I ordered a Precip large tall (I'm 6'4" with long arms) but received a regular large instead. However, the regular large fit perfectly with room for layers underneath (I personally prefer a more "athletic" fit rather than a baggy fit). So I called customer service and told them of the mistake, but instead of exchanging I wanted to get refunded the difference between LT and L. The rep was very friendly and immediately granted my request. It was one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. As for quality, it kept me dry in drizzling rain and safe from gusty winds while biking in Switzerland!

I got this in the medium tall (im 6'6" 175lbs and thin) and it fits wonderfully! BUT, this jacket is NOT WATERPROOF.  It is only water resistant.  I recommend this jacket only if it is lightly sprinkling or if there is a quick short lasting downpour. Any prolonged exposure to rain/water this jacket will still saturate.  For how expensive it was I had hoped it was at least waterproof.  I guess to stay truly dry you do have to buy a big ugly raincoat....live and learn.  Before I bought the jacket i read reviews on many sites and only read one that said it wasn't waterproof.  Should have trusted that one!

Good, but lining began disintegrating

By

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

brought one online somewhere else. Great jacket, simple and stylish, lightweight, foldable, weights almost nothing.  problem was the waterproof lining in the hood and seams started disintegrating. :(

Perfect for Raining Days

By

from Baton Rouge, LA, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

Received my first Marmot PreCip jacket as an anniversary present a year ago. So completely satisfied with the jacket, over the past year I have purchased as presents one for my husband, my mother, my father, my sister and recently a second one for myself (to get another color). It is practically "feather" weight and packs easily for travel, yet it is so well made that it will keep you completely dry and a year later still looks like new. I can use it fall, winter and spring in Louisiana. It has also been my "go to" jacket for summer rains in the Colorado mountains, a rainy October trip to New York City and a fall trip to Europe. I love that it is practical and fashionable.

Excellent lightweight rain protection

By

from Thrissur, Kerala, India

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I live in Seattle where it always seems to be raining. This is a very lightweight shell which offers superb wetness protection and is beautifully designed for adjustable fit AND breathability. Had mine for years and it doesn't show a speck of wear. I've also worn it in India during monsoon season and was so impressed I bought one for a friend down here. He pointed out a drawback worth mentioning: even though it will keep out the rain, you can still get a little chilly if you're riding a motorcycle because fabric so thin. Of course it wasn't designed for that, but that's the only complaint I'm ever likely to hear.

best rain jacket ever!

By

from North Carolina, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

We purchased this rain jacket a couple of weeks ago for our son.  He loves it!  The fit is true to size.  The quality is wonderful.  He has already put it to the test in rain and gusty winds and stayed dry!  It's lightweight, yet breathable.  My husband now wants one for fishing on rainy days!

Great jacket but new version lacks extra pockets

By

from Boulder, CO, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I've used the previous version of this jacket for many years. It was great for traveling: hood stored in collar and interior pocket as well as Napoleon-type pocket. Under warranty Marmot was very kind to replace the jacket, which speaks very well for the company. Unfortunately, to lower weight the 2 extra pockets were removed and the hood, while still stored in the collar, no longer is zipped away. I have used the inside pocket quite regularly while traveling in major cities where at times one's passport and wallet need to be kept away from potential pick pockets. This actually helped me out on the Madrid metro on one visit. Unfortunately, while I'll still take the jacket traveling, its utility is diminished. It is no longer the ultimate travel jacket for me.

Not Waterproof

By

from Maryland

Verified Buyer

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I am a Marmot fan. I have tents and sleeping bags and other gear and clothing that I have used and enjoyed for years. This jacket, unfortunately, is not one of them. It will be wet in just an hour or so in a moderate rain. Style, fit, and packability, are all great. Works great as a windbreaker or maybe in light mist or drizzle if you are not out in it for too long, otherwise buy another piece of rain gear if you truly need to stay dry.

Perfect for travel

By

from Western NY

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I  bought this jacket for a trip to Scotland (famous for rain) and wherever It covered stayed absolutely dry...even in a Glasgow downpour.  Would recommend adding the PreCip pants if you know you'll be outside a lot of the time. Got this in Moss. Love it, ordered a Large based on some of the reviews, but returned it for a Medium, which still has plenty of room for sweater, vest, etc. I'm a size 8/10 (5'6", 140 lbs) This jacket is  great for travel...lightweight and compact enough to throw in the daypack, tote or purse. It's also stylish enough for city use.  Great value.

Short lifespan

The jacket is not truly waterproof.  It is good in a light rain, but worthless in a down pore.  Now after about 4 years, the inner layer is disintegrating.

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

The only reason I bought this jacket was I wanted a lightweight Rain Jacket. If it isn't waterproof, well why would I want it? It was billed as waterproof, and it wasn't.I don't mind paying top dollar if it works, which it didn't.

lightweight wet weather gear

By

from Waterford, WI, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I went to to a brick and mortar store to purchase this type of gear.  I stumbled across the Marmot product, and it was just what I was looking for.  The price was in the same range as similar products carrying the store's own brand.  However, they didn't have my size, so I went online and found that Marmot has an online store.  I ordered exactly what I needed from the store, and it arrived quickly and in perfect condition.  I was looking for something lightweight, breathable, waterproof, and that I could easily slip on over other clothing.  I haven't used the gear out in the field yet, but it looks like it will work perfectly.

Not waterproof at all

By

from Kootenay Boundary, BC, Canada

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

Bought this jacket because of the nice fit and color choices (green). The first hike with it i was in heavy bush and noticed moisture in the creases of my elbows, chalked it up to perspiration/rubbing up against trees. The second hike was about two hours in a light rain. Completely soaked through, the jacket was saturated as were all of the clothes underneath. Extremely disappointed with the product. I guess it would make a nice windbreaker, but if you're looking for a rain jacket this product is a waste of money.

Great lightweight and packable rain jacket

By

from Connecticut, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I have a lot of Marmot winter stuff I use for skiing. So when I started looking around for 3 season backpacking gear, I looked at Marmot first. I think I've found an excellent solution once again. I'm 6'0" tall with a 45" chest and a 34" waist. I wear a 34-35 sleeve in a dress shirt. I have a fairly muscular build with no beer belly. Hopefully that will help you gauge the fit for yourself. Given the size chart and the fact that a Large has always fit me in the three Marmot Gravity jackets I own, I ordered the Large size. The fit is once again perfect for me. Not too tight, not too loose, with plenty of range of motion. The Precip jacket is extremely lightweight when you have it on. I can't imagine another few ounces making much difference. Also, I bought this to use for backpacking along with the Precip pants and a Precip Safari hat along with a Zeus down jacket. One of the cool things was that I was able to get both jackets and the hat in the same Greenland color. The pants are black. One of the benefits of sticking with one brand for clothing. I plan to use the Precip gear alone in warmer weather and use the Precip jacket as a shell over the Zeus in colder rain. For dry cold conditions, I'll just use the Zeus alone. My concern was that maybe the down jacket wouldn't fit well under the Precip jacket. It's not a problem. With a Large Precip jacket, the Large Zeus down jacket fits comfortably with plenty of freedom to move around. The Zeus also fits nicely under my Large Gravity jackets too but a little more snug. All four pieces of gear pack down nice and small while adding only about two pounds to my pack. And I think this gear will see me through just about any three season weather here in New England. I'm very happy with my Marmot choices once again.

Some good, some not

By

from Sweden, ME, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

been ordering this item every couple of years as I wear through them. they have always performed well. it does mystify me though why marmot would remove useful features we have all come to expect on the Precip. The good: collar separate from hood so it stands up nice. Dark ink, nice navy color. The not: elastic has been removed from the cuffs making it necessary to do and undo Velcro every time the jacket goes on and off. ( a real nuisance) Zipper pulls are gone. the idea is to keep improving the product, right! Lets bring back the zipper pulls and elastic cuffs guys!!!

Took it backpacking once and began to wear

By

from Oak Park, IL, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I went on a 2-day (24 mile) backpacking trip. After wearing the majority of the time hiking, I noticed right after completing the trip some discoloration on the inside of the coat, which I presume is wear from the carrying the backpack. If I knew it would wear so quickly, I wouldn't have worn it with my backpack.

compared alot of jackets before I bought this one

By

from Indianapolis, IN, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

great value, and does the job very well. It is water proof not water resistant, as well as breaths very well. Just got it so I cant really say how durable it is, but from a close inspection the details and construction of the jacket and pants are very sound. Overall, I'm really happy with the purchase and if you in the market I suggest the pants and jacket.

Takes Up Virtually No Space in a Backpack

By

from Arkansas, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I bought this jacket for a backpacking trip, and fortunately I didn't have to use it. But it's a great rain piece!  It is extremely lightweight and wads up into a tiny crevice in my pack. Size and color are true. I'm a large woman (XXL) and it fit loose with room to move.

Disappointed compared to previous models

By

from Washington, DC, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I recently replaced my (roughly) 4 year old Pre-cip with the new version, and I am disappointed. With the older one I absolutely could not think of any improvement that could have been made for the way I use it-as a light, daily jacket and as an outer layer for cold weather. But there are changes in the new one that are not improvements. Whereas the old jacket had cloth pulls on all of the zippers, the new one has none. This makes a big difference when you have to wear gloves. In addition, the sleeves now only have velcro where before there was velcro and spandex. I find myself constantly resetting the velcro everytime I take the jacket on or off when it was not necessary with the old one. I don't know if this has been done to hold the line on costs or if there is some other reason, but what was a "perfect 10" of a jacket isn't quite there anymore. All that said, the Pre-cip is still the best jacket in it's class. Zippers in the right places, spacious pockets, and good waterproofing all make it my favorite jacket for everyday use.

As advertised...!

By

from Alexandria, VA, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

Just bought my Precip rain jacket about a month ago, based on an Outdoor Gear Lab test report. So far, it has performed as reported and described (highly water resistant, even in heavy rain; very breathable), and I am very pleased with my purchase. Have only one minor quibble: it could use a third outer zip pocket (upper chest).

Loses Waterproofing Over Time

By

from Rhode Island/Oregon

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

Two PreCip shells in a row: After 1.5 years, it is no longer waterproof in anything heavier than drizzle. If you're outside 10 minutes or less, you'll probably stay dry. But if hiking in steady rain for more time than that, water starts to saturate the jacket...hood, arms, back, everywhere. This is after following the recommended washing instructions to a T and doing so regularly. I would recommend people do this as well, because to stay breathable, it needs to be clean. I love hiking in the rain because you usually have the trail to yourself, but I can't use my PreCip shell for that anymore. For only the ~$100 range, it's almost to be expected. I've come to learn that if you want to spend hours out in the rain and stay dry, stick with shells that incorporate eVent or Gore-Tex Pro. This usually means spending at least $250-$300 but to me, staying TRULY DRY with a breathable shell means forking out painful amounts of money. On most websites, the REAL waterproof stuff is under "Technical Shells" not "Rain Jackets"/"Rainwear". Overall, for the price it's a not a bad value (hence 3 stars) but it will not stay waterproof forever. After years of trial & error, I'd rather fork out a lot of money at once and have it for the better part of a decade, rather than buy a ~$100 shell every year. To be fair, I used both of mine heavily and packed them tightly often. They are super lightweight compared to the tech shells I have and are great for minimalist backpacking (which I use them for) but in my experience, they don't withstand the abuse of frequent backcountry rambles.

XXXL Precip Jacket Disappoints

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

I was disappointed with this purchase. I have bought 2 other Precip Jackets sized XXXL over the years, and I have been absolutely delighted with them. They allowed me to wear them as a stand-alone, or to supplement with a full fleece or vest underneath. This one, however, although tagged as XXXL, was smaller than my current, well-worn version. With a fleece underneath, it was very tight. It made me wonder if the sizing label was wrong and the one sent to me was actually a Large. Has the design changed that much in the past five years? This has been my "go to" jacket forever, both at home and in travels all over the world.. Now I may need to look for something else. In sum, I was disappointed: I sent it back.

Kept me dry in Alaska

By

from Natick, MA, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

Bought this jacket for a trip to Alaska, and it was great!  It kept the wind out when walking on a glacier, and it kept me dry during the drizzly, rainy days that are so common in Alaska in the summer. The hood is very adjustable, as are the sleeves. Great product. I look forward to using it again in the rainforest as we trek to see gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda.

Light Weight and Heavy Duty

By

from Raleigh, NC, United States

Comments about Marmot PreCip Jacket:

This is my second purchase for this same jacket. The first one was stolen from me by a co-worker. It is by far the most versatile and comfortable jacket I have ever wanted. I like the compactness of the hood on this model better than than other marmot jackets. The jacket holds up very well to all sorts of weather, including the cold. Plenty of room to add layers underneath and still be comfortable.
