I got my first Venture over 10 years ago. I believe it was about $75 so it has not even gone up much in price since then but the tech is better. About two years ago I noticed the inside coating was flaking around the hood/neck area, so I took it to the North Face store in Seattle and they sent it to warrantee/repairs in California and about two weeks later I received another brand new one in the mail. So all of the reviewers that complain about flaking and not liking the jacket because of it, well, if you'd read about the company you'd see that they have one of the greatest warrantees in the business. DON'T LIKE IT, THEN RETURN IT! Keep your receipts or better yet sign up with NF and they will keep your info/receipt in their computer system (I didn't have a receipt). NOW, enough of that. The shell is great at shedding rain. Remember that with any shell or outdoor technical jacket/pants you have to wash them regularly (like once a month or every two) preferably with a wash created for such things such as Nik Wax technical wash, and then treat it while wet with Grangers KT waterproofer or the Nik Wax version of such. Then dry it on medium in the dryer and your jacket will once again bead water. If you don't do this, no jacket including Gore Tex will bead water forever! BUT, that said, even if it does not bead water you will notice that no matter how wet it gets on the outside it does NOT soak through. If it does, then there's a problem with the inside coating so you send it to warrantee dept and they will most likely send you a new one. About the inside coating....it is rather "sticky" feeling and you DO sweat in there. Yes, the jacket IS breathable, but not perfect, that's why there are pit zips and you can also unzip the pockets for more air. I still sweat and it gets humid inside no matter what but it's not that bad. I like the hood on this jacket, I have a small head and while most any rain shell has an adjustable hood, I have found the NF brand to have the best hoods for fit. My venture has elastic on the cuffs as well as velcro which is a feature they discontinued a couple years ago, sadly. They should bring back that feature so one doesn't have to undo the velcro every time you take it off or put it on. This jacket has two zippered hand pockets and large inside mesh pockets (like for a map, or water bottle, whatever) which are great, and I've heard complaints on here about them tearing but even my old one I used for 7 years never tore! The jacket itself is also ripstop material so if you do get a hole, it won't widen. It's fairly warm too, you can layer as you wish to achieve warmth I wish they had a zippered chest pocket, that would be super helpful. But overall I love the jacket, great colors too, not expensive when compared to other jackets and it will last a LONG TIME.

I've owned two of these. In both cases the lining started peeling in the hood after about a year's use, and within a month had gotten real grotty. I'm not into having to buy a new one every year. Secondly, the earlier version of this the inside pocket netting extended down to the hem creating too large "bin" or "bucket" or "magazine" pockets - the main reason I bought the jacket, in the city these kind of pockets especially convenient for books and shopping In the current version, they took that extended netting out and you're left with only two hand-pockets. Other than that, the jacket looks great, the waterproof is great. Now if they reinstated the bucket pockets and fixed the peeling I'd be happy to buy another.

    Venture Jacket

    By

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I'm 6'3 and the XL fits very well. The quality of the jacket is clear just by wearing it. It's lightweight and completely water eproof. Perfect for days around the city and for hiking. My only complaint was that for the Cosmic Blue color option, the logo was also cosmic blue not white as seen in the online image.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

Almost everything about the jacket is great - the fit leaves the perfect amount of room in the shoulders, arms, and chest. I have the dark blue, the color looks really great. However I have 2 big problems with this - the pockets aren't deep at all, and stuff falls out if you don't zip them all the way. The length is also way too short. I'm 6'1" 175 lbs and the jacket sits above my waist. I knew 28" length would not be long by any means, but I wasn't expecting that short.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I'm an avid hiker/climber living high in Colorado mountains where rain/wind shells are mandatory. I had several other name brand shells from major gear manufacturers that were badly worn and needed to be replaced. I kept looking for something that had: 1) Waterproof shell, 2) Windproof shell, 3) Adjustable hood, 4) Pit Zips, 5) Front Zipper, 6) Front Velcro, 7) Stow-able Pocket, 8) Fit right, 9) Was lightweight. After looking at all the major brands, the North Face Venture was the only shell I could find with all these features? Now that I've used the Venture Rain Shell in the field, I ordered two more. This is a bomb proof shell you cannot go wrong with.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I just bought this jacket and really like it. This jacket is definitely meant to be worn with layers; it is very thin but very waterproof. It will probably not keep you warm except by being windproof.

CONS: I have a really small stature and even the small is very loose and baggy. I'm 5'8 and 130 lbs and I really can't stand how loose the arms are on me. It looks awkward and unstylish in my opinion, even after layering. Still, however a very practical and effective rain jacket. 4 stars. I wish there was an XS.

As for the performance of this jacket, I imagine the great reviews are accurate, however, as for the fit of this jacket, I was very unimpressed. TNF, for me at least, has always run slightly on the big side, but not enough to keep me from their jackets, of which I have a few. When I needed a quality rain jacket, I immediately went to the Venture and bought a small. I am 5'7", 140 lbs, and the small absolutely swallowed me, it fit more like a medium or large. I understand rain jackets are intentionally made to provide room for extra layers, but the Venture small is the largest "small" I've ever worn. Unfortunately, I had to return it, and opted for the more slim Mountain Hardwear Plasmic jacket.

I had a venture jacket that I enjoyed for many years.....until it began to "delaminate" in the neck area.

I retuned it to the warrantee dept.....

After a couple of weeks, I called for a status update......and was advised they would be sending me a new jacket due to the delamination.

They also gave me the opportunity to select a color.

This is what I call customer service......and is precisely why I buy NF !!!!

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

First of all this jacket is just absolutely great! I live in Seattle and commute a lot therefore I get poured on a lot and this is just my go to jacket in the rain. I love the color (I have a blue/darker blue 2 tone) and it keeps me dry. However I made this comment not only for this jacket but for all their jackets. See, I am a big Northface fan. I have 3 Northface jackets: nuptse vest, apex bionic, and venture. All of them are all 5 stars in functionality but Northface's problem is their size. I'm an average sized guy, 5.6ft. 137 lbs but all their jackets are too baggy! Their small isn't small enough. If I only went for functionality then I would keep buying Northface but style to me also plays a role.

I hope Northface creates a XS for men because their missing a huge chunk of the market for guys who require a better fit. Fit is such a big part of my buying preference that I actually moved on to other brands such as Arcteryx because they have good products and most importantly a better fit. I really hope there will be changes, till then I'm not buying Northface jackets.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I just recently moved to Seattle and quickly found out the number one piece of clothing to own here is a rain coat. Of course I would look no further than North face where I have been buying coats, jackets, fleeces, gloves, tents and sleeping bags for the last 20+ years. I knew I would get an excellent garment but this one out weighed my expectations. Not only does it keep you completely dry but it breathes and has arm pit zippers when you need even more fresh air. The hood is great as well and it folds uo small enough I can leave it in my truck console and throw it in my backpack for travel and hiking. As an added bonus it is even very attractive and looks pretty stylish for being so durable. Would recommend to any one who needs a raincoat. Liked it so much I bought one for my wife who loves hers as much as I do mine.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I bought this Jacket because my old NF jacket is over 15 years old and I thought that it would be nice to have a new one that is also high visible. I am an avid outdoors man who hikes, backpacks, and bikes year round in all weather conditions. I have worn this jacket twice now, once 2 weeks ago at Glacier National Park. I was wearing a high quality base layer, fleece and this jacket. While it did rain and snow during a 12 mile hike, it was not a heavy rain or snow. The draw back was the jacket did not vent at all, literally I was soaked so bad on the inside, that moister was steadily dripping out the end of my sleeve.

North face, you used to make a great product, but you have seemed to shift gears towards fashion and urbanites. Maybe it is time to get back to your roots. I am refunding this jacket and purchasing from your competitor.

This jacket was the only one I could find that had all of the features I was looking for in a lightweight rain jacket--bungee adjustment on the back of the hood so it moves with your head, pit zips for extra breathability, bungee adjustment at the bottom to seal out wind and weather, extremely lightweight, and packs into its own pocket--although I prefer to fold it up and roll it into the hood. The only thing I could say that needs improved on the design is that the cuffs of the sleeves could use a small bit of elastic built in. When I have the cuffs set at the size that fits my wrist, it is a little bit too small to get past my hands when removing the jacket, and I either have to undo the Velcro, or wear the cuffs a little looser than I normally would. Not a big deal, but elastic combined with the Velcro adjustment at the cuffs would solve this issue. Maybe I just have small wrists...
Overall a great rain jacket for anybody that is trying to keep their gear lightweight, without sacrificing any features that make a jacket like this truly functional.

I bought this jacket because I wanted to have a lightweight jacket for the rain. I coach boys soccer and in one of our games it was pouring, I wore this jacket and was one of the few people who was dry. I was very impressed by how well it perform even in that downpour.

I bought this jacket inUSA 4 week ago and have been wearing it here in Ireland since. I walk 10k per day and find both on dry and wet days my under top and inside of the jacket is soaking wet after 30 mins. I find it totally unsuitable as a rain jacket.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I looked at many different rain jackets. I was at The North Face store and tried this one on and it was exactly what I was looking for.
It has the dual draw string in the hood. The rear drawstring makes the hood snug to your head so you can turn your head from side to side and not be blinded by the hood. The other important feature was the zippers under the arm pits. This allows the coat to breath and regulate your temperature. I was surprised at how well the material breaths. At first I had my doubts but it works great. I am going to use this as a shell for my Denali vest and jacket to protect me from the wind and rain. It is a well made well thought out rain jacket. It is packable in the left hand pocket, it can easily fit in a day pack or back pack.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

The fit of the jacket is spot on if you plan on wearing only a t-shirt underneath. If you want to layer or wear a sweatshirt at all you will want to go up one size. The jacket could use more room in the shoulders. The length is shorter then I would like. It hits right at my waist, typically wear jackets that are about 2 inches longer. The jacket performs as described, keeping you protected from rain and wind. It would be nice to have an additional pocket on the chest/side area for cell phone.

Very happy with this jacket. I am 6'4" and 235lbs, I went with an XXL just to be able to have room for hoodie or sweater on under it. XL fit nicely with the t-shirt I was wearing when I tried it on. Soft material that does not make lots of noise. Zipper flaps with Velcro secure tightly. Great addition to the outdoor wardrobe!

Actually I would recommend item if interior lining didn't fail prematurely. The item performs well but the lining failure and the pants shiny appearance after approximately seven to ten washings leads me to believe that the product just doesn't hold up after time. Otherwise, I would recommend.

I purchased my first Venture Jacket more than 10 years ago, and finally had to replace it last month when the interior lining around the neck became worn. Everything still worked perfectly - the wear was just a bit unsightly. The overall quality and durability of this jacket is absolutely excellent - I would recommend it to anyone! Well worth $100!!

I had a NF jacket that seems identical that was about 7-8 years old that i was a bit disappointed in in that the arms started to leak - got wet thru the arms and the lining seemed to flake. Ordered the new one thinking it was different, but I think it's the same. Not sending back, but willing to try again. Good breathability and comfort on the trail and other than the problem of my older jacket as noted, in general kept me dry.

Comments about The North Face Venture Jacket:

I wore this in the shower over a tee shirt and came out bone dry. It passed the shower test! Definitely very waterproof! I love that it's so lightweight too. You can also throw it over a fleece if it's cold and rainy too. This is an amazing jacket. I would highly recommend this jacket. I liked it so much I bought a red, gray, orange, and olive one.

The best light rain coat I've found! Keeps you dry and is breathable so you don't get that sticky, hot feeling underneath. HyVent has made me forget about Gortex almost entirely.
