Product Info

Dynastar Legend 85 Fluid Skis + PX 12 Fluid Bindings 2012: Dynastar s Legend series skis have been a dominant presence in big mountain skiing for close to a decade. The Dynastar Legend 85 Fluid Skis combine the power and stability inherent to the Legend series with a quick and versatile feel, creating a ski equally comfortable ripping trees, bumps, groomers and backside pow shots. The 3D Wood Core construction, two layers of titanal and full-length vertical sidewalls provide a stable and powerful feel. The slow-rise Freeride Rockered forebody lends float, maneuverability and easy turn initiation allowing the ski to shine in a variety terrain and snow conditions. Traditional camber underfoot provides power, energy and confident edge grip for strong turns on firmer snow and hardpack. The Legend 85 is a legitimate and complete all-mountain ski that offers high performance skiers the confident versatility to attack every aspect of the mountain.

Product Details

Shape

All Snow Rocker has a fairly long rocker, progressive only in the tip, for improved terrain absorption and impeccable flotation in powder. Ski pivoting is facilitated, making forward/rearward balance easier and reducing muscular fatigue when off-piste. The flat tail enables skiers to maintain the heel power crucial for high-speed freeriding and off-piste jump landings.

Construction

Traditional sandwich technology of Wood and Titanal layers guarantees precise carving stability and excellent torsion rigidity. The power is provided by two layers of fiberglass whose basic weight (thickness) can vary depending on the model and the desired ski-ability. The double Melamine/Phenol sidewalls ensures flexibility and power according to the skier's needs in the different phases of the turn.

The new Fluid X Plate is lighter than the aluminium version and offers higher performance than the composite version for 25% less lateral deformation and 50% less vertical deformation.

Bindings

The Look PX 12 Fluid Bindings are made for expert skiers looking to achieve maximum precision and performance in complete safety.

DIN range: 3.5-12

Included Bindings

Bindings do not come mounted to the skis. Always have a certified technician mount and adjust the bindings.

Core and Flex Pattern

The 3D Wood Core is hollowed out in the center where the stress is less intense and reinforced on the ski exterior, improving power transmission to the edges. The ski is therefore lighter, not only enhancing ski-ability but also improving performance and control. The Titanal top sheet is cut out to respect the shape of the core to provide light weight, grip, and ski-snow contact.

This is Dynastar's first attempt at a front-end rocker ski. The previous year's model was a "marketing" rocker. I own the 80 mm version of that year, and is a great ski. I thought I would try this one, given that it is a great value at this price including the binding system, a year newer, and has "real" rocker. The ski handles enough differently that it is an interesting addition to my ski quiver.

This one is made in Spain, has the PX 12 integrated binding system, and is very heavy with two layers of metal, a total weight for the pair of a little over 15 lbs. This is 1.25 lbs heavier than the 2011 Dynastar Sultan 80 the same length with a similar binding.

The front-end rocker makes the ski feel a bit tail stiff if one sits back at all. The tip rise requires one to be a bit forward on ski position to avoid the "tail ride" feel. Not a problem if one has good technique – the ski will train the skier fairly quickly.

What is interesting is how nicely this one can provide solid enjoyable performance at moderate speeds. One is not required to "ram & jam" this one at maximum effort to get it to perform. It will carve tight arcs easily in moderate bumps, hold up on ice nicely, cut the spring crud far better than the ultra light, ultra wide double rocker ski's we see on the hill today.

Now the "kiddies" reading this will think such a statement is bunk, but I see those guys struggling on the Armada kind of things. Sorry guys, you need heft for crud. Wide, light skis are not a positive except in first tracks in light powder – a rare occurrence even in the West. I was up the other day on the Dynastar in tough spring crud. I was chugging along fine, they were flopping all over the place.

I think this one offers good value. It would bring the intermediate to older relaxed advanced skier a bunch of fun ski days in a wide range of conditions given the solid, all be it heavy construction. It's not lively but it is fun. This opinion from a 36 year skier in his early 60's, 2000+ lifetime ski days, level 3 instructor grade operator on the slopes, well beyond caring about impressing anybody about anything.

Comments about Dynastar Legend 85 Fluid Skis + PX 12 Fluid Bindings 2012:

These are fine skis. They work great for Michigan ice and hard snow. Good in deeper snow, but the wider versions would be better. They perform to my liking in the conditions I live in. Playful. The only problem, and reason I did'nt give 5 stars, is when I recieved them, they had a factory flaw. This was what looked like a circular grinder or sander mark about .5 millimeters deep on the base of one edge. It does'nt affect performance but should'nt be there. I still love them.

I have not demoed many skis and have been on old technology for 12 years. These skis were a great improvement from my old skis. A good all mountain ski for all northwest conditions, I tend to stay on the groomed runs. The first thing I noticed is they like to turn. No chatter just a good all around ski.

Great for carving up groomers, decent flotation in powder, easy turn initiation, and plenty sturdy at higher speeds. Tips were a bit catchy for me right out of the box, but were perfect after a bit of detuning.
