Comments about G3 AviTECH T-Grip Shovel:

I've used a couple other shovels of lighter build, but I wouldn't have put them up against a serious layer of ice. I used the G3 to chip through a tough layer of ice when practicing beacon retrieval one night and I felt 100% sure of the tough build quality of the shovel with every full-blown stab into the ice. If you're digging someone out through an avalanche, I'm willing to bet a tough shovel that won't fail you is paramount when the warmed snow of the avalanche refreezes.

The only problem I think is there is no real advantage to having the T-grip. Carrying the D-handle in your backpack won't be a huge inconvenience in terms of space and the extra stability afforded by a D-handle is nice.
