This bag has somehow survived more than seven years of what surely counts as backpack abuse, and with zero damage to function.
I've mainly used it for school, where I'm usually carrying several notebooks and binders, a textbook or two, a 13in Macbook, a few smaller books, some snacks, and a large pencil pouch (at least). It also took me on a three day trip up and down a mountain and countless out-of-town adventures. When I packed lightly, this bag could easily hold everything I needed for a week long leisure trip.
The only reason I'm buying a new one is because my 100lb rescue dog chewed the front buckle off one day when he was left home alone and anxious, and it wasn't really something that could be repaired. The pocket itself is fine, and everything else about the bag still works perfectly, so it's totally a petty thing. Also I figure if the old one's made it through all this, I might as well give it a rest.
I cycle regularly, and love the features this newer design offers to hold bike lights, helmets, and locks, and love the way TNF packs can be customized so much for comfort. It means a lot when you're sitting in a weird position on a bike. (I am a woman, and bought basically this same one when I got my first one, and it has fit wonderfully, despite not being tailored to more feminine proportions.)
Plus, I'm messy, and this bag keeps me as organized as I'll ever be (without being overwhelming or absurd about it).
My only complaint is that two of the zipper pulls broke off a couple years ago, but it looks like they've changed the design now, so it shouldn't be a problem.

The bag is really comfortable and seems durable. However, the bag has a huge flaw. Once you put things in the main compartment, the organizing bags in the secondary compartments become useless because nothing will fit in them anymore. For something to fit in these small bags would require the main compartment to be almost empty.

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

Excellent pack for school. Modest capacity, but big enough for a couple of classes worth of books. The pockets and lap top pocket are well thought out and very well constructed. If you are looking for a good school pack, this one is an excellent candidate.

I would rate it at five stars if the main compartment was 6 or 7 liters bigger.

I would recommend this backpack to any student who is looking for comfort and even style! I carry about 3-4 notebooks and a textbook at all times. Along with that I also carry a MacBook with its charger and a TI84. This backpack is truly ergonomic and allows me to be pain free from my shoulders and back. Can't wait to use it when I go camping! Truly a great investment, in my opinion.

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

The Recon backpack is a great example of where comfort meets utility. I've now used this pack on multiple hikes up mountains in Utah and Switzerland, storing everything from my camera to camping gear efficiently. As well, when traveling, this has been my go to carry on as it has padded sleeves to fit my laptop and kindle. Great pack!

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

I've used this pack for 14 years! It lasted all through college as well as many hiking and camping trips. It is also perfect for a short vacation to hold all my gear and keep it organized. I love the ergonomics and durability. I was heartbroken when some of the material inside the pack started to breakdown but the warrantee service was impeccable and I've received my new pack within days! I look forward to putting the new model through its paces! Thanks

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

i have bought a few thenorthface products from mens shoes, women snow boots, sweaters, coats ect. so when it came time for a new backpack i naturally started researching for a northface pack. i was considering 4 different models Big Shot, Jester, Borealis, and Recon. i thought Big Shot was slightly to big. Jester i didnt like the design as much. and Borealis i thought seemed more of a female model even though it might be uinsex i see a lot of females with that bag at school and even in the comments for borealis it seemed more for girls. so i decided on Recon. i like the style and while all the bags have pretty much the same inner pocket design especially with the smaller zipp section, which i think is good and very efficient.

i mainly use this bag for transporting my Magic the Gathering cards to events. so i have a binder deck boxes. these cards are worth about $2800. the bag keeps them nice and safe in terms of padding and protects my cards from falls or being smashed by a hard object and protecting the cards from damage. another thing is that the bag stands upright when i put it on the ground which is very nice. its comfortable on my back i usually have to wear it for 8-10 hours while at a tournament. it also keeps my things tucked nicely away too like my wallet and cell phone and sizable vaping mod, with each item having its own pocket. i also sometimes bring my laptop to and from a friends house and it fits nicely and also seems very protected.

overall i really like the pack its cool and in-style yet not a lot of people have this model which still makes you feel exclusive. i could be at a 3000+ person tournament and not see this pack on anybody else back.

anyone considering this pack should get it i could see this bag working for school books and form camping or hiking. great product great company and i cant wait till i get another the north face product maybe snow pants next winter.....

      Perfect Dual-Purpose Commuter Bag/Day Pack

        • Office

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

I needed a new commuter bag, but was looking for something that could also be comfortably used as a day pack or as a travel bag (think carry-on). There are not a lot of options out there that cater to both needs, but low and behold I found the North Face Recon pack at an REI store late one night.

The pack features a padded laptop sleeve/compartment for a typical 15" laptop, a dedicated tablet (iPad) sleeve, and a number of smaller organization pockets for various other gadgets/items (pens, phone, spare batteries, chargers, whatever), and even has a few stretch loops for keeping charging cables. On the outside are two mesh water bottle pockets (I keep a travel umbrella in one of mine) and a 3rd mesh pocket on the back. Two adjustable stabilizer straps allow you to snug down the load and keep the weight from moving around, and the adjustable belt strap can be completely removed if you don't want to use it. There's plenty of internal room for whatever you might need to haul to the office or classroom besides the computer (books, notebooks, paperwork, etc).

But when the work week is over, dump all your office gear and load up with a hydration bladder!! Yup, this pack has a reservoir loop built-in above the laptop compartment. Just slides you reservoir into the laptop compartment and hook it on the loop, then route your drinking tube out the port (top of bag, between the shoulder straps) just like any other hydration pack. Then load the bag with whatever you need for your day hike, and reattach the waist strap if you want it. The Flex-Vent backing/padding works really well.

Only one small complaint...the interior organizer pockets could be a bit "looser". When you start to fill the pockets with various items, the fit gets a bit tight. Not a deal breaker, but it would have been better to leave some slack in the pockets. I also wish the bag came with a rain cover, but you can purchase a generic North Face rain cover.

Couldn't be happier with this purchase!

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

I loved this backpack so much! Sadly, I just had it recently stolen at school (after only 1 month of use :/ ) and I really miss it a lot. Sometimes during long drives on the highway , I still think of her (yes, it's a her), sitting on the shoulders of some miserable soul out there... But I digress, now that I'm browsing backpacks again, I figured I should review this one. I bought the grey/maroon colorway at The North Face store in Brentwood. It fit perfectly (6'1, bigger build) and always hung on comfortably. No matter how much stuffed I piled into every compartment - books, folders, notebooks, clothes, water bottles, tablets and keyboard - it always remained the same shape and didn't feel heavy like my basic Jansport would with 1/3 of things in there. Absolutely heartbroken that I don't have my backpack anymore, but I am looking forward to purchasing a new one again soon. If you are really considering purchasing a North Face bag, buy THIS backpack! Recon is the way to go, you won't regret it! Just don't lose it or you'll be left heartbroken like my lonely self, left with nothing to hold on to, but vivid reminiscence of the wonderful times spent with my beloved Recon backpack..

Comfort was great, never sweated along back area, pockets were just the correct size and easy to manage. Bought this for traveling to San Francisco and knew it would need to carry jackets, DSLR Camera, reading glasses and more. It was fantastic. Worked great as a carry on for the plane, took on bicycle ride, Segway Ride and everywhere I when. Strongly recommend buy the North Face Recon Backpack.

I bought this backpack to carry my laptop and all other technology back and forth to work. Love the fact that it has 2 separate padded compartments for a laptop and tablet - great for an iPad and laptop! Both compartments have plenty of space for peripheral devices and chargers. The 2 side pockets are perfect for carrying enough water to get you through the day. The back area is great for tossing items that you need to secure and still easily reach with one arm - example - car keys! Incredibly comfortable when fully packed and the shoulder straps don't leave your fresh pressed button down full of creases! Seems like it would be perfect for a day hike in the mountains too . . . ah, one can dream! :)

Overall a good backpack. The material used is durable though I'm not sure how it would do in rainy weather. Lots of pockets of different sizes for your storage needs. Sturdy back for shoulder and back support. The only reason it did not get an extra star was because the laptop compartment was too small for my laptop. Unless you have a smaller than average portable PC you'll find your laptop asking for more space. Otherwise, I'd choose this pack as my everyday carry.

Comments about The North Face Recon Backpack:

Absolutely an amazing bag. I had a 22L bag that I'd been using for school. The problem with that bag was that it was too small, didn't have enough compartments, there weren't many pockets at all, and my stuff sat really weirdly in it. So when I decided to look for a bigger bag, I decided that it needed to be one that had everything the 22L was missing and that I could also use for backpacking and traveling. I found this bag and I fell in love with it. Not only does it have way more compartments and just the right amount of pockets, it also has the space that I was looking for and I don't really have an issue with the way my stuff sits in it. I take this bag almost everywhere with me. I take it to work, on weekend trips, if I'm going to a friends house, traveling. I use to carry so much extra stuff and now this is the only bag I really need and use(besides a super lightweight day bag I usually keep in the large compartment in the back or the mesh compartment on the front). My favorite feature on the bag is the front little zipper pocket. I use that pocket so much and it's great for easy access to essentials. My only complaint would be that the waist belt isn't very wide so it doesn't provide the support that I would've like to have from a waist belt. Other than that, this is the best backpack that I've ever had and I'm still just as in love with it as the day I got it.
