Our jewelry is handcrafted using 100% post-industrial and post-consumer gold and silver, offering an environmentally and socially-responsible choice for jewelry. It is estimated that approximately 20 tons of mining waste (often mercury and cyanide) are generated to produce enough gold for one ring! Wiser Jewelry also uses lab-created gems, which are chemically and physically identical to mined gems, but without permanent pit mine scars on the earth (some are so large they're visible from satellites) or the endangerment of miners' lives. Conflict-free diamonds can also be used in our wedding sets. Thanks for your interest in our earth-friendly jewelry! We welcome requests for custom orders. |
About Wiser Jewelry
It was twenty-five years before Steve Wiser realized his dream of becoming a professional jeweler. He grew up in the rolling hills of southeastern Washington State, crafting jewelry as a hobby. He finally gave up a career in purchasing to pursue his dream of making jewelry for a living. Although largely self-taught, in 2003 Steve obtained his Graduate Jeweler Certificate from the prestigious Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco. As one of his premier lines of jewelry, Steve blended his love of jewelry-making with his desire to tread lightly on the earth, and found it fitting to start with designs inspired by Pacific Northwest Native American artwork. He handcrafts all pieces from 100% post-industrial and post-consumer gold and silver (in a soon-to-be-solar-powered studio). He prefers to use lab-created diamonds and gems which are physically & chemically identical to the mined gems they replace (without the social & environmental impacts/waste), and pearls that are sustainably harvested or cultured. Wiser Jewelry uses cleaning and finishing solutions that are less caustic to people and the environment (for example, alum from the spice rack instead of nitric and sulfuric acids). More environmentally and socially-responsible jewelry pieces, including unique wedding bands, will be added to the website throughout 2008. Thank you for your interest in our earth-friendly jewelry!
