I purchased a pair for both my wife and I. We have us used them in Park City for the last several days in both sunny and near white out conditions. They have worked flawlessly and the sound is exceptional compare to what I expected. I do wish that when your phone rang that it came thru the speakers rather than just the iPhone ringer; however, I ran rarely think of a reason to answer the phone when I am boarding. On the other hand, when I do, it's nice not to have to remove my helmet. The microphone does not have noise reduction, but frankly that's not a big deal. My wife and I both like these and would buy the again.

I have been extremely pleased with my various Smith helmets and goggles over the years. My new Vantage/IOX combo rocks and looks cool as heck too. Only thing I needed was some crunchy tunes to ride to! The Skullcandy speakers in the Single-Shot kit put out good sound, good bass; no complaints there. I have no discomfort with the earpads, and love having music when I ride. However... even though it's more of a Skullcandy issue and I know Smith is aware already, I am compelled to reiterate: The inline controller is AWFUL, and here's why: 1) It rattles. If you lightly shake the controller, you can hear things rattling inside. It just feels CHEAP, and for the price, it shouldn't. 2) Placement on the cable itself is not optimal. If you clip it to the outside of your earpad, it's fine, but... 3) Having it exposed in anything but bluebird conditions is just a bad idea. For a product designed to be used in wintersports activities, the controller is NOT AT ALL water-resistant. Heaven forbid you get a powder shot to the face and get the controller wet! On a recent powder day, I kept it tucked inside my jacket to avoid getting it wet, but it sat right in on my chest and all I managed to do was inadvertently pause my music or turn the volume down because the controls got smooshed against me while riding. Also, the audio tends to abruptly cut in/out from mono to stereo just by using the volume wheel. Simply put, the extra twenty-five dollars the Single Shot kit commands over the Direct Connect kit is not justified by the addition of a sub-par, cheap plastic controller. Not having to take the phone out of my pocket to change up my music is great, but that's not good when I'm constantly having to mess with the remote just to get it to work properly. A slimmer, rubberized weatherproof remote would be greatly appreciated.

Love the product, tired of replacement cords

By

from Utah, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Read all the reviews, there is a pretty consistent theme here. 1) The cord and clip are not robust enough for the intended use. 2) The speakers/earpad combination makes everyone's ears sore after a few hours. This product is awesome to use. Music + Phone Calls + Siri all while skiing without removing gloves. Love it! Sound is good quality! The execution by Skull Candy is disappointing. Smith is great to cover with its warranty. However, the latest generation is even less robust than the first generation. For the $50 price, I expect better materials and quality from Skullcandy. I would really push for Smith to get on Skullcandy to re-engineer the next generation ASAP. I love it. Its the best thing out there for ski helmets. I'm just frustrated about returning it all the time.

Not bad, not great

By

from Montana

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Mine quit working about a month into the season -the sound cuts in and out like it's a loose cord somewhere. Sent it back and got a new one and it lasted the rest of last season. It sounds good when it works. Bluetooh is a little weak.

Skullcandy cord is sub par

By

from Oregon, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

My wife and I both purchased helmets equipped with this product and both cords failed under 10 uses. the button went first and I was unable to playpause or do anything else with it then eventually over the season the audio would cut out if I turned my head. replacing the cord with a different brand solved the problem. Headphones are great fit is good, cord sucks

These work but have some flaws

By

from Washington Cascades

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

The speakers are fine in my Vantage helmet. They make the ear pads a little hard on my ears but nothing terribly uncomfortable. The port hole on the left ear is a little weak as the female end of the headphone cord will either get pushed into the pad or get pulled out so you'll have to dork with it sometimes to get connected. The real downer of the system is the Skullcandy inline control unit. The connections were horrible out of the box and would only provide mono in one ear. If I squeezed the cheap plastic piece or pushed the button hard enough to jam in then I would get stereo. It was nice having the volume wheel but adjusting the volume would make the unit go mono again. I never intended to use the contrler for phone or track control. Just wanted the volume dial to work! My solution was to buy a bare bones male/male 3.5mm cord and forgo the skull candy cable. it's plain cheap junk. I adjust the volume by hitting the volume rocker on my phone through my jacket. In short, the earphones work great themselves but don't get your hopes up about the controller.

Great idea, poor quality from Skullcandy

By

from Portland, OR, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I wish Smith would partner with Sony or Bose for this product. The idea is great, and everything integrates well with the Smith helmets, but the quality of the cord and the control device are just poor. Mine started to "short out" after clipping the control piece on the outside of my helmet ear strap for ease of use. With any moisture in the air or fast skiing (I ski really fast) it froze or just quit working. I've found that it works better if I clip the control button inside the collar of my jacket to protect it from the elements, and I use my chin to push the button. But frequently the volume control is bumped and you have no sound or it's far too loud and adjusting requires stoping mid run, taking gloves off, and unzipping the jacket. The solution is simple, make a replacement cord with a control device that is ENTIRELY waterproof and weather resistant that can be clipped externally, and also make the volume control an up and down button rther than a wheel (like the headphones that come with an iPhone).

Helmet is amaizing, speakers wonderful!!! cord is the worse!!!

By

from Turlock, CA, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Bought the variant brims for my son and i last year, we were very excited to have helmets with speakers built in!! the cords starting crapping out about the third time we got buried in deep snow or after you'd hit a powder bank they would cut out. after a while they would work again, but towards the end of last year they stopped working altogether. im replacing my cord with one from radio shack, just a single audio cord, no controls though :/

By

It does not answer calls, it does not advance songs it does not work. I returned it for a new one SAME PROBLEM!! Speakers work great, inline controller doesn't

By

from Idaho

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I have used several iterations of this product through the years and this one is right on par with the rest. The speakers work great; the "drop-in" system was a long time in coming. The controller for this product is essentially useless; it sometimes (rarely) works as designed, but more frequently doesn't function at all. You will be left frustrated with intermittent audio. If you turn your head one way the music will be in mono, look the other way and it will be stereo. Save yourself the headache and frustration and get the direct connect.

Junk

By

from Denver, CO, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Skullcandy = junk. I've purchased my last Skullcandy product. Been through 3 different sets of ear buds and now 2 of these Single-Shots. Never again. 1. Junk. As mentioned, they're Skullcandy and thus junk. The absolute cheapest in the industry. Pretty sure everyone knows that by now. The first set I bought broke before I ever used them. Skullcandy replaced them cheerfully but they broke again in a few weeks. I gave up. This season I decided to try another pair so I bought some more. I knew Skullcandy was junk but screw it, I want tunes. The mute/pause button is now broken on my new pair. 2. Uncomfortable. Maybe I have big ears but I'd say mine are pretty normal. They press up against my ears so much that they're terribly uncomfortable. I'd even go so far as to say painful after about an hour. I'm going to just buy some buds (not Skullcandy). If Smith OR ANY HELMET MANUFACTURER decides to build some of these that are thin and durable, that's whose helmet I'll be buying.

This is a very cheaply made, poor quality product.

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I bought this hoping to have a decent sounding system without dealing with ear buds. There is a clip piece that is really poorly made and cheap. Right out of the package it didn't work properly. Great idea poorly executed by Skullcandy.

Great sound cheap cable and switch.

By

from Honolulu, HI, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I have put about 25 full ski days on this setup. The speakers sound quite good with better bass than than I expected. I really like the big button on the line cable. Easy to hit with gloves on. For the most part no complaints. But, like everyone else, the left ear shorted out and the Skull Candy line cord just feels cheap. For iPhone owners this cheapness is more pronounced because their smart phones are of such high quality. I would happily pay $25+ for a truly well designed big button replacement cord.

Poor quality control, poor controller design.

By

from Tahoe

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

As mentioned by many before the controller is lame. The buttons are too big and constantly get touched by my jacket inadvertently no matter where it's placed. Headphones are shorting out right out of the box.. If I turn my head left or right they short out so I have to play with the connection at the helmet to get music to play in stereo.

Speakers are good but control doesn't work

By

from VT

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I bought 2 units and both stopped working after the 1st day. The controls are useless as others have stated. If you buy this product it should be with the expectations the controls dont work and you are paying for helmet speakers. It dont understand why they put a product like this on the market. I bought an aux cable with mic but it doesnt have volume.

First Lasted 2 seasons

By

from Rochester, NY, USA

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I purchased a Holt+Skullcandy helmet at the start of the 2010-2011 ski season. I used it maybe 8 times that season, about 4 times last season and three times this season before it lost connection in the left ear. The volume wheel had become a bit funky about a year ago, cutting in and out when moved. I found that the controller, while cheap feeling worked fine for pausing, skipping tracks, and answering/ending phone calls. This was both with my Palm Pre and my current Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I like the product, but it does seem to be poorly made. They could be a bit louder as well. However, Smith warrants their products for life. I sent them in with the warranty claim form from this website and got a new retail package back yesterday. It was a total time of a bit less than 2 weeks to get a new set. That is pretty great service and I am happy about that. If this keeps happening, I'll just keep submitting warranty claims for replacement. It is a bit of a hassle, but I haven't found anything with this functionality at this price point.

Flawed Design

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Good Idea but bad design. The connection where the speaker cords connect to the main cord shorts out terrible. The only fix is to tape it together securely. The audio quality is fine when it works. The speakers are somewhat bulky and tend to make your ears sore after an entire day of wearing a helmet. FIX THIS PRODUCT! NOT WORTH THE MONEY...

Great sound, poor hardware quality

By

from Sugarloaf, ME

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

Purchased the Single Shot for my Vibrant Brim helmet. The mini speakers fit well in the ear pieces, but are a bit uncomfortable after a full day of skiing (ears hurt at the end of the day...from the device, not the sound quality). The sound quality form the speakers is actually pretty good. The inline clip w/mute button and volume knob is poorly designed by Skull Candy. It worked the first time I used it when I installed the item. But 2 weeks later the mute/pause button did not work at all. It was not dropped/stepped on/didn't get wet...nothing, simply didn't work. It's covered under warranty, but I needed a new one in a rush, so I bought a new cable rather than sending he entire unit back.......$10 for the cable...the shipping cost more than the item. No wonder it broke. Bottom line: sounds great, poor quality of hardware.

Sound was good but was otherwise very disappointed in the product.

By

from Upstate NY

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

I received this item as a gift and was looking forward to trying them out. The design of the speakers is nice in so far as they fit my Smith helmet perfectly and was comfortable in the earflaps. The sound the speakers put out was surprisingly good. Unfortunately beyond that I am extremely disappointed. The in line control button is made of such poor quality that when you shake it you can hear pieces rattling around inside it. Turn your head one way or another and the sound cuts out, has static, or is muffled. Pressing the button to pause, advance or repeat rarely works if at all. The volume wheel is so inconsistent in that it’s not worth having at all. This was all after just the first use. I would hope that Smith Optics reads these reviews (as well the reviews on other websites) and takes some action to change the design and quality of the audio system for future consumers.

Great Idea...weak delivery

By

from Warren, Vermont

Comments about Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Kit:

My first Single Shot had a defective cable (just like others have noted). Smith replaced the whole product promptly with their bullet proof return policy. Pros : •Fantastic idea : Use phone and Siri all day without having to fumble with your phone...also allows phone to be buried under layers to prolong battery life during the day. Cons : •Skull Candy's cable is cheap and prone to issues...(read the other reviews, there's a better replacement from Amazon after my 2nd cable got glitchy). •The volume adjustment has no indicator of if it's turned up or down. •Personally, I find the speakers press on my ears enough that, after a few hours, my ears are a little sore. •iOS 8 for iPhone, because of security issues with ApplePay, has reduced the functionality of Siri so that you can't listen to text messages but you can send new ones out....(weird...I've contacted Apple about this). •Also, I think the overall quality of the speakers are pretty low, but haven't compared to similar helmet speakers. Overall, amazing idea, weak delivery.
