Overview

The two-seat Smart fortwo is available in three different models for 2008, Pure, Passion, and Passion Cabriolet. The Cabriolet model differs from the other two models in that it offers an electric soft top that can be adjusted to any position while driving. It includes a glass heated rear window, and the roof bars for the top can be removed and stowed in a special compartment in the tailgate.

All U.S.-bound smart models include a very economical 1.0L, 70-horsepower inline three-cylinder engine. A five-speed automated manual transmission is standard on all fortwos; it does not have a clutch pedal but rather includes a button that allows either manual gear selection-by tapping forward to go up a gear or back to go down a gear-or a fully automatic mode.

The powertrain is quite peppy in city driving, and is capable of Interstate-speed cruising as well, with a top speed of about 90 mph. Fuel economy is among the best of any vehicle, with EPA ratings of 33 city, 41 highway.

With the smart's extremely small size, safety is an important consideration. Four head and thorax air bags are standard across the model line, and the fortwo has an integrated tridion safety cell that's comparable to the roll cage on a racecar. The cell is visible within the car and comes in either silver or black. Body panels are made of a tough plastic material and can be replaced in less than an hour. What's more, electronic stability control-not usually found on small cars-is standard on the fortwo, along with anti-lock brakes and a hill-start assist feature that prevents it from rolling backward when starting on an uphill slope.

The Pure model comes very simply equipped, with a central remote locking system, manual steering, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and a "radio-ready console." The Passion adds considerably more commonly desired equipment, such as air conditioning, a panorama roof, alloy wheels, steering-wheel shift paddles, power windows, power heated side mirrors, and an AM/FM/CD sound system. The Passion Cabriolet also adds a premium sound system with an in-dash MP3 compatible CD changer.

A "comfort package" is optional on the Passion models and includes electric power steering, leather heated seats, rain and light sensors, and automatic headlamps.

Value

There's nothing else like the 2008 Smart fortwo available in the U.S. The Smart's design makes a strong style statement, and with an unbelievably short total length of 106 inches it will fit into small gaps in traffic and park with ease in even the tightest spots. Fuel economy is a definite selling point, too, especially for city-street commuters. The Cabriolet is now the lowest-priced convertible available in the United States. These 2-seaters just hit US soil and are models of comfort, safety and super fuel efficiency. With great German styling, a remarkable "exoskeleton" for superior safety and a 55 MPG engine, the Smart Car[[fold:]] is set to become the new, earth-friendly "Mini Cooper" -- and there's a topless model for those convertible lovers.

The 2008 Smart Car Fortwo is a tiny, fuel-sipping city car for those whose daily driving limits them to congested downtown streets. The Smart Car is truly innovative because it matches contemporary social trends for big cities, where many people's lifestyle means they don't need more than two seats, and they prefer something that's small, stylish, and fun. Metropolitan drivers will love this car for its nimble driving features, its fuel-saving capacity, and its knockout design. Now, you can be smart by turning our love of driving into your love of driving Smart. The Smart Car makes parallel parking obsolete - no more craning your neck to wedge your way into a parking spot that’s just too tight to fit your car into. [[media:161354|right|top|||]]Now you can simply park perpendicularly and walk away. The Smart Car is a powerful little burst of energy with exceptional maneuverability and a passion for hugging street curves. Engineered by Mercedes-Benz, the Smart ForTwo boasts impressive engineering and a zippy 71-hp engine. Completely redesigned to suit the tastes of discerning drivers, the new Smart Fortwo brings a standard of style and design to the subcompact market that’s head-and-shoulders above the rest. The Smart ForTwo is smaller than the Mini Cooper and is more fuel- efficient than the Cooper, the Honda Fit, and the Toyota Yaris. The Smart Fortwo has incorporated safety measures designed to save lives and cause fewer injuries. Though ultra-tiny, the Smart ForTwo provides space, luxury, and protective features found in high-end luxury cars. The car’s extra width gives it a pronounced façade, making it seem much larger, and bigger stock tires accentuate its presence, re-inventing it as the hottest Smart Fortwo to date. The Smart's headlights are larger than previous models. New H7 projection headlights give the Smart Fortwo a futuristic expression, but the Smart smile remains. Top-of-the-line Smart models come with only the best quality materials and accessories, offering comfort, elegance, and convenience. These include leather seats and trim as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Environmental Management System
Here is the stated smart Environmental Policy: "With our products, we are setting a milestone for environmentally-compatible individual mobility. Every day, we live an efficient and dynamic environmental management system that is aligned towards on-going improvement."

Now, we understand that those can just be words or that we can really live with the spirit of that commitment. We choose the spirit! And then we back up that intention with rigorous independent examination. Our environmental management system was certified to DIN EN ISO 14001 standards in February 1997 at our Böblingen facility. Annual internal and external audits ensure that this system is consistently applied.

Our environmental policies are not just for smart. We want our suppliers to be environmentally smart too. So the suppliers who have gathered in smartville work with us in an environmental protection workgroup to coordinate environmental efforts and set future strategies. We live together as a smart community honoring the environment and our natural resources.
