Surface New Life Skis 2012 : One of the defining qualities of the Surface New Life Skis are the rocker pattern. A subtle 3 Stage Rocker and flat ski in between is truly revolutionary. The New Life was designed for the skier who rides any terrain imaginable. With fully symmetrical shape, progressive rocker design and still flex, the New Life is super floaty in powder but still fairly stable at speed. The New Life is the most progressive and best selling ski in Surface’s Life series and with 2 additional lengths this season, there’s no reason you can’t experience some “new” in YOUR life.
Shape
Features Surface’s signature subtle (6 degree) 3 Stage Rocker provides ample float in the deep with minimal effort while allowing for some amazing pop. Surprisingly, this shape doesn't sacrifice performance when conditions get a bit more firm.
A Symmetrical shape means the tip and tail dimensions and rocker profile are the exact same on both ends for a true twin shaping that shines in all conditions. The true twin shape adds versatility for riding backwards all over the hill.
Construction
ABS Sidewall construction
2mm Mini-Cap
2.5mm Full Wrap Edge protection
Extruded Base
Binding Reinforcement sheets
Flex
Poplar wood
Binding Compatibility
We recommend a brake width that is equal to the ski waist width and at most 15 mm wider.

Specs

  • Terrain: Powder
    Powder
These skis are for the deep days. If you like to find powder stashes at your local resort, go on backcountry missions for the freshest of fresh or heli ski trips to BC, powder skis are what you need to stay afloat. Skis in the powder category are wide and most often have some form of rocker or early rise plus a relatively soft flex. Many powder skis today are versatile enough to handle mixed conditions and harder snow.
  • Ability Level: Advanced-Expert
    Advanced-Expert
Whether you charge the steepest lines, carve with race-like precision, hit the biggest jumps or halfpipes; advanced to expert level skis/snowboards are for the more aggressive rider. You will often find the addition of layers of metal, carbon, bamboo, or other stringers in these. These features work to make a stiffer ski/snowboard with more power and rebound.
  • Rocker Type: Rocker/Flat/Rocker
    Rocker/Flat/Rocker
Rocker/Flat/Rocker is a variation on the rocker theme that seeks to provide a little more hard snow edgehold and pop than full rocker while retaining ease of turning and float. Performance is between a fully rockered ski and a rocker/camber/rocker ski.
  • Core/Laminates: Wood
  • Tail Type: Full Twin Tip
    Full Twin Tip
Desinged to allow you to ski backwards, full twin tips are found primarily on park & pipe skis and freestyle powder skis. More and more, we are seeing twin tips on all-mountain skis of all abilities, as it makes it a little easier to get around, and for the most part does not inhibit forward skiing.

    New Life Review

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

The New Life is a bit stiffer than some of the other fat twin tips out there. The reasoning for Surface's choice was apparent when standing on top of line and questioning what the landing would feel like. Not certain if my personal skis would have skied away from it but the New Lifes did. A lot of other skis that provide this stability are more directional. Cheers to Surface for making something I can ski with a freestyle mentality and still hold up to charging bigger lines with confidence.

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

Awesome ski! I am currently riding the 184 New Life. Trying out the 194 was bigger than I really needed. It was totally manageable but a little long for tight places. The New Life in general is super jibby. Love the stiffness of it and how it mashes through chunder. BUY IT!

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

The Surface New Life's are probably the best ski that I've ever owned! The subtle 3 Stage Rocker is shear genius and gives the ski great versatility. I skied this ski everyday last season in all conditions, from groomers, to chunder, to deep pow and everything in between, I found that this ski preformed great. Also, this ski is extremely fun in the air and is super playful. The symmetrical rocker and shape is great for landing switch, buttering, and throwing all kinds of tricks that would make your grandma proud! Overall this is an awesome ski and I am extremely happy with it. I would definitely recommend mounting bindings dead center...

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

The rocker profile is awesome; it keeps me flaoting in the deep stuff, yet I was able to carve switch on corduroy. I also love the Stable flex because I can charge on any type of snow and it will support me.

      Surface New Life

      By Sam D

      from Stevens Pass

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

I am 6'1 and 185lbs, I took the 194s on a couple of runs on groomed, a run on some steeps w/ cliffs and pow. They are a very stable, powerful ski. The rocker helped turn them quicker and prevent tip dives. Not good for park spins due to the high swing weight. Skis like speed. Great carve when I leaned them over in chunder going fast riding out of a drop.

Comments about Surface New Life Skis 2012:

First the not so good: as some have mentioned, the top sheet is not very durable (at all). I have skied on these for only a few days, and they look as if they are a season old already - lots of nicks and even a few chips and deep cuts along the edges.
Otherwise, these skis are just great. A nice wide twin-tip, and with the flat and rocker combo giving a very forgiving ski, and of course it's also great in powder. Chatter is very minimal compared to similar type skis. They are also very light for their size and width.
I'm 5'10" 180 lbs. and I have the 184cm length. Keep in mind that the rocker decreases the effective edge length. This length is perfect for all around mountain. If I could, I would get the 194s for backcountry and the 174s for park (but then again, these are a bit wide for a true park ski)
Overall, a good all around ski, great for everything from carving to pow to rails.

Teaching and all around riding. They're extremely lite for being such a wide ski and are really buttery if you ever wanted spin off something. I haven't really found anything bad about them, they're awesome!!
