If you could only have one jacket, this all-round shell/parka this is the one!

Tested: watching soccer games, walking in the rain, fishing on windy wet lakes for walleye, ice fishing, hunting grouse, downhill skiing and ski race watching, outdoor hockey watching, hiking in any conditions, wearing a backpack, snow removal, igloo making etc. - check

Wind, rain, cold, and freezing cold (grouse hunted in -24 degrees in Northern Minnesota using it as the shell over insulation worked great! see photo).

If I am not pumping out tons of heat cross country skiing, running, or playing hockey outside, this jacket/shell/parka and it's zip-in compatible system is my Go-To Jaket. Just layer well underneath with shed-able layers and unzip the pit zips, pockets, and vary the front zip to adjusts for outside temp and body heat output. There is never bad weather outside with this jacket in your closet, duffel, or backpack (takes up some room in the pack but delivers when needed).

The North Face Zip-in compatible system works great. I have a TNF zip in fleece and TNF zip in insulated jacket that work great with it and on their own when I don't need wind, rain, wet snow, or bitter cold protection.

The North Face store even fixed a broken zipper issue for free!

Buy some piece of mind. Get one for yourself and someone you love - then go outside and have fun - in any weather!

I have been a long time, life long advocate of the the North Face brand and have put my life in the hands of their equipment countless times. As one would expect, after many years (10+), my original Mt. Lite had finally been deemed unrepairable by the experts at the Warranty and Repair center (On a side note, I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship of their repairs). I purchased this jacket as a replacement and was deeply disappointed in the design, fitment, and quality!

Just a few major design flaws:
Removable hood - this will allow wind and water penetration in severe conditions.

Poor Fitment - I ordered a Large (I'm 6' 200 Lbs, wide shoulders) and the sizing is much smaller than the previous incarnations of North Face Jackets. I tried 5 of my North Face zip in liners (Size L) in this jacket and none will fit properly. Additionally, the tight fitment compresses any insulation layers below, rendering them useless.

Zippers - The outer zipper on this jacket is a fine toothed zipper which will be prone to jamming and failure.

Low durability shell - The shell is built from light weight (94 g/m²) nylon with no heavy duty reinforcement in high wear areas and suffers from numerous unnecessary seams. This shell would never last in an outdoor alpine setting.

The takeaway from this jacket is that is was created for kids at the bus stop, or walking around the mall, but it has absolutely no business in the outdoor adventure world. Sadly, it appears that the brand as a whole, has focused on cost cutting and fashion while abandoned their roots. After speaking with the OUTSTANDING staff at my local North Face facility in Ann Arbor, I will be returning this jacket and giving the MEN'S CLOONEY TRICLIMATE® a try (Now with different expectations).

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I have Mountain Light and Nuptse Jackets also from year 1999 and 2006. 2006 version was down scaled by replacing zipper flap buttons by Velcro, slightly worse fabric and one less chest pocket. Below is description of 2015 version comparing to 2006 version:
Main Zipper has one third size teeth and seems to be from lower grade material. Failed zipper could create dangerous situation in winter.
Inside mesh fabric is not there any more. Instead there is a second not breathable layer. Jacket feels hot, like plastic bag.
Sleeves are one inch shorter (both XL), thus not going over gloves.
Sleeve ends are flat finished, and do not have elastic bands inside any more.
Sleeve end Velcro is half the width and one third shorter
Chest pocket has no rain flap and is less than half size so my hat does not fit in it.
Lower pockets has reversed flaps, thus easier to rain in and more difficult to put gloves in.
Internal pocket is about half size. Scarf does not fit in.
Under arm vents are just openings without mesh.
I did enjoy comfortable, light, breathable and very warm (with insert) jacket, which I can wear to the office. I do understand that corporate bottom line is important, but the Mountain Light Jacket has become unusable in my opinion.
I would appreciate if other reviewers would leave suggestions of alternatives.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I chose this jacket as a warranty replacement to a 22 year old Mtn. Light jacket I have owned and used for all those years. The North Face truly stood behind their promise of lifetime warranty, however, what they fail to say is that they fail to make the jacket to the same specs as in years past. This is a true testament to the fact that "They don't build 'em like they used to." Although I am sure the jacket will serve me just fine, I highly doubt I will be able to get 22 years out of it and have it survive. It seems light, cheap and not very durable. In camparison to the jackets that run in the $500 - $600 range, they are closer to what I owned, but the North Face would not agree with that. So far, the jacket has kept me dry in rain, but I have yet to use it while backpacking, in the back country, or in the winter.

This jacket has unusable pockets during wet or cold weather, very poor design.
To use pockets, a zipper that runs from your shoulder to belt line must be pulled down to open the pocket. The jacket is totally open on each side allowing rain to pour in, and in freezing temps, warmth to get out.
Jacket would be more usable if the zipper pulled up from the belt line to open the pocket. I'll be returning it.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I had a TNF jacket for 15 years and loved it but it wore out after hars use. So I decided to get the Mountain light with a liner midweight. I have yet to take it skiing but have used it for light hiking in rain and snow. But I am finding the quality severely lacking. I am about to send it back for a second time. The first was that the velcro on the storm flap just came off. Now one of the pocket zippers just broke while I was waiting with my son for the bus and just had my hands in the pocket. I looked at the jacket in a new light and realized all the hardware was cheap, the zippers and pulls small and weak the Hood snaps plastic. Just overall they took a great design, great material (goretex) and just went super cheap on everything else. If not for the lifetime guarantee I would have returned this to REI a long time ago. But it is mid winter and my only winter coat so not sure how I can return it for repair and keep warm.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I bought a new Mountain Light to replace my old late-90's Mountain Light. Right off the bat, it looks a little cheaper than previous versions, primarily due to the fact that the "North Face" and "GORETEX" logos are no longer embroidered...which I really dislike. I was willing to overlook that change...but the big disappointment is the lack of underarm zippers to regulate heat. I found the underarm zippers to be very helpful when backpacking/hiking and skiing. Although the rest of the jacket is largely up to par with its predecessor, the lack of underarm venting makes this jacket much less attractive when shopping for a waterproof shell that is universally adaptable to many sports/uses.

Short sleeved jacket - What Happened TNF?!

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I've had a TNF Mountain Light Jacket for 17 years. It was awesome. This year it finally started showing some wear and a couple of leaks. I was excited about getting a new shell. I like my Mountain Light so well that I figured I'd just get the new one. I had to order it because they didn't have my size in the store (XXL). It arrived yesterday. THE SLEEVES ARE EASILY 2" SHORTER PROBABLY MORE LIKE 3" SHORTER than the mountain light jacket I've been wearing since 1997. There's no way it will work for skiing with a gap between the end of the sleeve and my gloves. I'm very disappointed that I'll have to return it. I'm 6'-4" 230lbs. My old mountain light fits great. I guess I'll just have to keep wearing it until I can find another replacement. Bye Bye North Face. Thanks for screwing up a good thing.

                  Very Bad Design

                  By

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I recently purchased this jacket by really looking at Gore-Tex and Goose Down technologies. The real downside is, it can't keep warm enough as the hand pockets run from almost chest to belt line. It's better that North Face updates the design and keep regular hand pockets. I would have given five stars but will go with two because of design.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

Just picked up the TriClimate Mountain Light jacket after owner an older version of the iconic Mountain Light jacket for almost 15 years. The pockets are still the same that runs almost the length of the chest so that doesn't bother me too much, although the regular non-triclimate Mountain Light jacket now has actual hand warmer pockets. Perhaps TNF needs to incorporate that into this design. Overall, I feel the weight of the jacket is a little lighter but because I haven't experienced it in rain so can't comment on the Gore-Tex, but the warmest of the 550-fill goose down is definitely an improvement over the fleece that my old Mountain Light had.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

Having owned several jackets from Columbia, Eddie Bauer and even the North Face Mcmurdo as well as the Gotham I have to say that this is by far the warmest of the bunch. The Gortex shell not only protects against a torrential frigid downpour but it eliminates wind from entering the jacket itself.
Living by a lake and owning a dog I can vouch for what this coat can do. The 550 weight down is also a big plus but I still have to believe that the Gortex wind protection is the real deciding factor over the competition.
Simply throw on a sweatshirt, cinch the waist drawstring and let winter throw whatever it has at you, you will barely flinch.

One other great advantage to this coat is the amazing hood adjustability, allowing for a snug contoured fit that will keep even the strongest frigid winds at bay.

                      Great product North Face...Kudos.

                      Highly recommended.

This coat is EXACTLY what I wanted - lightweight, warm and waterproof. I just wish the pockets were the standard one on each side and one top at chest. I've had this coat about a month and still haven't found a way to get gloves easily without having to unzip and get from inside pockets. I'm a trim 5'7" 140 pound lady who normally wears a S or M, but TNF women's coats run narrow, so I selected a men's S in black, which fits perfectly in the shoulders & looks good.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

I have one of these from 2005. I had been looking for another jacket specifically for wearing on rainy days in the summer. This was one of them. The one I have a little larger so I can wear the zip in compatible products. After looking at the ones that were around last year and this style, I'm disappointed in them now.

The bad: The hood zipper is no longer full length. That makes it easier for a gap to form allowing cold air to make it through if it is windy. The main zipper no longer has large teeth. Zippers with smaller teeth fail quite a bit more in my experience. I upgraded the zipper on my work jacket to one with large teeth after the original failed less than a month after getting it. The napoleon pocket no longer has a little flap over it. The outer part is now polyester instead of nylon.

The good: Red is an option again. No elastic in the sleeve cuffs.

The biggest thing I don't like about mine is the pit zips. I don't like pit zips to begin with. The design on mine is one of the worst though. Mine also has the Gore-Tex XCR and nylon for the outer part of the jacket which I really like. It would be great if I could find another new one like mine.

Hopefully TNF will make another one similar to it one day. Even if they made another one with a good zipper, I might consider it.

I will finally be replacing my Mountain Light Jacket and Denali fleece with another Mountain Light Jacket and Denali fleece! I had both for 20 years, yes, 20 years! I wore the combo while skiing, which I did a lot (for years I averaged around 25 times per season). Even in extremely cold situations (single digits with high winds) the combo kept me nice and warm. There is plenty of storage in the large front pockets.
I used the Mountain Light jacket as a shell in the fall and spring, which proved to be perfect for rain and a great traveling companion due to the ability to roll it up and pack it almost anywhere. It's been to seven countries and numerous states and couldn't have been better.
The Denali fleece is heavier than regular fleece jackets, so it really works well with or without the shell. I just picked up an all black Denali. Now, I just need to decide what color Mountain Light to get to replace my blue one.
                                  I love this jacket.

I bought this jacket for a trip to Europe. I needed something that was waterproof and could be switched from light to heavy depending on where I was. This jacket covered all those basis. Now for the pros and cons Pros: Good looking. Sturdy construction. Good fit (I'm 6'2" 240 pounds and the XL fits perfect). Easy to zip liner in and out. Cons: Not nearly as warm as I was hoping anything under about 40? and you need to start layering. The pockets have a very weird design and are hard to use. They zip from your arm pits all the way down your side which make it awkward. No pit zips. All around its a good jacket for the price.

I previously had ordered a custom Denali jacket. I ordered this coat so I can insert the jacket and turn it into a 3 in 1 combo. Great styling on the coat, comfortable, and wind and water resistant.

This jacket looks great and is very versatile. I originally got this jacket in November for the upcoming winter, however the waterproof layer did not last very long (about 4 months). Given the price, it is very unfortunate that this jacket did not hold up to expectations.

I've been disappointed in the newest version of the Mountain Light Jacket that I purchased in 2015. The last one I purchased was in 2010 and was of excellent quality. This version feels much cheaper and I can notice a decline in quality (yet the price is the same). My biggest complaint is the main zipper keeps coming undone at the bottom. That is extremely frustrating!!! I also had to send it back once for repairs because the front Velcro had already become un-stitched. The only reason I didn't give it one star is the fact that there is now a front chest pocket. That was not on the previous version and I found it to be a nice addition.

It's products like these why The North Face has become even more popular in the last 10 years. It's the look and the function.

The jacket is very lightweight; it doesn't feel like you're even wearing one. Everything is adjustable to fit your body's dimensions, whether it's at the cuff, or around the waist. You can even purchase a vest to line the jacket in the colder months.

The look has a nice casual touch to it. It's great to wear on a night out when it's raining a little (and if it's dry, you can unzip and remove the hood), or you just need something a little extra to stay warm.

I just got in from about a 4'' snow here in NJ and it was the best jacket I ever owned.. after taking the snow off the car and shoveling I came back in and nothing went thru... I was as dry as I was when I left... Not only that its 34 degrees and I didn t even need anything other than the Mountain Light.. Excellent purchase and Excellent Jacket

He had been looking at raincoats for a very long time but could never make up his mind. I surprised him by getting this jacket. When he opened it, he was so excited to try it out. Well - we live in basically desert so there isn't really a place to try it out often here. So, he hoped in the shower with it. This coat in all it rain-protecting glory earned me some major cool points with the boyfriend.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

Great Jacket. The outer shell finish is slightly slicker and lighter than the HyVent North Face Jackets which I like very much as well. I'm 6'2" and 200 pounds and the XL fits great. Great coat for skiing, hiking and wet weather.

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket:

Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable, so it's essential to venture into the alpine environment well-prepared. Rock climbing in the spring and summer months can confront wet weather, and the Mountain Light affords more than adequate protection from even gale force downpours. For ice climbing, the ML combines beautifully (zipping into the lining) with the Nupste down jacket, affording wind- and water-proofed insulation even in subzero temps.
