Overview

Ford's E-Series full-size van models, otherwise referred to with the name Econoline, can be equipped in a wide range of configurations for both cargo and passenger duty for 2008. Passenger versions come in two primary models-the standard-duty E-150, and the Super Duty E-350, which offers increased towing and hauling ability. The E-150 comes in a single length, while the E-350 comes in standard and extended versions. The extended version is about 20 inches longer.

A 225-horsepower, 4.6L V8 is standard on the E-150, but all Super Duty E-350s come with a standard 255-horsepower, 5.4L V8. The 5.4L is optional on the E-150; exclusive to the E-350 is the optional 6.0L Power Stroke turbo-diesel, which is best for towing and makes 235 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. Also standard on the E-350 is AdvanceTrac with roll stability control, an electronic stability aid aimed at preventing the loss of control that could lead to a rollover. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard on all passenger-duty Econolines.

XL models come with air conditioning, a basic AM/FM radio, tilt steering, and a seating arrangement with front bucket seats and two three-passenger bench seats in back. XLTs step up to a six-speaker CD sound system, dual captain's chairs in front, power windows, mirrors, and locks, plus cruise control. The E-350 extended models have several additional seating configurations that can accommodate up to 15 people.

The E-150 can tow up to 7,500 pounds and the E-350 can tow up to 10,000 pounds, when equipped with the optional Trailer Tow package. Notable options include a reverse-sensing system and auxiliary rear air conditioning.

Value

Ford's traditional full-size Econoline vans have long been overlooked in favor of minivans and large SUVs, but the line still stands as one of the best options for those who have to regularly tow or haul heavy loads, and it boasts a variety of interior configurations for 2008. Plus, the Super Duty E-350 costs less than many full-size SUVs with similar towing capability.

FlexFuel: An Inspired No-Cost Option

Our concern for the environment goes back a long way, and the Flexible Fuel F-150 has actually been around for years. But as E85 fuel is becoming more plentiful, the F-150 FFV is now a no-cost option. Cleaner burning, it's easier on the air we breathe.
