 year old tall agressive woman skier. I bought these skis in 170 to replace my worn out 166 Salomon TenEighty Foils.

I was looking for a more technical ski that was more stable at speed and had better grip on icy eastern conditions. After reading the other reviews I was a bit worried that I might regret going with the longer length and the more technical ski at the same time but so far so good.

I skied them for a week on early season conditions in Colorado and they did great on soft moguls, windpack and crud. Then I took them back east and found they can also handle icy moguls, frozen crud, glades and ice. The thicker ski under foot gives excellent edge grip. They are quick to turn when you ask them to and can definitely hold a nice big carved turn at speed as you would expect from Volkl.

The bindings are set a bit further back on the ski (tips are longer and tails shorter when compared other skis of the same size) which led me to think I would have to get up on the tips more, but infact they turn very quickly when you weight the ski under foot so for me they really don't take any additional effort or compensation.

They may not be pretty (although the simulated wood grain is cool), but they are a fun ski that performs great in tough conditions (and you can't beat the great price from Evo).

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

Fantastic Ski. They are handle, carve, and bit ice with authority. This ski seems to have many bests - you can relax with some large carving turns and then switch it up to tight slalom turns without a hitch. They adapt to ski conditions very well. As having a non-existent snowfall in the Northeast for the 11-12 ski season, these skis have been experiencing a lot of machine crud, corduroy, and ice all mixed in the daily outings. I've skied them 4 days so far and they are an amazing ski. I researched them thoroughly before purchasing and everyone seemed to agree that this ski was the one to get which had proved spot on. It's worth a look into this fantastic package.

Just got these AC50s and only been on them once - granular packed groomed (what else is there in VT in feb 2011) - excellent day - very responsive, good edge even in crusty material - plowed through some soft stuff in the afternoon - no regrets with this purchase - can't wait to get on them again. Bought on a 2 day evo promo - best deal I ever got on a new ski

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

Just like driving a high performance German sports car; riding on rails. These skis handle incredibly well in Eastern Hardpack aka ICE. I would encourage any Advanced+ East Coast skier to take these out for a test drive. While they are a heavier ski, they still handle well in the bumps and navigating through tight glades. The WideRide bindings are very nice and provide great control, getting you closer to the edge. I am 5' 11", 180lbs and bought the 170s. The review by the guy from NH that skis Outer Limits was right on; you don't need the extra length.

            THANKS!

This is a great all-mountain ski. A true weapon, powering through pretty much everything you can throw at it. Superb in tight turns, great hold on ice, hardpack. Powers through crud. Not very forgiving, but rewards good balance and technique with great, fast, secure handling. No speed limit. Way more stable than Tornados (which I also love) at speed. A tank, makes you feel invincible. Only gripe is the flimsy Marker AFDs, had to replace them after just a few rides, love the rest of the binding - Marker Wideride really works well on this ski to transfer your turning power. Best skis I have ever owned.

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

Rule 1: Hold on and know what you want to do and how to do it. With that said these skis will do anything you want to do. I now own two pairs of these and am ready to buy another. I have no interest in generic named "initial" skis and expect Volkl will come back to this model within two years. I ran warm up runs with these skis and when I ran my all out race prepped race skis...the AC50 clocked in a full second quicker! These seem to be the completely wrong ski for moguls but I find myself spending entire days in steep mogul fields and these are the only ski that keeps my out of trouble becasue they respond to every twitch of input I give them. Trees with powder are sweet. I am 5' 10" at 180lbs and ski the 170 version. This is a bit shorter than what I see others using and perhaps this is why they respond so quickly for me. My first demo was three seasons ago at Copper Mountain where I skied powder and trees in Spaulding Bowl, moguls under the Sierra lift, and skied my all time best handicap on the NASTAR course. Two days later I bought my first pair. My last use during the 2010-2011 ski season was a cold spring day at Cannon Mountain. The corn never softened so I thought I would recreate the days of my youth by skiing solid ice. Except for being a noisy ride I was still able to hit all my turns with ease leaving me with a smile so huge I almost started laughing out loud. Don't buy these if you are looking to relax and take your time sight seeing. They will work fine but you will either be very bored or end up injured depending on your skills.
I wish the edges were a bit wider so they could withstand a few more shop tune-ups but my first pair are still usable.
If you demo a pair and they seem to have a mind of their own you should make sure your boots are fitting correctly and make sure there are no burrs on the edges.
                    Rule #2: See Rule #1
Thank you Volkl for this great ski!

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

I have been looking for a high performance ski that is suited for varied East Coast conditions and I have finally found it in the Volckl AC50. This ski is perfect for the ice, steeps, woods, and rocks of Northern Vermont. The ski is quick edge to edge, carves on ice like it is on rails, and is versatile enough to ski bumps all day without the fatigue normally caused by a stiff ski.

If you are an agressive skier who will ask this ski to bend, it will deliver the whip across the fall line and accelleration into the next turn that will put a smile on your face! The AC 50 Unlimited has great grip and stability. It cuts through crud without a chatter. The sidecut and wide shovel allows the strong skier to indulge in the deep powder or the groomers with equally good results. I am 6'2" 185 lbs, ski the 184 cm model and have never had a ski that can do as much so well. After riding demos for several years, this ski got my attention and I now own a pair. Nothing but good vibes from these unselfish toys!
