K2 Shuksan Skis 2012

The K2 Shuksan Skis are built for pre-dawn skins up their namesake peak, but with K2's trusty Mod construction and a metal laminate, these touring-oriented sticks won't give out on you halfway down the ridge. K2 designed the Shuksan for hut trips and ski mountaineering and employed technology from the rest of their line so that you will still enjoy the descent.

Specs

  • Terrain: Alpine Touring
    Alpine Touring
Also known as backcountry skis, alpine touring (AT) skis are designed for going uphill as well as downhill. These skis are typically light for their width and many feature fittings that accept climbing skins. AT skis vary in width and weight, with the wider heavier versions usually used for winter/deep snow touring and the skinnier, lighter skis usually used for spring/summer/long distance touring.
  • Ability Level: Advanced-Expert
    Advanced-Expert
Whether you charge the steepest lines, carve with race-like precision, hit the biggest jumps or halfpipes; advanced to expert level skis/snowboards are for the more aggressive rider. You will often find the addition of layers of metal, carbon, bamboo, or other stringers in these. These features work to make a stiffer ski/snowboard with more power and rebound.
  • Rocker Type: Camber
    Camber
Camber is the traditional profile for skis offering skiers lots of edge hold, especially on harder snow. A cambered ski has a smooth arch underfoot and contact points near the tip and tail when unweighted. Camber skis excel at carving on hard snow; you won’t ever see a ski racer on anything other than cambered skis.
  • Turning Radius: Medium
    Medium
17-22 m radius is best for all-mountain and park & pipe.
  • Tail Type: Flat
    Flat
This is your traditional tail, designed to have edge contact all the way through the tail, and only designed for skiing forward. This is also preferred for alpine touring, as you can stick the tails of your skis in the snow.
  • Warranty: 1 Year

Great Tele ski, mounted them with some hammerheads, great in bumps and trees on the east coast, float well enough in fluff for a narrower ski. Very stable ripping big GS turns on hard pack too.

This is my fourth pair and each time they seem to get better for the back country. I also use them for inbounds ski instruction so they take a beating both on the bottoms from the back country and the tops from the little people skiing over them.

Comments about K2 Shuksan Skis 2012:

I will use this ski for my alpine touring adventures, since this is what it is designed for. Have only had the opportunity to ski it once so far, and in-bounds. Junk was, per the regular ski folks, awful. I had a great time as the ski handled everything with relative ease. I tried to give it a good hard trench-cutting carve on the groom and no go. The ski went flopped out at tip and tail so then went straight. Mild to fairly hard carving is easily achieved. I look forward to giving these a go after a bit of a hike.

Used for longer backcountry tours. Best suited for skiers who can ski anything and do not want to lug fat skis around. Sort of old school.

Comments about K2 Shuksan Skis 2012:

I'm new to telemarking so I'm not an expert on equipment, but I really like these skis. I got them for Eastern hardpack, and they're working out well. At 181 cm and traditional camber I didn't expect these to be especially nimble, but I find them quite nimble enough. I've used them for lift-serve and day tours, and they've become my go-to ski.

I wanted a ski that is specific for eastern machine made hard pack with a narrow waist that would hold, carve and handle cruising speed for telemark skiing. Light weight and stable. This is the one to add to the quiver.
