K2 SideStash Skis 2012: Do you spend the morning enjoying your favorite inbounds stashes and the afternoon heading out the backcountry gates to get the week-old pow? K2 has the weapon of choice for you with the K2 Sidestash Skis. All-Terrain Rocker™ with a new longer rise provide this ski with more flotation and predictability for wide open slopes and nimbleness for charging tighter chutes. With the metal laminate the K2 Sidestash Skis have a powerful construction that is smooth, damp, and stable for tackling crud, ice, and chunder of all sorts. There is nowhere this ski does not feel confident.
Shape
All-Terrain Rocker™ is designed for all snow conditions, featuring an elevated tip for variable and soft snow performance with camber underfoot for power, energy, and edge-hold in firmer conditions.
Progressive Sidecut is a combination of two different radii that enhances the versatility of wider-waist skis. This guarantees improved turn initiation and hard-snow performance.

Construction
Hybritech Sidewalls are a unique blend of sidewall and cap constructions that combine the accuracy, power, and performance of sidewall underfoot with the lightweight characteristics and smooth turn initiation of cap construction.
Powder Tip tapers early to avoid hooking.
Tip/Tail Hardware - removable plugs reveal holes that can be used to attach K2 Pre-Cut Skins or build a rescue sled
Flex
Aspen and Paulownia core: Aspen is solid and dense; Paulownia is an eco-friendly, fast-growing renewable wood that is incredibly strong and lightweight.
Metal TNC Laminate consists of 2 sheets of lightweight Titanal running the length of the ski. Alternating layers of fiberglass and Titanal sandwich the wood core to provide dampened, accurate, and unshakable performance.
Binding Compatibility
We recommend a brake width that is equal to the ski waist width and at most 15 mm wider.

Specs

  • Terrain: All-Mountain, Alpine Touring, Powder
    All-Mountain
All-mountain skis are designed to handle anything you throw at them including powder, ice, groomers, steeps, heavy snow, and everything in between, but they aren’t necessarily a master of any one terrain. If you’re only going to own one ski to do it all, this is what you want. All-mountain skis generally have what we call mid-fat waists that range from 80-110 mm.
    Alpine Touring
Also known as backcountry skis, alpine touring (AT) skis are designed for going uphill as well as downhill. These skis are typically light for their width and many feature fittings that accept climbing skins. AT skis vary in width and weight, with the wider heavier versions usually used for winter/deep snow touring and the skinnier, lighter skis usually used for spring/summer/long distance touring.
    Powder
These skis are for the deep days. If you like to find powder stashes at your local resort, go on backcountry missions for the freshest of fresh or heli ski trips to BC, powder skis are what you need to stay afloat. Skis in the powder category are wide and most often have some form of rocker or early rise plus a relatively soft flex. Many powder skis today are versatile enough to handle mixed conditions and harder snow.
  • Ability Level: Advanced-Expert
    Advanced-Expert
Whether you charge the steepest lines, carve with race-like precision, hit the biggest jumps or halfpipes; advanced to expert level skis/snowboards are for the more aggressive rider. You will often find the addition of layers of metal, carbon, bamboo, or other stringers in these. These features work to make a stiffer ski/snowboard with more power and rebound.
  • Rocker Type: Rocker/Camber
    Rocker/Camber
Rocker/Camber skis pair a traditional cambered profile underfoot with an elongated, early rise tip borrowed from fully rockered skis. This profile places the front contact point further back from the tip, while the rear contact point remains close to the tail. The rockered tip allows for better flotation and less edge catch for increased float in deep snow, while the cambered rear stores and transmits energy similarly to a fully cambered ski.
  • Turning Radius: Long
    Long
    > 22 m radius is best for powder and big-mountain.
  • Core/Laminates: Wood
  • Tail Type: Flat
    Flat
This is your traditional tail, designed to have edge contact all the way through the tail, and only designed for skiing forward. This is also preferred for alpine touring, as you can stick the tails of your skis in the snow.

    Fast, Stable and Light

    By Peter

Comments about K2 SideStash Skis 2012:

Fast, stable and light. Rocker kept you up over the powder and KILLED it on wet, variable snow, even going fast. Held a real solid line doing big turns down groomers with minimal chatter. In tighter chutes and trees where the Obsethed would spin on a dime the SideStash was light enough and solid enough to do jump turns for days. Also nice and poppy.

    The SideStash Rocks

Comments about K2 SideStash Skis 2012:

Today's conditions: 6" of heavy crud. The SideStash just tore it up. Very powerful yet nimble. Couldn't want anything more from a ski. Ideal for the PNW sidecountry.

    Super Stable Ski

    By Rustin

    from Stevens Pass

Comments about K2 SideStash Skis 2012:

Super stable ski. The tip rocker is more than enough to blast through the crud but doesn't feel noodley. Tail makes for stable turns and a predictable ride. They are easy to put on edge and rail. Perfect all around ski.

Comments about K2 SideStash Skis 2012:

Took 181cm demo on Whistler Heli day and did 35,000+ verticle on partially consolidated snow (8-12" soft on firm base). Great combination of extremely lively camber and front rocker that was outstanding on steeps and handled heavier/crust snow very smoothly. Stomp on the tails at the end of a turn and you will be airborn into the next. Just enough rocker to make them really smooth and easy to initiate turns regardless of snow conditions. We took a few very steep (approaching 50 degrees) pitches and these were the best skis I have ever had for steeps; smooth into the turn and tons of 'pop' out of the turns. I literally went directly to the ski store and purchased a pair with touring bindings when I got down.

I use for touring, and powder skiing. Great control in the powder, but not great control on the groomers, the tips begin to vibrate at speed.

I bought this ski for myself and liked it so much I bought a pair for my husband as a gift. It is great in the powder, but I am using it as my everyday ski as well. It tends to ski a little long (I went one length down).
