I am 6'2" and 195 lbs. and have skied the Coomba in the 181 cm length (really a 184 cm ski per K2's unique measurement system) on hard pack, chopped snow and powder. This ski has surprisingly good edge grip on hard snow. The Coomba is light and easy to turn for such a big ski with a large radius, and it will certainly float in deep snow. The ski's medium soft flex even worked well for me in moguls. For those off-piste skiers who don't require a twin tip, the Coomba is a lot of fun to ski and works as an allmountain ski for the Pacific Northwest. The first production runs are labeled with slightly wrong dimensions: 133-102-114. This is my only gripe, K2 has corrected this error on the subsequent production runs.

Im skiing the non rockered version of the Coomba. The length is 174, and they are mounted with 22 Designs AXL Bindings. The combination of the skis and bindings is perfect for backcountry touring, both light weight and efficient. They float through powder and turn with ease. The only downfall i've experienced is difficulty controlling them at high speeds on hardpack when returning to in bound runs.

Comments about K2 Apache Coomba Skis 2009:

My, my, my, I got these for powder days but used them for the last two weekends in soft, deep, slush (Mammoth with temps in the 60s). They were absolutely fantastic. Before strapping them on, I was riding all terrain Salomons (great ski, BTW) but there is no comparison - The Apachees are hands down better in spring conditions. If May at Mammoth is your type of skiing - go for these skis. The Coombas were way better than expected early in the day or at high elevations where the snow was hard, too. I actually did not expect that I could hit early-morning hardpack on them. But they did very well, too. I don't know how the makers managed to make a fat/soft ski that handles slush and hardpack. Hats off to designer Doug Coombs and K2.

Comments about K2 Apache Coomba Skis 2009:

In close to 35 years of skiing at a high level, I can honestly say these Coombas are one of my top 3 skis I've owned - and I've owned a bunch.

Have a GS/SGS racing background and enjoy skiing both front side and back side. What I was looking for, I found in these skis: good ability to hold an edge on hard pack/ice for those early morning corduroy burners that make your face freeze to great float and flex in the freshies in the trees to effectively handling the mixed crud of a sunny, warm day post pow dump. I was surprised by the quick edge to edge ability and control in tight turning conditions for a ski with such width in both the trees and on hard pack.

This ski is a lot more than just a fat powder noodle. I've had skis with more camber, but this ski has some, not much, but is not a rocker or reverse camber ski. I was concerned about this design style given my enjoyment of front side high speed cruisers, namely the rocker wouldn't hold that edge as well.

I have no reservations recommending this ski.

Comments about K2 Apache Coomba Skis 2009:

This ski is one of those things in life that has to be experienced. I skied my 42nd day yesterday in 16-18" of fresh Utah powder and this ski rips through untracked like it was groomed. It handles the chop and crud equally well but what impresses me most it the quick, fast carves it puts down on groomed hard pack in between powder runs. (Not what I bought it for) It is stiff when you want it and floats when you need it- I am gliding through flat areas that I used to stay out of because I'd have to walk out- Great gear addition for an experienced all mountain skier.

I've always been reluctant to buy skis without trying them first. These had such good reviews I decided to take a chance. I couldn't be happier. I haven't skied deep powder yet but I've skied 8 inches of pow, groomers and crud. The ski worked well in all these conditions. They are fast, stable and responsive. What more could you ask for. I've skied in the back country as well . I've mounted them with Fritschi Freeride Pros. A great combination for skinning up and skiing down.

This ski is so awesome on steep faces. You can make precise turns and really control your speed. They also do bumps and groomers suprisingly well for a fat ski. In fact, they do everything I have put them to well. I think Doug would of been proud of this ski.

These skis do it all!! I heard they were a 90% Powder, 10% Groomer. Don't believe it, they do it all, and do it all well. If I could take only one pair of skis to the slopes, these would be the ones I would take. AND when they get in the powder, the deeper it is, the better they do. The turn initiation is easy and quick, and they are really responsive in the trees. They carve on the groomers like they were made for it, and excel in high and low speed turns. What else could you want?? They are fantastic!!!!
