Macy's first department store opened in 1858 in New York City. The famous red star was inspired by the tattoo on R.H. Macy's arm in tribute the star that guided him when lost at sea. Some of Macy's milestones include the first in-store Santa Claus, the first woman retail executive, and the well known Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
