Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011: For freshies and groomers alike: kill it on the mountain with this ripping ski that can handle super-soft to hyper-hard conditions and transition between them with ease. Everyone will envy you with the Volkl AC50 Ski + iPT Wide Ride 14.0 Binding package, featuring an Extended Sensorwood core, and Extended Double Grip Powered by Titanium – a one-two punch that gives this ski unprecedented control and precision.
Shape
Camber
Construction
Extended Double Grip Powered by Titanium, created using a unique Motion iPT interface allowing Volkl engineers to further develop their signature Double Grip construction. The added height extends from tip to tail, placing more material where it’s needed-in support of the edges. Extended Double Grip has the most consistent pressure distribution of any construction Volkl has ever created, offering more control, and better performance.
Bindings
iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings improves performance in three key ways: 1) The Wide Ride interface is 30% wider than the original iPT. It was developed specifically for skis 80mm and wider. 2) The toe and heel pieces for the Wide Ride system are the same design as those of the Marker Duke and Jester freeride bindings. The components contribute to better performance with a more secure wrap on the boot lug, and increased directional elasticity in the heel. 3) Lighter weight, shorter connection to the ski. Both the toe and heel components are extremely light, allowing the skier to have a very wide ski that is as easy to handle and maneuverable as a narrower system. This is also aided by the short overall length of the system.
Core and Flex Pattern
Extended Sensorwood core created in a complex CNC milling process. The highly sophisticated milling program enables Volkl to produce wood cores with extreme precision. They are “extended” upward and lengthwise, milled to form the chambers of the Extended Double Grip construction. The core consists of a blend of poplar and beech wood, and is found in Volkl’s highest performing models.

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

I am 6ft tall (got the 177s), weigh 195lbs and am a ski instructor.
These skis are definitely for experts. They require perfect balance, powerful legs, and good technique. If you have these attributes you will be rewarded. Perhaps the best ski I have ever skied on in 35 yrs on the snow. These are perfect for crud, powder and fast GS turns. Set an edge, apply some power and the skis rocket you through a turn. Amazing performance! You can feel the G Forces in the turns. They do take some getting used to due to the precise body position needed and the torsional stiffness. Once you get the hang of them...hold on for a terrific ride!
I would not recommend such a stiff ski for moguls or tight tree skiing. I think they are perfect for conditions around here (Vail, Copper Mountain etc), which give us lots of variable conditions.

Took these out for the first time over the weekend at Windham in NY! Not a lot of snow but these boards worked great on the manmade stuff as well as the ice underfoot. Very happy!

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

I am a 42 year old tall agressive woman skier. I bought these skis in 170 to replace my worn out 166 Salomon TenEighty Foils.

I was looking for a more technical ski that was more stable at speed and had better grip on icy eastern conditions. After reading the other reviews I was a bit worried that I might regret going with the longer length and the more technical ski at the same time but so far so good.

I skied them for a week on early season conditions in Colorado and they did great on soft moguls, windpack and crud. Then I took them back east and found they can also handle icy moguls, frozen crud, glades and ice. The thicker ski under foot gives excellent edge grip. They are quick to turn when you ask them to and can definitely hold a nice big carved turn at speed as you would expect from Volkl.

The bindings are set a bit further back on the ski (tips are longer and tails shorter when compared other skis of the same size) which led me to think I would have to get up on the tips more, but infact they turn very quickly when you weight the ski under foot so for me they really don't take any additional effort or compensation.

They may not be pretty (although the simulated wood grain is cool), but they are a fun ski that performs great in tough conditions (and you can't beat the great price from Evo).

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

Fantastic Ski. They are handle, carve, and bit ice with authority. This ski seems to have many bests - you can relax with some large carving turns and then switch it up to tight slalom turns without a hitch. They adapt to ski conditions very well. As having a non-existent snowfall in the Northeast for the 11-12 ski season, these skis have been experiencing a lot of machine crud, corduroy, and ice all mixed in the daily outings. I've skied them 4 days so far and they are an amazing ski. I researched them thoroughly before purchasing and everyone seemed to agree that this ski was the one to get which had proved spot on. It's worth a look into this fantastic package.

Just got these AC50s and only been on them once - granular packed groomed (what else is there in VT in feb 2011) - excellent day - very responsive, good edge even in crusty material - plowed through some soft stuff in the afternoon - no regrets with this purchase - can't wait to get on them again. Bought on a 2 day evo promo - best deal I ever got on a new ski

Comments about Volkl AC50 Skis + iPT Wide Ride 12.0 Bindings 2011:

Just like driving a high performance German sports car; riding on rails. These skis handle incredibly well in Eastern Hardpack aka ICE. I would encourage any Advanced+ East Coast skier to take these out for a test drive. While they are a heavier ski, they still handle well in the bumps and navigating through tight glades. The WideRide bindings are very nice and provide great control, getting you closer to the edge. I am 5' 11", 180lbs and bought the 170s. The review by the guy from NH that skis Outer Limits was right on; you don't need the extra length.

            THANKS!
