Product Info

K2 BackUp Skis 2012: Do you prefer rustic hut-to-hut tours; skinning into the high alpine with only your camping gear and a week’s worth of freeze-dried food; seeing no civilization and talking to no one except the companion you set out with? The K2 BackUp Skis are full on backcountry ski mountaineering tools. Metal laminate and a narrower waist width provide phenomenal edge hold and feel for such an ultra-light ski, great for descending refrozen sun-baked slopes. At the same time, the BackUp has Speed Rocker™ and is wide enough to handle variable snow conditions of all kinds making it versatile enough to double as a resort/ telemark ski.

Product Details

Shape

Progressive Sidecut is a combination of two different radii that enhances the versatility of wider-waist skis. This guarantees improved turn initiation and hard-snow performance.

Rocker Type

Speed Rocker™Designed for high performance precision and agility on firm snow. The slightly elevated tip and increased tip length provide effortless initiation and improved skinning ascent, while camber along the rest of the running surface delivers precision, power, and edge-hold.

Construction

Cap Construction is durable, lightweight, and softer, built by a sophisticated molding process that envelopes the core and internal materials with the top layer of the ski.

Tip/Tail Hardware - removable plugs reveal holes that can be used to attach K2 Pre-Cut Skins or build a rescue sled

SnoPhobic tops keeps the ski light with a snow-repellent topsheet

Flex

Paulownia core: Paulownia is an eco-friendly, fast-growing renewable wood that is incredibly strong and lightweight.

Metal TNC Laminate consists of 2 sheets of lightweight Titanal running the length of the ski. Alternating layers of fiberglass and Titanal sandwich the wood core to provide dampened, accurate, and unshakable performance.

Binding Compatibility

We recommend a brake width that is equal to the ski waist width and at most 15 mm wider.

Comments about K2 Backup Skis 2013:

Got to tele on these bad boys during a dealer demo day at Jay Peak last year. I was the only telemark skier to show up, so I got to keep them out all day!

Conditions were late season hardpack, with mashed potatoes in a few spots later in the day.

Being someone who prefers a more traditional camber, I was a little unsure about the "Speed Rocker" at first... but I soon proved myself wrong.
These skis cut through the crud all day long. Super edgy and responsive, even on the slickest, fastest runs. I found myself wanting to push them harder and harder... which actually tired me out by the end of the day! Forgiving enough for a beginnner, but they certainly hold their own for the more advanced skier.
The only drawback I've found is that they are a bit heavier than my G3 Barons, though still fairly light. I just placed an order for the 167 length. I plan on making these my full-time resort ski, whilst moving the Barons to backcountry-only duty.

Bought these to do it all - mostly resort skiing with some back country mixed in. Not an an amazing skier, but these handle everything I'll throw at them with ease. Light enough for touring, confident enough for some high speed runs down the groomers.

Outfitted with Atomic Tracker 16s for AT and purchased pre-cut skins (big plus). +++DEAL at EVO

Skis are everything I expected. True east-coast all arounder, if I was a one quiver man these would be the one. Extremely versatile... not necessarily the best in any given conditions but very good in all conditions. In deep powder I slightly prefer my Atomic Aspects, which are a similar cut. However I give these the nod everywhere else. Very fast, stable carving, powerful, snappy, and good looking. Float well, lightweight, quick edge to edge. A premier ski in it's class. Would not hesitate to take on big mountain tours in the deep stuff either.

Comments about K2 Backup Skis 2013:

This is the 2nd pair of K2 Backup skis I have purchased. This pair is shorter than my previous pair and will be used at the resort when I teach. The Backup is a light, versitile ski for telemarking and with 82mm under foot, cuts thru the crud and other frontside issues. I have 22 Designs Vice bindings and Scarpa T1 boots to power the skis - I would recommend the Backup to anyone looking for a light weight, skin ready telemark ski.

My friend picked them out. Christmas gift from me to him. He did all the research. I found out what they cost when they showed up at the house with an MSRP sticker of $690. EVO price was under $170. My friend was shocked.

They haven't been risen yet. But with that price they get the 5 Star rating!

              Thanks EVO!

I just started skiing last year, and decided to get a touring setup this year. I don't know much about skis, but after some research, I came across the K2's, and found them really cheap on Evo. So far I've just skinned up the resort twice, but they've been stable on the ride down, and light on the way up. I'm not an expert, but I'm happy with these skis.

Comments about K2 Backup Skis 2013:

These skis did what the said they would. I only have one day on them but I was impressed with what I found. They handled the speed on the steeps, plowed through the broken crust off-piste and floated through the soft stuff when i could find it. My only concern was the Chudder on boilerplate steeps. No amount of driving the tips would keep them grabbing on the hard steep stuff in the shade. Growing up on the east coast it wasn't ice, they handled that as I expected. I think it was the weight of the skis that made it difficult. The 2 sheets of metal did their best, they wanted to hold. Just too much speed and vibration to overcome. It's well worth the trade off when going up hill. I added tour 12's and ride Garmont Deleriums so I don't really care about the weight for a side-country rig. If I'm touring I grab my Tele gear, and I'm thinking of putting threaded inserts in so I can swap bindings and ride them both ways. They are that much fun.

                      Service and delivery comments:

                      Service was Awesome.
I needed special consideratioin to get these to my destination. Never was there anyquestion of EVO's ability to deliver.
They answered my emails quickly and accurately.

Since my delivery was through the USPS I couldn't get the tracking info but that's not their fault. The skis arrived in perfect shape way before I thought they would get here.

I uses these skis on everything from powder to ice. For a light weight ski they do pretty good. I'd like to see K2 add more skis with the metal/light weight wood core to their backside line.

Comments about K2 Backup Skis 2013:

Note: I am a telemarker, so all comments come from that background.

                        Turning
These are moderately wide, but don't sacrifice any sidecut for this. They still have a 41 mm sidecut, the same as many all-mountain skis. So you can still turn without a problem, and the edges hold well on ice. This isn't to say you should try to crank turns like a racer, but they wont fail on you on a slippery day. They aren't particularly stiff, a plus for those of us whose heels leave the ski; but you won't find yourself skiing noodles either.

                        Rocker
I should preface this by saying that I've tried rockered skis, and I did not like them on groomed terrain, despite the hype of late. That being said, it is not noticeable in the slightest on these. They behaved like most un-rockered skis that I have used and there isn't a noticeable bend when looking at them. The rocker is entirely in the tip, and there is still camber under-foot, so on groomed terrain they ski like a traditional ski but the rocker helps when you get into softer snow.

                        Weight
These are one of the lightest sets of telemark skis I have ever had. If you are in the backcountry, you are certainly going to appreciate it.

                        Durability:
While it was a rocky year for skiing, these do not seem to hold up as well as others. They are not constantly breaking on you, but they are not the stoutest of skis. I have also been noticing, for the first time chips coming out of the top of my skis. This isn't any real damage, and could also be a result of the inordinate amount of rocks, but it is frustrating.

                        Summary
In all I love these skis. They are a very reliable do-it-all ski, that ski well on groomed terrain or ice, but are light and fat enough for the backcountry. My biggest fear is when I need to replace them in a couple of years, I won't be able to get anything like this any more because the 'rocker revolution' is going to take over.

With my 5 & 8 year old children I as looking for a ski that would perform well at a downhill ski area great for Alpine touring. This ski has nailed it. Love how they float in the powder. On hard packed days they pop unbelievably hard out of both long and short carves. Skinning back to the top is a joy with the K2 Backup 181.

I was little worried about how these puppies would work in bounds and they really surpised me. Really light and responsive in the powder and on groomed. I am very happy with these bad boys and how they are adapted for my touring set up.

Great one quiver ski. I used to patrol for one season. Overall they handle well and turn quick. Good in the moguls. Handles eastern powder (aka ice) moderately well. The primary con I found was some chatter at speeds.

I have these skis mounted with Rottefella Freedom telemark bindings. Compared to my wider waisted skis, they don't feel as stable or float as well, but I love their light weight feel, especially on backcountry adventures. At resorts, they are very quick edge to edge for fast tele turn transitions. They have a surgical, precise feel when it comes to edging. The big sidecut makes them easy to turn and the widish tip allow them to float pretty well in powder.

Good pair of begininer skis. Not too worried about screwing them up when the snow thins out. Good to get you up the mountain and a mellow ride down. Better than walking down hill.

These hold almost as well on ice as the narrow skis I own and better than the other mid fats. They bust through crud better than the narrows and make a better quiver of one than the other 2.

Primarily resort skiing in Pennsylvania. Floats nice in spring corn. Has worked well for all of the conditionis that I have encountered so far. No big powder days yet, so I can't comment on that. Nice and light. My new favorite ski. These were blems (some misalignment of graphicst that do not effect performance). Overall I am thrilled that I have these. They are my go to skis these days.

Light weight touring skis that perform nicely as all-mountain/all-condition skis. A good choice if you only want to buy one pair of skis or need to decide which pair to take on a cross-country trip.

These skis are very light and responsive, great for skinning up to that bowl full of powder.

Use mainly with climbing skins. Nice and light going up but could have more power on the way back down.

Very similar to the Mt Baker except it comes around quicker with Speed Rocker tip. Hooks up and holds an edge . Ski can really be driven through the turn. I recommend it highly

Got these for my tele setup, and for the price they have been excellent! Could be lighter for touring, but on the downhill side thy function perfectly.

Very nice tourer. Turns great in tight spaces - really shines in trees and moguls. Too soft to carve big downhill turns. With this flex, I might have preferred a wider waist for more float.
