The ABS Vario Base Unit offers you the added protection of an avalanche airbag in the backcountry along with the versatility to choose what size pack you need. Instead of having multiple ABS packs for different length trips, the Vario Base Unit lets you switch between different sized external packs (sold separately), so you can spend money on more important things than duplicate airbag system, like avalanche classes. The ABS airbag system employs dual airbags to increase your surface area and keep you higher up in the debris field in the event of an avalanche. This precision German engineered pack features pneumatic activation and meets the TÜV requirements for the extreme forces experienced during an avalanche. The most important avalanche prevention tool will always be your brain, but we all know it fails sometimes. If worst comes to worst, having the added protection of the ABS airbag system could make all the difference. BASE UNIT COMES FILLED.
ABS TwinBag System – In the event of an avalanche, deployment of an airbag system helps the victim stay higher up in the debris, so they are more likely to come to rest on the surface than buried deep down. ABS's TwinBag system deploys two independent airbags on either side of the bag, providing 170 L for increased surface area and insurance against system failure.
ABS Carrying System – Shoulder strap, hip strap, chest strap, and leg strap all meet the TÜV (German Technical Control Board) requirements for extreme operational guidelines.
Interchangeable Packs – The Vario Base Unit ships with a zip on cover that can accommodate the airbag system, a shovel and a probe. This cover can be replaced with four other packs that accommodate larger loads (sold separately).
Height adjustable chest strap
Integrated leg strap
Every base unit comes with a cover so a shovel and probe can be easily accomodated.
Warning – Wearing an airbag backpack is no guarantee of survival in an avalanche. Backcountry travelers are highly advised to educate themselves in snow stability assessment, route finding, and companion rescue and carry all of the conventional avalanche gear in addition to the airbag.
Used Cartridges – Spent cartridges may only be refilled by ABS®; after deployment you should return the empty cartridge to an authorized dealer or ABS® where you will receive a credit toward the purchase of a full cartridge. Activation handles should be replaced at the same time.
