Surface Live Free Skis 2012: Dawn patrol in the Wasatch Mountains is a pretty special thing. Looking down from Mt. Superior onto the town of Alta while all the little ants scramble to find parking and knowing that your day will be done before theirs even begins is extremely satisfying. But what tops all that is being white roomed at 8:03am and having time to grab a coffee before work begins at 9:00. If this appeals, the Surface Life Free Skis may be your new best friend. The Live Free is a hybrid camber ski and super light for a ski with a 110+ waist - a perfect companion for a pair of AT bindings and a reliable alarm clock!
Shape
Early Rise Hybrid technology makes for an extremely smooth turn initiation and exit, along with keeping the tip of those boards on top of the deepest snow. The Hybrid Camber underfoot allows for that edge hold when snow tends to firm up or when terrain gets steeper and you need that extra bite.
Directional tapered shape
Construction
Hybrid feather weight construction
ABS Sidewall construction

2.5mm Full Wrap Edge protection
Extruded Base

Specs

  • Terrain: Powder
    Powder
These skis are for the deep days. If you like to find powder stashes at your local resort, go on backcountry missions for the freshest of fresh or heli ski trips to BC, powder skis are what you need to stay afloat. Skis in the powder category are wide and most often have some form of rocker or early rise plus a relatively soft flex. Many powder skis today are versatile enough to handle mixed conditions and harder snow.
  • Ability Level: Advanced-Expert
    Advanced-Expert
Whether you charge the steepest lines, carve with race-like precision, hit the biggest jumps or halfpipes; advanced to expert level skis/snowboards are for the more aggressive rider. You will often find the addition of layers of metal, carbon, bamboo, or other stringers in these. These features work to make a stiffer ski/snowboard with more power and rebound.
  • Rocker Type: Rocker/Camber/Rocker
    Rocker/Camber/Rocker
Rocker/Camber/Rocker skis have the playfulness and float of a rockered ski as will as the added edge hold of a cambered ski. The contact points on skis with this profile are closer towards the middle of the ski than a fully cambered ski, but still not underfoot. The cambered midsection provides a longer effective edge on hardpack, increasing edge hold and stability, while the rockered tip and tail provide floatation in deeper snow and allow the ski to initiate and release from turns easier.
  • Turning Radius: 22.0m @ 181cm // 26.2m @ 191cm
  • Core/Laminates: Wood
  • Tail Type: Full Twin Tip
    Full Twin Tip
Desinged to allow you to ski backwards, full twin tips are found primarily on park & pipe skis and freestyle powder skis. More and more, we are seeing twin tips on all-mountain skis of all abilities, as it makes it a little easier to get around, and for the most part does not inhibit forward skiing.

Comments about Surface Live Free Skis 2012:

Customer service is very poor. Had these skis for less than a month in CO. Looked down taking them off at the end of the day to see a delam and bend on one ski. Waste of money sending them in to surface as they wouldn't stand behind it for anything. Offered 60% off a new pair but who wants a ski that breaks after a month. Don't waste your time or money dealing with these amateurs.

Comments about Surface Live Free Skis 2012:

I have these in 191 (I'm 5'8") mounted at recommended with MFDs and they've served me well as a 1-ski quiver. Most of the ski has traditional camber underneath (lots), so it grips well when skinning and carves well on all-mountain chunder. There's also a subtle early rise in the tail, and a fat early rise in the tip, meaning they float like a genuine pow ski. I can't count how many times I've landed frontseat in powder only to have my tips boat up and catch me.

This ski is my go-to for backcountry missions. The Live Free charges like a GS ski when sending it down AK lines, but still floats like a boat once you hit the pillows down in the trees. Basically, it's the cat's pajamas.
