Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011 Review
Colors displayed in alternate views may not be available
Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011: The Legend series of all mountain/freeride skis delivers the best that Dynastar has to offer. The most highly-reviewed all mountain series in the sport, the Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 combines the best of all available ski technologies to ensure that your day on the hill will never be disappointing. By utilizing rocker in both tips, these skis will cut through powder as if it was butter, and don’t even worry about sinking, because the Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 has a Progressive Tip that will allow skiers to float in powder no matter what.
Shape
A slow rise 400mm rocker in the tip allows skiers to maneuver effortlessly and float in powder or variable snow. The more traditional under-foot camber still allows the ski to be powerful and easy to rip in any condition or terrain.
Construction
Full length race department vertical sidewalls are used for ultimate edge grip, power, and balance on the snow. The core is surrounded by multiaxial fiber wraps to enhance torsional stiffness which equals stability and rebound energy, and top and bottom layers of titanal deliver superior stability and snow contact to power through even the worst of snow conditions.
Flex
Dynastar uses Wood Core 3D Construction that is known for giving the best flex patterns to maximize power and provide complete stability. The 3D profile makes the skis lighter, enhancing control and versatility.
Binding Compatibility
We recommend a brake that is equal to the waist width and at most 20mm wider. (brake width = ski width + 20mm)

Specs

  • Terrain: Big Mountain, Powder
    Big Mountain
Big mountain skis are designed for charging big lines with high speeds and big airs. These skis varry in width from wide, powder-oriented skis for skiing Alaska spines to narrower, mixed condition skis for ripping the beat up headwall at your local mountain. Skis in this category tend to be on the stiffer side, often with more rocker in the tip and less in the tail.
    Powder
These skis are for the deep days. If you like to find powder stashes at your local resort, go on backcountry missions for the freshest of fresh or heli ski trips to BC, powder skis are what you need to stay afloat. Skis in the powder category are wide and most often have some form of rocker or early rise plus a relatively soft flex. Many powder skis today are versatile enough to handle mixed conditions and harder snow.
  • Ability Level: Advanced-Expert
    Advanced-Expert
Whether you charge the steepest lines, carve with race-like precision, hit the biggest jumps or halfpipes; advanced to expert level skis/snowboards are for the more aggressive rider. You will often find the addition of layers of metal, carbon, bamboo, or other stringers in these. These features work to make a stiffer ski/snowboard with more power and rebound.
  • Rocker Type: Rocker/Camber
    Rocker/Camber
Rocker/Camber skis pair a traditional cambered profile underfoot with an elongated, early rise tip borrowed from fully rockered skis. This profile places the front contact point further back from the tip, while the rear contact point remains close to the tail. The rockered tip allows for better flotation and less edge catch for increased float in deep snow, while the cambered rear stores and transmits energy similarly to a fully cambered ski.
  • Core/Laminates: Wood
  • Tail Type: Flat
    Flat
This is your traditional tail, designed to have edge contact all the way through the tail, and only designed for skiing forward. This is also preferred for alpine touring, as you can stick the tails of your skis in the snow.

Skied this at Loveland on groomers, irregular large bumps and crud. Excellent Ski, straightlines were stable and predicable, able to shift to the edge off the base at full speed and rail intuitively. Tip never bobbles, despite relatively soft tip flex. Tip flex absorbs bumps at speed but the rest of the ski is all legend pro, stiff and powerful, I used it to launch over bumps , turn, then smear the tip if I lost control. Very agile in the bumps. This ski slayed crud, drove the tips, they charged through. Though not a pintail, the tail does release easily enough to get sideways and drop speed. It has a little too much camber for my taste in the sense of slarving potential, but no soft snow to find out on today. Overall, this is my favorite ski in this category, my second being the Rossi RC112, which is too much of a man ski for me to handle in the bumps. My only gripe about the LP115 is that is a very easy ski, totally competent, but not a challenge. So in essence my "gripe" is that it does what it's meant to do very well.

The Pro Rider 115's long tapered tip stands out first when you look at it on the rack. The rest of the ski is nothing you haven't seen from Dynastar before, the change is in the tip. The tip is soft, especially for a Dynastar and has a very long taper to it. On snow the plankiness of the ski is immediately apparent. Like all Dynastars you can feel that you are on a well-made stable big-mountain dominator. Rolling the ski on edge is an interesting endeavor. Traditionally, you would drive this ski like the race machines it was derived from. With the new tip, however, the ski will not respond to forward pressure from your boot. Instead, you have to roll the ski from the midbody and let the ski follow it's sidecut... or lack thereof. Bottom line, this is not a groomer ski and while it is certainly better than most other powder boards, it suffers from it's lack of sidecut. Off the groomers this ski's stability shines. This ski stuck landings as if you never left the snow, and while it was certainly cumbersome through bumps it certainly delivered the driver to safety as long as they could hang on for the ride.

Comments about Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011:

These are great skiis if you plan on using them in powder or for cutting through the chop. The flexion in the ski allows for ease of turn and for their width they are quite light.
They are not however an all mountain ski. Finishing a run on a groomer leaves you peeling for an edge. Carvers they aren't.

For the price that I got them they will handle any depth of snow without being to heavy to duck through trees.

Me, 6' 160 lb, length 184 cm with dukes. Bought these to fill out my quiver (pro rider 94 184 cm, volkl gots 182 & these),for those deep days. I am surprized at how versitile they are, road them this week end with only 8" on hard pack, you do not need much depth for these to stay above the hard stuff. I kept skiing them even when things got skied out, able to still make shorter radius turns, grip the hard pack. I will ride these even if there is a hint of new snow around.

The french screwed up the mounting point... All of the Dynastar pro skiers on this ski mount 3cm to 5 cm forward. With that, it's a totally different ski! Lot of fun, even works in the bumps, nevermind the trees, steeps, soft stuff as well as crud...

Comments about Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011:

I love this ski for the soft stuff. Yes it can hold it's own on hard pack, but there are much better skis for that. I've owned a lot of powder specific skis and have skied much more. It's not a strait liner, but it turns like a dream. Nice stiff mid body and tail for great control at speed.

Me 6', 164 lb., new England other skis pro rider 94's 184 cm & got's Bought in 184 cm mounted with dukes, obviously the ski handles the deep stuff like it should, the long turn radius and potential lack of grip concerned me when buying. It has been a lean snow year this season& these have been burning a hole in my pocket so I brought them out anyway. To my surprise they hold a good edge for a fat ski and I have no problem making short radius turns in the tight spots even made my way through some dumps without too much effort. This ski is much more versatile than expected and will be on my feet whenever we get fresh snow. I do not see a reason for me to keep the gots other than for a full on rock ski. 94's & 115's I don't need anything else.

Comments about Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011:

Solid, easy turning and forgiving. Skis varied terrain well. The softer, rockered tip help float in powder but the low profile gets deflected a little in harder crud. Fun on the groomed as well as the soft stuff. For a 115mm under foot the Sultan 115 is surprisingly nimble. A lighter ski that skis like a mid-weight ski. Responsive enough that you can make diverse turn shapes on wide open runs.

Comments about Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 115 Skis 2011:

Very versatile skis with great carving ability on groomers. Doesn't mind if you change the shape of it's turns and the tip is rockered enough that it handles much shorter than it's length. Crushes crud with mild tip deflection in harder conditions. Flows smoothly in the soft snow with a powerful tail that lets you maneuver consistently at speed. If you don't ski backwards (on purpose) and you love a lightweight easy skiing ski, the Sultan 115 is for you.
