The ABS® Vario Large Base Unit is the best solution for the snow sport enthusiast who frequents slide prone areas and wants the flexibility of being able to move the airbag "guts" between various size packs. The base unit consists of the integrated ABS® TwinBag system, which can then be connected to any zip-on bag with a volume between 8 and 55 L, making the Vario incredibly versatile. Note that in ABS® terminology, "Airbag Inside" or "ABS® Inside" indicates a fixed airbag system that cannot be moved; this Large Base Unit is compatible only with the growing number of Vario packs made by ABS® and other manufacturers.

Comments about ABS Vario Base Unit - Large:
I work in Haines, AK, as an apprentice heli-guide and I trust this ABS system with my life. It is light, practical/functional, and the how the floats are deployed (and where they are inflated) has shown to give you the best possibility of surviving an avalanche. The Vario base unit pairs well with the Dakine 40L bag attachment, and there are enough tie downs to easily and securely fit the pack to your body with little to no sway. A great feature is the leg loop that secures you to the pack so during an avalanche the immense forces from the snow don't separate you from your floats. Though the system uses a nitrogen canister (instead of O2), the time between activation to inflation is within seconds and remains completely inflated and robust enough to stand up to avalanches. I recommend getting two canisters due to the difficulty of finding dealers that fill bottles with nitrogen.
